Tonight: New Swears

Head down to Mohawk Place tonight to make your Tuesday night a fun one, as New Swears will be rolling down all the way from Ottawa to grace us with their presence. The boisterous four piece will have the crowd moving with their infections blend of power pop and garage rock. Their new LP that came out in June,  And The Magic Of Horses, is a blast from front to back.  Opening up the show will be two local acts, The Gennies and Super-Tugger. Doors are set to open for the show at 8pm, and there is an $8 cover at the door.  This is one you won’t want to miss.

Tonight: Prince vs. Bowie Dance Party

Tonight, Buffalo Infringement Fest 2017 honors two of the heroes we lost last year with an epic Prince vs. Bowie dance party at the Mohawk to raise money for beloved and embattled art space Dreamland. DJs Xotec and Bill Page will be kicking the most danceable jams from the Prince Rogers Nelson (1958-2016) and David Bowie (1947-2016) oeuvres, along with some secret performances in between sets throughout the night. The dance party will be dedicated to Buffalo artist and Infringement Fest supporter Jenny “Lovely” Keys, who passed away last month; and proceeds go to the still closed Dreamland, which was regrettably caught up in the bureaucratic justice this spring. Infringement, Dreamland, Bowie, Prince… they are all about expression, and about getting free. Tonight, get free for a worthy cause. Cover is $5 and doors open at 8pm.

Tonight: Phantogram

Blazing supernova hot NYC electronic pop duo Phantogram makes their local debut tonight at the Town Ballroom with enigmatic electro chanteuse Skott. Phantogram, aka the duo of Sarah Barthel and Josh Carter, have been cranking cinematic, nocturnal soundtracks across three full length albums as well as guesting on various Flaming Lips projects,  their ongoing collaboration with Big Boi under the moniker Big Grams, and a show is really one of the more anticipated shows of our above average summer concert season. Opening the show will be the frankly mysterious Skott; she’s signed to RCA/Victor and her synth pop sound is bewitching, but beyond that she’s keeping a tight lid on the details, which is also nice, and refreshing. Tickets are still available for $27 and doors open at 7pm.

Tonight: Tegan and Sara

Tegan and Sara are undeniably one of the most important modern indie pop bands. Their influence spans multiple genres and have effected innumerable bands, and you’ve got a chance to see them live tonight at the Town Ballroom.  While they are technically still on tour in support of their latest album, Love You To Death, the duo is gearing up for a string of shows celebrating the ten year anniversary of the legendary record, The Con, so I’m sure you’ll be hearing multiple tracks off of that record, as well as many tracks spanning their entire catalog. Opening the show will be the incredible Japanese Breakfast, and if you caught their recent show at Mohawk Place, you know their set is not to be missed. Their new LP, Soft Sounds From Another Planet, just came out on Dead Oceans, and it is killer from front to back. Doors open at the[...]

Tonight: Son Of The Sun

Beloved but dearly departed Buffalo band Son Of The Sun is getting back together for one night only tonight at Buffalo Iron Works, and they’re bringing their musical progeny with them to open the show. Zak Ward’s new band First Ward will be joined by The Soft Love featuring Jeremy Franklin and Joe Stocker and Brandon Delmont’s  A House Safe For Tigers project with Mark Constantino will be convening to show us some of the future of the local music scene before getting back together onstage to remind us of what Son Of The Sun was all about. Tickets are $10 at the door and doors are at 8pm. Almost Not There by Son of the Sun

Tonight: Julie Byrne

Fans of ambient art folk are in for a treat tonight. In a special event at unorthodox venue Silo City, singer-songwriter Julie Byrne makes her return to Buffalo. Joining her are natives Lara Buckley and Noah Falck. Julie Byrne, who was born and raised in Buffalo, is touring in support of her acclaimed sophomore album Not Even Happiness. Byrne’s compositions here are earthy and intimate, making use of intricate guitar fingerpicking with occasional light string accompaniment or samples. Her cross-country travels are inherent in these songs, and especially evident in her picturesque and poetic lyricism. Local artist Lara Buckley is known for her bombastic and spiritual sound collages, combining layers of vocals, synthetic instrumentation and natural field recordings. Noah Falck is the education director at Just Buffalo Literary Center, and he’ll be reading some of his own opaque-yet-poignant style poetry. The show begins at 8pm at Silo City. Tickets are[...]

Tonight: The New Pornographers

Well, I think it’s safe to say that tonight is one of the busiest nights for shows of the summer.  One option to make your Tuesday a special one is a rare appearance from Canadian indie vets, The New Pornographers.   On tour for their new album that dropped earlier this year, titled Whiteout Conditions, the legacy act is rolling through Buffalo with a stellar opener as well.  While you should expect to hear some cuts off of the new album, you’re sure to hear a good amount from their extensive, hit filled back catalog as well. The thing that makes this lineup so stacked is the touring opener for the show, Cloud Nothings.  While they have played in Buffalo a few times over the past couple years, the noisy indie outfit still brings the heat every show.  Doors open for the show at 7pm, and tickets are available at[...]

