Shady Cove – “Passenger”

Portland based indie band Shady Cove, made up of Sarah Rose, Sarah Nienaber, and recent addition at drums Devon Shirley. “Passenger” is their latest track and damn it gave me a hankerin’ for the PNW. Soothing as fuck, I definitely felt myself floating away with the chill picked chords and various other sounds the band sneaks in. Who I can only assume to be Sarah sings in the most soothing voice I’ve ever heard in my life and I want them to write the soundtrack to my life (mediocre movie but with a bangin’ soundtrack). Fans of the Phoebe Bridgers and Julien Baker sad girl aesthetic would find a lot to enjoy here, between the genuine vocals and tightly produced music. You can hear passenger below from the band’s YouTube. Looking to add a finishing touch to your sad girl indie playlist? They’re also over on Spotify. Be on the[...]

VANDALISBIN – “Bottle of Wisdom”

“Bottle of Wisdom” is the latest from German based musician VANDALISBIN, real name Helena Niederstraßer. I couldn’t find find much, but she initially started as a street artist and has since gone on to do a lot after post-secondary school -including theater and music director. “Bottle of Wisdom” showcases Niederstraßer’s vocal range; with some impressive screamo-esque yelling (no small feat). It’s not quite emo, I suppose it’s post-emo or the amorphous “indie rock” tag? Either way, t’s a very mature and well put together piece for someone in their 20’s (I know current bands that would kill to have these chops). You can hear “Bottle of Wisdom” below from YouTube over on Spotify and Soundcloud.

Madge – “Shiversucker”

I literally had no idea what “Shiversucker” was going to be about before I popped it on and I still don’t, but I love it. Madge is a nonbinary artist originally hailing from Utah and, if you listen to the track, most assuredly an ex-Mormon. This track is straight up in your face, 120% Id and takes no prisoners; the first 20 seconds summed up: “cocksucker motherfucker make it shiver, make it pucker.” I hate trying to explain a beat, but if you enjoyed DDR growing up (or still do) or find yourself at “parties” and you’re either a brat or enjoy the company of brats…this is for you. If you’re a fan of ppcocaine like I am, you’ll be right at home here. You can hear “Shiversucker” below from Madge’s Soundcloud page or save it to your sultry fuck off playlist over on Spotify. If you like what you[...]

NInajirachi x BRUX – “How Could U”

“How Could U” is the newest collab between Ninajirachi “How Could U”and BRUX, two women very much in their prime musically. While we don’t get a whole lot of EDM tracks when we hear one we like, we can’t help but share it with you! Ninajirachi, aka Nina Wilson, is based out of Australia and has been putting out tracks since she was in her teens and hasn’t stopped since. Brux is also quite accomplished and broke in with her 2020 EP and hasn’t looked back. With shows the world over and finding big fans with Rolling Stone and DJ Times, a lightweight she is not. The track itself falls under the house genre (I think?) and features some fabulous beats that will drag you into the song and make an electronic fan out of you. The lyrics are mostly atmospheric and I could try to explain everything that’s going[...]

Paper Citizen – “American Song”

“American Song” is the latest from Singaporean transplant Claire Gohst, also known as Paper Citizen. Kicked out of her home at 17 after coming out as gay, Gohst worked her way up through the Singapore music scene until she decided to take the leap to Berklee College of Music in Boston. Now in LA, she’s continuing to craft heartfelt indie tracks with much aplomb. “American Song” is an upbeat guitar forward track that is best described as pop rock and is just so gosh darn wholesome we can’t get enough. Her earnestness and joy shine through, and that’s no accident: “American Song,” “is my ode/tribute to how much I love and cherish American music, and my nostalgia for how much live music has changed over the last decade. Despite all the things we disagree on in this country, I think we can agree that America has some of the best[...]

