Tonight: Anamon

13 years ago Buffalo was transformed forever when it got nailed with an October Storm it had never seen before: there was snow, thunder, and lightning, and huge, wet snowflakes brought down powerlines and hundreds (thousands?) of trees all over the fabled “City of Trees.” It was traumatic (and kind of fun), and young local indie heroes Halo Nellie are commemorating the whole thing tonight at Nietzsche’s with a killer indie show featuring Anamon, Circular Logic and Passed Out. Headlining visitors Anamon are a heartbreaking swell indie new wave outfit from Rochester with a sweetly dark sound that encompasses lo-fi, roadhouse blues, classic French pop, and new wave, with local thrashers Circular Logic,  emo punks Passed Out and gracious hosts and curators Halo Nello getting everything started. Doors are at 9pm and cover is $5. Purple, Green, and Yellow by Anamon

Tonight: The Vaughns

There’s a growing consensus that the future of rock music is female, and that future happens tonight at the Mohawk when New Jersey garage indie rockers The Vaughns roll through town with a stop at The Mohawk with Clever Girls plus Velvet Bethany and Halo Nellie. Hailing from Springfield, NJ, The Vaughns bring together grunge, blues, surf punk, and stadium rock with an insurgent folk energy from lead vocalist and guitarist Anna Lies that’s both timeless and intrinsically now as showcased on their intimate yet epic recent debut LP F.O.M.O. , an album that makes a case for the continued relevance of rock music in 2019 that the new Black Keys album couldn’t even begin to. Joining them will be reverb drenched, shoegazey Burlington Vermont indie rockers  Clever Girls, with local support from Buffalo punks Velvet Bethany and up and coming future post punks Halo Nellie. Cover is $7, doors are at 7pm and[...]

Halo Nellie Debuts Second Single “Sick on the Floor”

Indie-rockers Halo Nellie have just released their new single “Sick on the Floor,” following up last month’s release of “Cold Room.” With a driving beat, the band creates an energetic texture that does an excellent job of showcasing the vocals. With the perfect amount of jangle and fuzz, it’s a very fun listen and a worthy addition to your Summer playlist. Hopefully this is leading up to the release of a full length, and that will definitely be worth checking out. Catch them at their next show on July 18th at Mohawk Place alongside The Vaughns, Clever Girls, and Velvet Bethany. Sick on the Floor by Halo NellieWritten by John Smigielski

Tonight: North by North

The unicorn of rock ‘n roll bands happens to be the two piece line-up. Stripped down, this combo of guitar and drums delivers more punch than a full piece orchestra.Take for example, The Flat Duo Jets influencing the White Stripes who gave credence to the Black Keys. Following suit, from the city of Chicago, I’d like to introduce to you North by North. Self described crunch rockers playing sweaty fever dream rock ‘n roll, North by North use their experience of over 650 shows to their advantage. They unleash boogie-woogie grooves from drummer Kendra Blank and psych-surf riffs from guitarist Nate Girard to create a rich and colorful atmosphere that reminds one of The Stooges mixed with Sonic Youth. They will be in town tonight in support of their latest album Last Days of Magic. Also on deck tonight are garage act The Gennies, buzzing newcomers Halo Nellie, and raw rock act[...]

Tonight: Johnny & the Man Kids

Tonight Mohawk hosts a solid lineup of Buffalo indie rock when Johnny & The Man Kids celebrate the release of their new EP You Made Me Hurt with help from Passed Out, Award Show and Halo Nellie. People expecting some 90’s revivalism will have to look elsewhere  because Johnny & the Man Kids have entirely skipped that apparently misbegotten decade to embrace the glory of the first decade of the 21st century as embodied by NYC stalwarts The Strokes and Vampire Weekend with some of that early Killers goodness (before it all went wrong) via John Marciniak’s earnest and appealingly evocative vocals, and their EP is a celebration of youth and an era that almost seems bygone nowadays considering everything’s all went wrong, but hey. Opening the show will be raw as hell indie rockers Passed Out, lo-fi shoegazers Award Show, and newbies halo nellie, about which little is known so[...]

Tonight: Forager

Surf’s up at Milkie’s tonight with featured band Forager! Described as a “surfgaze” group, Forager originated in 2016 Cleveland, Ohio with mainstays Raye Hart, James Thain, and Justin Bellino. The group has gained notoriety among college radios and indie bloggers following their first EP release this past February. Deadbeat Suite is a classic vivacious “feel-good” album with one catchy track after another. The driving hooks and bouncing rhythms instills the urge to get up and dance like Uma Thurman and John Travolta in cult classic “Pulp Fiction.” The major tones throughout the album bring a sense of serenity and blissfulness. There’s nostalgia for a time and music genre that seems to have fallen by the wayside over a number of decades. It’s time for a revival with bands like Forager. Tonight’s lineup includes local rock groups Nylon Otters and Halo Nellie. Doors open at 8pm with a $5 cover charge.[...]