Tonight: Garbage

Tonight alternative rock legends from two different decades collide beautifully when resurgent New Wave heroes Blondie and post grunge icons Garbage play Artpark with Deap Vally. Something of a 90’s supergroup at the time made up by mega producer Butch Vig,  Duke Erikson, Steve Marker and front woman extraordinaire Shirley Manson, Garbage burned hot from the mid 90’s and early aughts with a refreshingly danceable electronic noise rock sound and classics like Garbage, Garbage 2.0 and Beautiful Garbage before taking an indefinite hiatus and returning last year with their self released Strange Little Birds and co-headlining shows this summer with Blondie. Los Angeles technicolor garage rock duo Deap Vally open show the show, which gets going at 6:30pm (doors open at 4:45pm). General admission tickets are still available for $17.

Tonight: Foxygen

At long last, glam psych rockers Foxygen will be making their Buffalo debut tonight at the Tralf..  The pointedly Los Angeles based duo of Sam France and Jonathan Rado have spent the last decade taking a nihilistic sledgehammer to 70’s psychedelic rock and AM Gold radio on albums like We Are The 21st Century Ambassadors Of Peace & Magic, … And Star Power, and most recently on Hang, a theatrical and phantasmagoric orchestral rock opus that’s pushes everything to the edge of sanity and frankly, beyond. Getting it going and transitioning your headspace will be Brooklyn lo-fi rock act Cut Worms and local provocateur/shaman, and Brimstone Blondes frontman Matthew Danger Lippman. Doors open at 7pm, show starts at 8pm, and tickets are still available at the door for $20.

Tonight: Out of Body

What better way of spending a Friday night than by thrashing around for a few hours. Tonight at Deep Space 8 is set to be a heavy rager that’s sure to get you going. Coming from Austin, TX will be Out of Body, who are just coming off the release of their latest LP, Voiceless. Out of Body mixes the sounds of alternative rock and mid-90s post hardcore with a lot of solid riffs and guitar work. Playing alongside them will be Riot Stares from Charleston, SC who bring something of a revitalized old school hardcore sound, and locals Onpoint  and Social Divorce. Those into Buffalo hardcore aren’t going to want to miss this. 7pm doors, music starts at 8 p.m. $5 for the touring bands. Voiceless by Out of Body

Tonight: Jeffrey Lewis & Los Bolts

Tonight, NYC folk punk outfit Jeffrey Lewis & Los Bolts headline a top lineup over at Sugar City with Multibird, Jack Toft and Little Cake. Taking a garage/punk rock sledgehammer to austere folk music tropes, Jeffrey Lewis finds new epic territory to mine live, while Multibird, a new act from Rochester’s Seth Faergolzia takes apart the folk music form from the inside. Ana (Radarada) Vafai’s band Little Cake and local hip hop hero Jack Toft. Cover is $10, doors open at 7pm and the show starts at 7:30pm to beat the 10pm curfew.

Tonight: Cayetana

Cayetana is one of the buzziest bands in the blogosphere right now and we’re lucky enough to host them tonight in our fair Queen City. The Philadelphia-based trio embodies the IDGAF spirit of punk, capturing a moment in time with their healthy mix of folk, indie, and punk elements. Baltimore’s lilting bedroom-pop mastermind Snail Mail is also on the bill, making for an excellent evening of strong lyrical sentiment and good vibes. Tonight’s show an 18+ shindig at Mohawk Place. Doors are at 7pm, music starts at 8pm. Bring $12 if you want to buy tickets at the door. New Kind of Normal by Cayetana

Tonight: Hank & Cupcakes

Tonight Nietzsche’s will be jumping thanks to an incredible slate featuring the thunderous dance punk of Hank & Cupcakes and some of Buffalo’s most forward looking acts. Hailing from Brooklyn, Hank & Cupcakes, aka Sagit Shir and Ariel Scherbacovsky, rock an evolving, mighty sound that currently skews more punk than dance on their third full length release Cheap Thrill, while still keeping those danceable beats coming. Opening the show will be R&B crooner from the future Saint Opal, grunge rock heroes SMUG, and charming vintage alternative rock revivalists Hundred Plus Club. Doors open at 9pm and cover is $6.

Hypoluxo - Sewing Souls

Tonight: Hypoluxo

It’s summer. It’s hot. It’s humid and you’re jonesing to get out and do something. Brooklyn act Hypoluxo will be playing at Sewing Souls to help you get that energy out. Having dropped their LP, If Language back in September, the four piece is back with a tight collection of songs in the form of their new EP, Taste Buds, releasing this August. The band came together and started making music while in Brooklyn, but it’s where each of the band members are from that’s really had an impact on their sound. Hailing from parts of Florida and LA, Hypoluxo’s sound has a laid back attitude and echoes Beat Happening a bit. Playing alongside Hypoluxo will be psych rockers, Deadwolf who are coming off their crazy show on Sunday, noise pop act, Suburbs, and locals, Planet Three. Doors are at 7pm. $5 at the door for the touring band. Taste Buds by Hypoluxo

Tonight: Big Thief

Fresh off of the release of their new LP, Capacity, Big Thief will be making their Buffalo debut tonight. The LP, out on Saddle Creek Records (Conor Oberst, Bright Eyes, Hop Along, Cursive, many many more) has been receiving raving reviews from  many major music publications, including Pitchfork, which gave the record their Best New Music rating. I can’t think of a better venue to house the Brooklyn four piece’s Buffalo arrival, as the Tralf Music Hall almost feels like it was made to house the band’s delicate, haunting sound. Doors are set to open at the Tralf at 7pm, and while there are no locals on the show, folk influenced Brooklyn act, Twain, will be kicking things off at 8pm. Tickets are only $12 at the door.
