We’ve been jamming all week on this swimmy indie rocker from Melbourne-based quartet Aeroplane Mode. “In A State” has all the hallmarks of indie rock greatness: swirly guitar plunking; reverbed out vocals; shimmering keyboard accents; and a driving beat. Here’s a raucous tune from Australia’s Hayley Mary – “Would You Throw a Diamond?” is a rip-roaring, pop-grunge affair that showcases singer Hayley Mary at her finest. You may recognize her as the frontwoman of The Jezebels, but this solo outing seems to suit her just fine as well. Bringing to mind the attitude of Hole with a tinge of Americana-punk energy (think The Gaslight Anthem), “Diamond” feels both anthemic and rebellious all at once. Led by frontman Kevin McGuire, TGS also features members of Oingo Boingo, OFF!, and The Muppets(!), with a production team that includes members behind Daft Punk’s Random Access Memories. The result is “I Kill You,” a five-minute blast of discordant guitars, distorted instrumentals, and unbridled emotion. Buffalo indie/emo mainstays Wild Once are back (or still here, rather) with a brand new music video for “Alone by Choice” – the video showcases the band’s members in various states of relative solitude before bringing back them together to play in the same room once more. In an impressively choreographed shot, singer Tom Mayer plays his guitar in a kayak… Hopefully it didn’t fall overboard. This video feels especially poignant after the socially distant hell that most of us have been living through this past year. For that matter, Wild Once’s unique brand of ambient punk-meets-indie-meets-americana energy is the perfect accompaniment.