Soot Sprite – “I Went Swimming”

Soot Sprite is both an indie group from the UK and the most unappealing Sprite flavor I’ve ever heard of… Oh, and the former has released a new track “I Went Swimming.” Describing themselves as “straddling dream pop and shoegaze, a little melancholy and a little euphoria,” I can’t say I can argue with any of that. The track centers around Elise Cook’s vocals with shoegazy layers of guitar driving things forward with the drums. Her vocal range is impressive and nails the promise of “a little melancholy and a little euphoria” ten times over. Speaking to the track, Cook had this to say: “A song about recognising a red flag in your relationship and emotionally shutting down to that person and cutting things off. Some people describe this as getting “the ick” but that feels like a trivial term. Sometimes we have to learn from our mistakes and protect[...]

CHOO CHOO – “White Pigeon”

“White Pigeon” is the latest from CHOO CHOO, a three piece out of Brooklyn and “New York City’s #1 train themed rock band.” Written around a lyric singer Erica Enriquez thought of: “…I wonder if the white pigeon thinks it’s a dove, guess I’ll keep trying, hoping that it’s enough. I thought about the romance that is associated with doves and how pigeons have a similar resemblance but are not held with the same whimsy. This song is about trying, and grinding, and faking it until you make it.” Starting off very light and whimsical, the track quickly shifts gears into some rockin’ phuzzy guitar and doesn’t let up until the end. I was drawn in by Enriquez’s strong vocal performance and, frankly the music video (it was so fun to watch)! Fans of Soccer Mommy or Snail Mail would find a lot to enjoy here, as would anyone who[...]

Human Barbie – “Wishing”

The brainchild of Christopher Leopold, Human Barbie is here to scratch all of your lo-fi bedroom pop itches with his latest single “Wishing.” We last covered Human Barbie’s “Wait” back in 2022 here and we’re still all about it. Two years doesn’t seem like a long time but you can hear Leopold’s growth; a fuller sound, patience in letting the track do the work, and upgraded production. While I can’t promise you won’t catch a bit of the melancholia listening, it’s well worth the risk – guitars and drums swirl together and take their time keeping in tune with Leopold’s soothing vocals. Fans of Alex G or Clairo would find a lot to enjoy here, especially if you’re in for a relaxing evening like I will be tonight! You can hear “Wishing” below from YouTube or over on Spotify where you can save it to your burgeoning bedroom pop playlist.[...]

NotJustJake – “Tangled”

Philadelphia based NotJustJake brings us their latest single, “Tangled.” For those of you expecting a track about the 2010 Disney animated feature sharing the same name, you’re gonna be disappointed… For everyone else, if you were expecting a guy named Jake to blend folk and alternative into a neat little package then you are right on target and how the hell did you know? “Tangled” falls somewhere on the scale of sound between Modest Mouse and Fleet Foxes and after you give it a listen you’ll see why I’m 100% correct (no, I will not be taking questions). Guitar driven with fits of string accompaniment, everything leads back to singer Jake Margolis’ gravelly baritone waxing poetic about relationships and reflecting back on past experiences. Nothing feels forced or melodramatic and purely from the heart making me wonder…. “Jake…who hurt you?” You can hear tangled down below from the band’s YouTube[...]

Elizabeth M. Drummond – “Clowns”

While surprisingly not featuring a single clown in the music video, “Clowns” is Australian musician Elizabeth M. Drummond‘s latest track. Understated guitar and violin glide through with Drummond’s delightfully dulcet vocals, never quite falling into country music (does that exist in Australia?); this is decidedly a folk affair that will perk up the ears of listeners of Bright Eyes or Fleet Foxes. Speaking to the track, Drummond had this to say: “I wrote this song in 2018, and for some reason, I kept revisiting the demo years later. I re-recorded it with Vincent McIntyre in late 2023. It wasn’t about anyone specifically but rather the idea of walking out on something that you think is wrong or a bit ridiculous, whether it be a situation, a group of people and their values, a belief system, or a past version of yourself that you’ve outgrown or just don’t relate to. I[...]

