Tonight: City of Night

The Emerging Leaders in the Arts Buffalo hosts it’s fourth annual City of Night, the multi-disciplinary arts and culture happening/shindig that’s frankly emerged as one of the absolute best nights in Buffalo, this evening. This year’s installment is shifting from Silo City to Buffalo’s Old First Ward along Republic Street between Louisiana and Sidway streets as part of a three year commitment to that venerable yet evolving community, and while there’s been some murmurings against this change of venue, assurances have been given that this year’s installment will be as grand and magnificent as in year’s previous, including more art and music, and an Art Train consisting of a series of art installations housed in shipping containers (something for fans of Lethal Weapon 2, myself included). The DJ tent located at Kenturcky Street will be featuring sets from 6:00pm to midnight from Soma, Pinja, Cove, and PROJEX while the amphitheater[...]

Deep Thinka Records

Buffalo-based independent hip-hop label Deep Thinka Records has been a leading local institution since 1997 for discovering forward-thinking, inspiring MC’s dedicated to furthering the eclectic, socially conscious tradition of the genre. The label’s current roster boasts some of the city’s finest rap talent with artists like Mad Dukez, Billy Drease Williams, Chuckie Campbell, and Tanya Morgan each bringing a unique vision to the Deep Thinka camp. Tonight, Duke’s on Allen will host a hip-hop showcase for Herd Fest curated by the Deep Thinka crew, who have brought together the most exciting local rap talent, including members of prolific collectives EVC and Koolie High. Rapper Toneyboi of Koolie High, whose video for his latest single “Guacaroni & Cheese” was featured here at buffaBLOG earlier this week, will host tonight’s event. The MC is set to release his latest album, Leaders of the New Kool this summer featuring abstract production and the artist’s signature gritty,[...]

My Rap Name is Alex Unites with Cove, Hooizzy for New Track

Buffalo rappers My Rap Name is Alex and Hooizzy have dropped an anthem about making it through the inevitable struggle of being broke, young and independent. Titled “Broke as F&%K!,” the song conveys a sentiment that I think we’ve all felt one time or another. Alex’s imagery is great, if not too real when he drops lines like “I been saving the boxes from the cereal I eat, and usin’ em to build a wall to hold in the heat.” Hooizzy and Alex’s chemistry really makes the track as the two energetically exchange short verses and couplets. The music for the track is provided by the infallible Cove of EVC, who’s crafted a masterful beat that evolves and devolves throughout. “Broke as F&%K!” appears on Alex’s new mixtape Collage Radio alongside 19 more quality tracks. Alex is also appearing at PorchFest at 5:00 tonight on 147 Bryant St. Peep the track below.

Tonight: Heavy Rotation – Lonely Hearts Dance

Later on tonight, we will be taking over Allentown’s go-to movin’ and shakin’ venue, Hardware, in order to deliver you some of the best DJ’s Buffalo has to offer.  On the line-up is hiphop guru Cove, drum and bass sensation Camaican Sensation, multi-media artist Projex, and dance party expert DJ Teen Wolf. With just a $5 cover, this is the spot to be in Allentown. Cove will be starting things off at 11pm sharp, so make sure your “one more drink and we’ll leave” is around 10:15pm.

Tonight: The Public Presents

Kind of a slow night in Buffalo for music (unless you can still tolerate jam), so if you want to get your fix in, The Public will be throwing its first monthly showcase at Nietzsche’s to go along with the paper’s re-occurring Public School dance showcases across the street at Hardware. Headlining the evening, which is coined as “The Public Presents…,” will be buzzing Buffalo synth-pop act, Humble Braggers, fronted by Tom Burtless. The group dropped a couple solid EPs over the course of 2014, one that included a stellar cover of Drake’s “Hold On, We’re Going Home” (listen below), so keep a look out for them tonight. Rounding out the eclectic bill will be local MC Mic Excel, electronic artist JeffRepeater, and Essential Vitamins Crew ring leader, Cove. Music kicks off this evening at 10pm with a cover of $5. Just Announced: Heavy Rotation – Lonely Hearts Dance

We must admit, we love a good dance party. Luckily the fine folks over at Hardware are giving us the opportunity to throw our own next month. On Friday, February 13th, buffaBLOG will be curating the front and back room of the Allentown bar supplying Buffalo with all the hits and hot jams your after 40 hour work week has been craving. The lineup consists of local hip-hop producer, Cove, mashup extraordinaire Teenwolf, electronic visual artist, Projex, and front room regular, Camaican Sensation. All in all, this is a great opportunity to show off all those dance moves you’ve been practicing while snowed in this winter. Get there around 10pm and the doors are $5. EVC’s Cove Releases New Track

Multifaceted producer Cove is always reliable for dope new material. His latest track, “It’s the jawn!!!,” is a high energy instrumental that keeps the head rocking. Stuttering organ synths and a distant voice encourage you to “Come on!” throughout the length of the song. Bringing forth feelings of inspiration and drive, it’s the most recent instrumental track of Cove’s to evoke emotion. A member of the ever-talented Essential Vitamins Crew, Cove is behind several standout tracks, and crafted the wonderfully moving album love.gained/love.lost.too., one of my favorite projects of the last year. “It’s the jawn!!!” is another notch in the talented belt of Cove, an artist that breeds consistency and intuition.

Tonight: Beautiful/Decay

As visual art has always been an important component of live music performance, the creative possibilities of curating a collaborative, mutually informed showcase can often allow the unique tastes of the artists  to come together to realize a singular aesthetic statement. Hip hop and street culture has long been at the forefront of this avenue of performance, merging the ideas of local artists, filmmakers, DJs, MCs, and producers into a cohesive community event. Tonight, Allen Street Hardware will host “Beautiful/Decay,” presented by art collective ArmCandy. This interactive live event features the latest collection from visual artist Jessica Saddleson, as well as a release party for love.lost/love.gained.too, the newest instrumental tape from Essential Vitamins Crew-affiliated producer Cove. In addition, the event will include DJ sets from Josh Yourmoms and John Pal, along with a poetry reading from EVC artist Jay MF G. Professional photographer JK Media will also be on hand to shoot[...]
