Thursday, January 30 @ 8pm Wishy @ 9th Ward   Indiana-based indie quintet Wishy makes a stop at the coziest basement venue in town this Thursday.  Formed in 2021, the project has exploded onto the blogosphere with their accessible shoegaze sound that rivals some of the most buzzed-about college radio standouts. Wishy is touring in support of their latest full-length release, Triple Seven, which came out during the dog days of summer via Winspear Records. Fans of Wild Pink, Girl Scout, or Ducks Ltd would be into this one. Local one-man R&B psych-pop act Ex-Pat opens the night up. The fun starts at 8pm with an $18 cover. Inspired by local cultures the Hooligans Range in instrumentation from accordions to electric guitars. Matt Smith’s Nervous System is a Buffalo-based project led by  Matt Smith (guitar/vocals) alongside Roddy Potter (drums) and Colin Pratt (bass/vocals).The band is composed of three long-time music scene veterans whose sound is much akin to The Velvet Underground or The National. Thursday, January 23rd @ 8pm Adelaide @ Milkies Adelaide has been playing the Buffalo scene for the past few years as mostly a solo artist, however, this Thursday will be a special one as the project expands into a full band. With backing musicians, expect Adelaide’s powerful vocals to be complimented by a lusher sound. Fans of Diet Cig, The Beths, or Snail Mail would be into the expansion of the Adelaide team.   Also on the bill is introspective singer/songwriter Ian McCuen who will be playing in support of their latest album As the Oceans Rise and the Empire Falls, which came out at the tail end of November. Orange Dog Club, the original act announced on the lineup, had to sit this one out. Friday, January 17th @ 8pm Captain Tom & the Hooligans @ Molly Maguires   Buffalo’s #1 polka band under sixty years old will play a fun one at one of South Buffalo’s finest dive bars on Friday. If you aren’t familiar, Captain Tom & the Hooligans exploded onto the scene post-Covid, sharing the stage with both punk rock bands and old time Polish journeymen, gaining fans along the way with their re-imaginative spin on polka classics. They’ve hit the local market pretty heavily over the past couple of years and you may have encountered the band inadvertently on their circuit of community festivals, breweries and one-offs. If you’ve ever heard a band playing polka with some stank on it, it was likely Captain Tom & the Hooligans. “Aye Karou is an energetic 5 piece rock band from South Buffalo, NY. Its members include Mark Barrett (bass guitar/vocals), Ray Fulton (guitar/vocals), Brian Battenfeld (drums/percussion), and Bill Fulton (guitar/vocals). They began playing together in the summer of 2007 as The Tragically Sith, a cover band playing songs by The Tragically Hip but altering the lyrics to be all about the Star Wars films. A decision to begin playing original music drove the group to form Aye Karou in early 2010. The goal of the band became to share their music with as many people as possible and have the absolute best time ever doing it. These past few months we have been increasing our content load and getting back on the saddle to provide our normal churn of quality local and regional bands for your listening pleasure. With that, we wanted to re-establish some of our defunct annual traditions, which include our heavily attended annual Holiday Party. Previously, we hosted this event annually at DBGB’s, however with the closure of the establishment, we had to find a new home for the showcase and we are happy to now collaborate with Milkies for this upcoming event. If you haven’t wandered to that section of Elmwood over the past couple years, the lounge underwent a giant revamp of their menu, branding, and interior since 2023 when the general manager Nikki Rosenberg took the realm. Wednesday, December 11th @ 6pm Disintegration @ Area 54/Amy’s Place Amy’s Place / Area 54 have a mid-week jam-packed show featuring, but not limited to, Cleveland post-punkers Disintegration.  The band is the meeting of some the minds behind Pleasure Leftists, Profligate, and Cloud Nothings. Touring in support of the band’s latest album Shiver in a Weak Light, released just this past October, fans of The Faint, Radio 4, or Handsome Furs would like this one. This bill is jam-packed for real though. It’s not often you have a five band midweek bill. Not to be overshadowed and joining the lineup is hardcore Florida punk band Armor, Philadelphia deathrockers Academy Order and local sets from the spooky Black and White Cat / Black and White Cake and Buffalo hardcore act Exhibition. $15 bucks gets you in. bugcatcher – “cadillac”

Rochester slowcore slackrockers, Bugcatcher, released a new single last month with their label Raincoated Records. The new track “cadillac” trudges on the tempo, it’s a slow burner reminiscent of Alex G’s early bedroom lo-fi recordings. The single has an earnest and no frills edge to it, recorded on a four track analog cassette tape as part of a year-long project via their label. “cadillac” finds itself with good company, splitting the LP with fellow Rochester DIY scene regulars Georgie, Home Videos and Kitchen. Frog – “Did Santa Come”

New York City Americana/family act Frog have a new original Christmas song that booming out the office speakers this afternoon. Danny & Steve Bateman’s new track “Did Santa Come” is a slice of the band’s upcoming album 1000 Variations of the Same Song, which is due out this February. The piano centric tune is the true story of Danny Bateman’s son and his hopefulness that Santa decided to visit nightly after Christmas instead of just the one-night-only event. “Did Santa Come?” was the question of the morning for two to three weeks after December 25th. Frog’s sound has a cozy earnesty to it, reminiscent of Daniel Johnston, Jonathan Richman, or Casiotone for the Painfully Alone. Check it out. Frog · Frog – DID SANTA COME

L33A.P – “D10R2004”

L33a.P carries over Brat Summer into Von Dutch Winter with her latest Boiler Room style track “D10R2004.” In the new single, L33A.P combines s eurodance beat with hyper-pop vocals to create an upbeat track about materialism and retro fashion to an upbeat instrumental. This could easily have been a B-side for Charli XCX’s latest album or a Venga Boyz return with a Gen Z ghostwriter. “D10R2004” exudes a good time, with vibe of a night out hitting the club ironically or unironically in mid 00’s fashion. Monotronic – “Looking Away”

NY/LA’s Monotronic is a loose collective of musicians, blending elements of upbeat pop and indie rock to curate their own style which is unbelievable catchy. The band’s “frontman” Ramsey Elkholy started the project in 2016 as the lead songwriter, bringing in an array of talented members of the always impressive New York City music scene in tow. The band has released the much anticipated single “Looking Away” off their forthcoming album Waiting for You, out in early 2025. The band’s new single has an upbeat Phoenix and Killers comparisons, with some worldly elements, a remnant of Elkholy’s time spent in Indonesia.  Check out the single “Looking Away” below and keep your eyes peeled for the upcoming album in Q1 2025.

Cecilia – “Don’t Wanna Cry”

Emerging electro-pop newcomer, Cecilia, released. a fresh nu-disco track that’s got us buzzin’. “Don’t Wanna Cry” is the debut from Cecilia, a self-taught producer and singer  and if this track is any indication of her capabilities as a songwriter, her future is bright. The song is all about getting over a former fling, reminiscing on better times. With that, you’d think this is a sad song but Cecilia turns this track into an upbeat disco pop gem that’s perfect for midnight at a club with smoke machines and Robyn’s “Dancing on My Own” next in queue. Fans of MS MR, Tove Lo, or the heavy synths of The Knife would be into Cecilia’s debut. Check it out.