Max Blansjaar – “Like A Bad Dream”

“Like a Bad Dream” is the latest track off of Oxford based Max Blansjaar‘s False Comforts album. At just twenty-one years old, he recorded the album in Brooklyn and it’s chock-full of delectable lo-fi indie pop gems. While I’m only covering “Like A Bad Dream” I can confidently say if you like this then the rest of the album will be well worth a listen. Straightforward guitar and a drum track drive “Dream” forward, centering on Blansjaar’s quirky and uplifting vocals (with a warm synth layer that sneaks in to seal the deal). The breakdown toward the latter half is chaotic and lovely; far more advanced than anyone else I’ve heard playing any instrument at twenty-one. Fans of Beck or Spoon would find a lot to enjoy here, all packaged in a spunky wunderkind that is certainly going places. Check out “Like A Bad Dream” below from Blansjaar’s Soundcloud or[...]

Montell2099 (ft Sam Bruno) – “GO!”

“GO!” is the latest track from Montell2099; presumably, a futuristic Montell Williams with an extra “L” who mixes up sweet tracks since that’s what people do in the future. In all seriousness though, other than those found in the artist’s name there aren’t any L’s here, purely rizzy W’s, swear to gyatt. The brainchild of Montell Pinny, there’s a lot to dive into here with tons off effects and beats meshed together. Based on what I could find out from some detective work, Montell2099 seems the maker of aforementioned beats and effects with the lyricist being Sam Bruno. Fans of Chvrches, Purity Ring, or fancy turntables and mixing would find a lot to enjoy here. If you’ve picked up what I’m putting down and think it’s up your alley, be sure to give “GO!” a listen. You can find it below from Soundcloud or add it over to your dance[...]

Dissolved Girl – “I’m a Beast”

Besides having an objectively awesome band name, Dissolved Girl has recently released their newest single “I’m a Beast.” A four piece based out of London, this is released in anticipation of their upcoming debut album. It has a distinct post-punk feel and wouldn’t be amiss as an intro to one of the (good) Underworld movies – maybe with Kate Beckinsale driving pensively in a car. Musically, everything is in service to singer Claire Edbrooke’s vocals; at times sultry, brooding, or simmering at the lower end of her vocal range. While she could easily sing me the alphabet and I’d probably still be impressed, I would instead check out the band’s other single “Silt” if you want more examples of her vocal chops. Be sure to give “I’m a Beast” a listen below from YouTube, over on Apple Music or Spotify. This is a relatively new band, but if you’re looking[...]

Pocket Full of Crumbs – “In My Home”

San Francisco based three piece Pocket Full of Crumbs brings us their latest single “In My Home,” and it’s being released in anticipation of a forthcoming album. As a general rule, my mother always said to avoid having a pocket full of crumbs, but I think we can make an exception here. This track goes into bedroom pop/lo-fi category of shoegaze – a pleasant mishmash but it checks out (trust me). It’s primarily guitar driven, hitting that nice sweet spot between urgent and slacker-y. Fans of Dinosaur Jr. or DIIV would find a lot to enjoy here; that phat phuzz always shines through and the chill, understated lyrics mesh well with the instrumentals. You can hear “In My Home” in your home (or wherever you happen to be – home is not mandatory). We’ve included the YouTube embed below, or you can save it in Spotify.

First Day Of Spring – “You’re Blue I’m Blue”

London based five piece First Day of Spring brings us their latest single “You’re Blue I’m Blue.” It’s the perfect guitar-forward jam for someone looking for good ole fashioned Midwest-flavored indie rock, particularly fans of Modest Mouse, Pixies, or Slow Pulp. The best way I could describe it is a sort of meandering tune punctuated by layered fuzz chords, which as a 90’s baby, always gets the happy chemicals flowing for me. Speaking to the track, front man Daniel Jones had this to say: “‘You’re Blue I’m Blue” is predominantly about tribes and ultimately the ability for those tribes to co-exist harmoniously and be among each other in the present. The partnership vocally with dear friend and vocal lead Mariah Maines has been a key part of the evolution of the song re-imagination.” You can hear “You’re Blue I’m Blue” down below from the band’s YouTube page or hop on[...]
