Orlando emcee Javy XI (ex-I) connects with Buffalo mainstay ToneyBoi for a fluttery new boom bap single that didn’t make the Happy Gilmore sequel, and that’s probably for the best. “Shooter McGavin” has a timeless sound built on brass. Trumpets pace each rapper as they serve bars “from Orlando to Buffalo.” The energy generated from that production fuels Javy and Toney – the veteran rappers match charisma verse for verse. Toney gets a Buffalo namedrop in on his crispy verse on the back half of the song as he enjoys the variety of flows he can test out on this tight beat. “Shooter” is a standout from Javy’s latest release, We’ve Become the OGs…Now What?, boasting a tracklist of more thoughtful wordplay and heavy on the soul sampling – a great pair if you ask me. Buffalo-based independent hip-hop label Deep Thinka Records has been a leading local institution since 1997 for discovering forward-thinking, inspiring MC’s dedicated to furthering the eclectic, socially conscious tradition of the genre. The label’s current roster boasts some of the city’s finest rap talent with artists like Mad Dukez, Billy Drease Williams, Chuckie Campbell, and Tanya Morgan each bringing a unique vision to the Deep Thinka camp. Tonight, Duke’s on Allen will host a hip-hop showcase for Herd Fest curated by the Deep Thinka crew, who have brought together the most exciting local rap talent, including members of prolific collectives EVC and Koolie High. Toneyboi Drops Lead Single from Leaders of the New Kool

The summer of EV III releases is getting into full swing with the debut music video from Koolie High’s Toneyboi. “Guacaroni & Cheese” is the first single off of the rapper’s soon-to-be released album Leaders of the New Kool, produced entirely by Neckbone Rollins. The street banger’s production is an awesome effort of bizarro grittiness, over which Toneyboi lays out bar after bar. The Malt Disney-directed video sees the rapper and accompanying squad ball out on some courts, do some skating, and post up effortlessly around the city. Toneyboi is headed down south to finish school, but this Saturday the crew is throwing an album release/going away party for the rapper at the Waiting Room.
