Tonight: North by North

Tonight the Chicago-based duo North by North will take the stage at The 9th Ward, the bar located in the basement of the multi-use facility Babeville at 341 Delaware Ave. North by North’s brand of hard-hitting, riff-oriented rock will be the go-to rock show in town this evening. Also on the bill are buzzing up-and-coming local act, Witty Tarbox, indie rockers The Rifts, and perhaps the busiest grunge revivalist act in Buffalo, Nylon Otters. The show will start at 8pm with an $8 cover. Tonight: Bethlehem Steel

Brooklyn by way of Buffalo garage rockers Bethlehem Steel are hitting up their old area on their way back home from Texas after SXSW tonight at Birdhaus with Gun Candy and Slowcooker. The gritty riffs and emotional heft you know and love from Bethlehem Steel, you know… “one of our own,” will be in full effect, so you’re probably going to want to hit this show. Opening the show will be punk troublemakers Gun Candy and gnarly surf punks Slowcooker. Doors open at 7pm and cover is $5-$10. Party Naked Forever by Bethlehem Steel

Tonight: Can’t Swim

New Jersey quintet Can’t Swim is making a stop in Buffalo tonight, with strong support from lots of other great bands. Their tasteful blend of pop-punk and post-hardcore will close out the evening, while the dreamy and shoegazy emo-punk of Super Whatevr and Gleemer warm up the crowd. Local mainstays Fernway and Into the Wake will also be playing tonight. Tonight’s show is at Mohawk Place. Snag a ticket from a band for $12, or buy one at the door for $14. Doors are at 6pm.

Tonight: Casey Abrams

Double bass wunderkind, vocalist and pride of Idyllwood, California’s Casey Abrams rolls through the Ninth Ward tonight to lay down some non St. Patrick’s Day grooves with local soul man Vin DeRosa. The 2012 American Idol contestant is on tour behind his recently released sophomore full length Put A Spell, recorded Arcade Fire style in an old abandoned church in Brooklyn for holy vibes to go with Abrams’ well crafted and very earnest roots rock. Buffalo soul classicist Vin DeRosa gets the show going at 8pm, and tickets are $17 at the door, which opens at 7pm.

Tonight: Aircraft

Tonight Aircraft, First Ward and Velvet Bethany will join together to put on what is sure to be a show for the ages at The 9th Ward, the basement bar attached to the multi-use facility Babeville. This venue lies in the center of the theater district in Buffalo, at 341 Delaware Ave. Aircraft will be prepared to unveil their top-level energy as well as a masterful mix of both power and delicacy. Fellow Buffalonians First Ward will bring along their meticulous and anthemic melodies. Added onto that will be the garage rock vigor of Velvet Bethany, another locally based act. Tonight: Screaming Females

Buffalo is ablaze with excitement this evening for Weird Al Yankovic’s sold-out show at UB’s Center for the Arts, St. Bonaventure’s March Madness tournament chance, and rising punk act Screaming Females’ performance at Mohawk Place. Fronted by lead shredder/singer Marissa Paternoster’s distinct style of howl singing, the rising New Brunswick-based band has been a regular go-to on the indie scene, known for their raucous and commanding sets. Screaming Females are currently on tour of support of their latest album All at Once, which came out last month via Don Giovanni records. Also on the bill are power pop act Radiator Hospital and local punks Tina Panic Noise. Doors are at 8pm with a $17 cover. Bring earplugs.

Tonight: Joe Pug

Acclaimed singer-songwriter Joe Pug makes a stop in Buffalo tonight. Hitting the 9th Ward @ Babeville, the folk crooner is still touring off the strength of his 2015 release, Windfall. Pug’s journey has taken him across the country, from Maryland to North Carolina to Chicago to Nashville, and now Austin. His music reflects the nomadic amble of a restless traveler, and conjures Walt Whitman in his literary-like prose. Buffalo native solo singer songwriter Eric Ruhlmann will be opening the show. Doors are at 6:30pm, with a start time of 7:30pm. Tickets are $17 day of the show.

