Tonight: Science Man LP Release Show

Come out and get weird tonight at Buffalo’s Electric Avenue as the mysterious lo-fi hard rocker, Science Man, celebrates the release of his debut self-titled LP and the first stop on his new tour. Born out of a science experiment gone horribly wrong, or horribly right, Science Man (John Toohill) is a self-described “monstrosity of rock and roll.” His stellar new album is made up of 11 tracks of gnarly and grimy garage rock that will melt your face faster than a Bunsen burner. With heavier-than-lead grooves, Science Man will stand on your neck and sing over you with dynamic and charismatic vocals. This is going to be a surefire combustible and volatile set, so save yourself the regret and witness Science Man before he blasts off. Getting in on the fun is the doomy Buffalo trio, Malarchuk. These guys bring crushing riffs directly from Valhalla that reek of such[...]

Tonight: Belle-Skinner

Tonight, Electric Avenue is changing things up a little bit with an evening of new folk music featuring Brooklyn’s Belle-Skinner and local folk rockers Leyda. Lilting, delicate and pleasingly esoteric, Belle-Skinner aka Maria Brosgol has a voice and guitar tone that is absolutely timeless, plus shes’s opened for the sublime Mitski, and at this point in time that’s all you really need to know. Opening the show will be baroque indie folk quintet Leyda, who’s bold and effecting Hallways EP came out earlier this year. Doors at 9pm and cover is $5. The Covers by Belle-Skinner

Tonight: Dentist

Fuzzy, buzzing indie pop act Dentist will be visiting Buffalo tonight. Their unique, surf-punk-tinged, indie-pop aesthetic is driven by the ethereal vocals of singer Emily Bornemann, coupled with smart drums and California-esque guitar crunch. Having recently been named by SXSW as one of “2018’s top 10 bands,” they’ve just released their third LP, Night Swimming, earlier this year. Joining them are the poppy punky goodness of Chicago act Jupiter Styles and New Orleans act Treadles, and Buffalo’s very own honey COMA. Tonight’s show is at 9pm at Electric Avenue. Bring $5 for admission. Night Swimming by Dentist

Tonight: The Curls

Squeeze the last drop out of your weekend with a show hosted at Electric Avenue in Buffalo tonight. Topping the bill and fresh off last month’s Pitchfork Festival are Windy City art-rockers, The Curls. This amorphous musical ensemble experiments with psychedelic bubblegum melodies and some of the quirkiest sounds you’ll ever hear. The tie-dye outcomes are all-out fun and catchy listens that will swirl inside your head for days. Come check out their amazing live performance which was has been compared to St. Vincent, Frank Zappa and the almighty Talking Heads. Need anymore convincing than that? Sharing, if not hogging, the stage are the Buffalo trio, SMUG. These guys have a bad attitude and play sniveling and awesome pop punk party anthems that will make you want to get piss-drunk and relieve yourself on a neighbor’s front lawn while flipping the world the bird. With infectiously nihilistic and in-your-face vocals[...]

Tonight: Zigtebra

Electric Avenue hosts an eclectic night tonight which will be the music destination for downtown Buffalo. Topping the bill, and making a stop on their exhaustive US tour, is the dancey Chicago synthpop duo, Zigtebra. Creative partners Emily Rose and Joe Zeph will get your body moving with their quirky, diary-entry love songs overcast with sparkling melancholia. Everything may seem like rainbows and butterflies with bubbly synth beats and Rose’s warm, romantic vocals, but below the surface, there’s longing and heartache. It’s what makes Zigtebra so authentic and appealing. If you like dancing and have a heart, you won’t want to miss these two. Sharing the spotlight will be Buffalo’s freshest alternative folk act, Heave. Song writer Emily Finlan’s gorgeous and moody voice entwines with awesomely atmospheric instruments to create superb alt-ballads your ears need to ear. Give them one song and you’ll feel like you’re floating down a lazy river[...]

Tonight: BAMBARA

Electric Avenue is hosting an eclectic, heady, and dark lineup of noise rock tonight headlined by Athens GA by way of Brooklyn death rockers BAMBARA that could be exactly what you need. Droning, rootsy like a deranged preacher, and vaguely scary in an apocalyptic sort of way, BAMBARA is a bleak storm that shreds on a variety of levels good for the soul if you’re into that sort of thing, which we are. Opening the show will be local doom and gloom punks Alpha Hopper, punk country nihilists Be Locus Or Alone, and new wave newbies Cyber Bullies, playing just their second show. Doors open at 9pm and cover is $7.

Tonight: Yazan

Modern-day Frank Zappa, Yazan, takes his talents to Buffalo favorite, Electric Avenue, tonight for the latest stop on his very first kick-ass, cross-country tour. Hailing from Brooklyn, NY, Yazan is a singer-songwriter-guitarist who specializes in an exceptional mixture of blues, folk and psychedelic grooves. Riding high off the release of his new album, Hahaha, he’ll be flanked by drummer, Nick Dooley (Flagland), and bassist, Sam Gehrke (Soul Low), to give your Friday night an auditory kick in the pants. Also taking the stage is Jack, the solo songwriting project of former Brooklynite-turned-Buffalonian and singer-songwriter, Brittany Costa.  Rounding out the night are Buffalo’s slowcore three-piece, Award Show, and the folksy Andrew Kothen (Dreambeaches). Show at 8pm with a $5 cover. Hahaha by Yazan

Tonight: Hallowed Bells

Tonight at the Electric Avenue, Hallowed Bells will be gracing the crowd with lush, twinkling, synthesizer melodies, organ raptures, and steady rhythms. The two-piece Philadelphia outfit creates the kind of otherworldly music that calls to mind the sky, sentient beings from another planet, pastoral epiphanies among other things.  According to their website, much of the music was recorded this January and February, combining “dense chromatic harmonies and intricate arrangements with moments of luminous simplicity and lyrical melodies.” They will be fittingly accompanied with notable Buffalo musicians in the city’s electronic scene:  Sparklebomb, Kristachuwan, and Eppo. The first of whom arranges moon-landing chord progressions with elegiac rhythms along with static-y radio and tape recordings, while Kristachuwan accompanies live sax with thumping, kaleidoscopic dream scapes. Last but not least, Eppo manipulates eastern samples, matching them with pronounced, swinging beats, producing hazy yet melodic tracks with a hip-hop flair. The ethereal electronic affair begins[...]
