Governess – (Let Me Be Your) Governess

Have you ever partied so hard that you blacked out? If so, think of that last thing you remembered happening when you woke up the next day. Whatever that may be is what Governess sounds like. The bands’ debut album, (Let Me Be Your) Governess is a foul blast of fresh air to purify your poisoned hearts, and gleefully torch your saccharine souls. The concept of “rock n’ roll” has been twisted into so many different forms over the years but at the root of all the best kinds is attitude, energy, and some sort of lust, which this album is soaked in. Tonight: Halloween Tribute Party

Cover shows are hands down my favorite Halloween tradition. When else can you see all your favorite classic punk bands on the same stage? One year, I got to see Slayer, SSD, the Misfits, and the Ramones together on the same stage and Lifetime, the Lawrence Arms, NOFX, and Descendents in the same weekend. This Halloween at Mohawk Place, you can see the Naturalists as Pavement, Wolf as the Replacements, members of Orations, A House Safe for Tigers and TMMC as Joy Division, and a Governess’ rendition of Turbonegro. The Halloween tribute is $5 if you wear a costume because why wouldn’t you. The punk imposters go on at 8pm. CC Death Squad will play creepily in between sets. Don’t miss your probably only chance to see Pavement and the Replacements.

Tonight: The Battery Electric

Saturday nights are for rock’n’roll takeovers, and what better way to celebrate than to spend it at the Polish Library; the East Side’s coolest haunt (612 Fillmore Ave). New Jersey outcasts, the Battery Electric and Hot Blood, deemed fit to grace our little town with the sweatiest, nastiest, r’n’r their bodies could muster. Full-scale heathen-on-fire, Turbo-worshipping, punk rock. Wondering why the highly hyped Jersey-boys have developed such a serious rep? Gotta get to the east side to find out. The bill also features a tour-de-force of Buffalo’s best. Johnny Thunders-rip off duo, Raunchy Sex, will be making their semi-annual reunion. The boys in Rotten have been called a lot of things but nice isn’t one of em. Glue splattered, filth-punk with some anarchistic flare, England’s favorite sons have been laying down a path of slime-strewn indecency since their inception. Whether live or recorded on wax these boys deliver the goods and do so in spades, inspiring sweet, sick madness. BUT BEWARE. They will ruin anything they touch and consume anything they can get their filthy hands on. They’re just a wee bit off-kilter. It makes sense then that their new EP is titled Bat Shit Crazy.