Tonight: Mutual Friends

Tonight  Mutual Friends and Ugly Sun will surely rock the Lockhouse Distillery & Bar off its framework. The establishment is located at 41 Columbia St. in Buffalo. The balance of local garage group Ugly Sun’s high-octane rush of punk and the atmospheric dreaminess of their fellow Buffalo natives, the synth-pop luminaries in Mutual Friends, will be quite the sight (and sound) to behold. Tonight: The Cordial Sins

Columbus, Ohio shoegazers The Cordial Sins pass through Mohawk Place tonight to rock indie jams that will tickle the fancies of fans of early Radiohead and Memoryhouse. Cordial Sins frontwoman/lyricist Liz Fisher is unmistakably the real deal, with a potent yet delicate voice  that’s got range and beguiling sweetness, while lead guitarist Corey Dickerson’s spirit animal is clearly Jonny Greenwood (a good thing). Opening the show will be local haze quartet Coral Collapse and psychedelic accordion rockers Church Key Social (think of Ian Anderson by way of the Doors). Doors open at 8pm and cover is $5.

Tonight: Joywave

Tonight Joywave blows the roof off Buffalo’s historic Town Ballroom for the final date of their ‘Thanks. Thanks for Coming’ tour. In case you’ve been living under a rock, Joywave are Rochester indie rockers fronted by multi-hyphenate Daniel Armbruster. Their latest album, Content, was released last year and gathered millions of listens with singles “It’s a Trip!” and “Doubt.” Be prepared to move and potentially lose your voice. Joining the party is LA-based singer-songwriter Sasha Sloan. You might recognize her porcelain voice from collaborations with Kygo, ODESZA and Kaskade, but now she’s singing her own awesome and moody pop songs. Also performing are Rochester-based rocktronica four-piece, KOPPS, and synth poppers, Humble Braggers. Tonight: Lights

In the early 2010’s, Lights was no stranger to Buffalo, playing venues such as Mohawk Place, Soundlab, Club Infinity, and an opening slot a free Canalside show. As time has went on, her electropop sound became more refined and mature, and her die hard fan base stuck with her.  Along with some cuts from her older releases, you should expect to hear a bunch of tracks off of her last release, Skin & Earth, released last year. This will be her first time upgrading to the Ballroom, and with support from DBG and Chase Atlantic, it’s sure to be a memorable night. Doors open for the show tonight at 7pm.  Tickets are available at the door for $22, with $1 from every ticket sale going towards PLUS1, an organization working towards bringing accessible renewable energy technology to undeveloped communities.

Tonight: David Byrne

Tonight legendary singer songwriter, multi-media artist/curator, and ex Talking Heads frontman makes a welcome return to UB’s Center For The Arts after a ten year absence to kick jams from across his storied career. Hailing his just kicked off American Utopia World Tour as his “most ambitious show since the shows that were filmed for Stop Making Sense, a very high bar indeed considering those Talking Heads shows, and the film that documented them, are unabashedly brilliant. David will be playing classics from his solo catalog, some well known classics, as well as new material from his upcoming 11th solo album American Utopia, out this Friday, part of his ongoing multi media Reasons To Be Cheerful project, a worthy endeavor during these turbulent and trying times. Tonight: Cavalcade

Long-running Rochester act Cavalcade will be trekking through the snow tonight to play a fervent set at Mohawk Place… Their music transcends genre, but falls somewhere between prog rock and psychedelic indie rock, with special attention payed to pop songwriting. Joining Cavalcade tonight are psych-rockers Moody Cosmos (who are returning after a lengthy absence), and the grungy punk trio of Major Arcana. Tonight: Orations

Buffalo’s Mr. Goodbar (Upstairs) is showing off the local goods tonight with a can’t-miss show featuring different shades of punk supplied by Buffalo’s finest. The stellar line-up includes the supremely talented, Orations, who will be performing their fantastic post-punk head nodders and toe-tappers. Expect an earful of jangling guitar riffs, punk-driven drums and Jess Collins’s beautifully resonant, mockingbird vocals. If you haven’t had the pleasure of listening to Orations, see them live tonight and walk away their biggest fan. Also taking the stage, the floor, the walls, the ceiling and your personal space, are punk rockers, Gun Candy. With a rough and tumble sound backed up by a rowdy performance this mixed 4-piece will get in your face for what promises to be a hell of a set. Tonight: Jack EP Release Party

Jack will be celebrating the release of their latest EP Alchemical Rounds with a shindig tonight at Mohawk Place with some help from Slinky X, dreambeaches, and Saturn V. The first two cuts from Alchemical Rounds, “Anxiety” and “A Kick A Knife” shows Jack expanding her punk/stoner rock into anthemic shoegaze territory, thrashing away beautifully with penetrating vocals and harmonies reminiscent of Jenny Lewis and Springtime Carnivore. Opening the show will be lo-fi punk skullcrushers Saturn V, the always wonderful dream pop of dreambeaches, and mysterious local punks Slinky X. Doors open at 8pm and cover is $10.
