Merci, Mercy – “Shovel”

“You’re so fuckin’ nice/I wanna throw something at your head.” Damn. Merci, Mercy comes out swinging on her new single, “Shovel”, and just doesn’t let up. Allegedly a “playful take on romantic relationships” with a self deprecating jab thrown in (“pass me the shovel and I’ll dig for two”), it’s SPICY and I’m here for it. Steady acoustic guitars are balanced out well with swirly synth atmospheres to compliment her dulcet tones, a la Julien Baker on a snarky day before their coffee with 20% more pop. This is off of her upcoming EP is it me and is filled to the brim with smart, sharp lyrics (with assistance of Matthew Murphy from The Wombats and Chris Collins (Middle Kids, Greta Ray)). Not that age is necessarily any indication of musical talent, but you’ll probably be as surprised as I am that Mercy is only NINETEEN (her name is Mercy but[...]

Tonight: The Wombats

It would seem that The Wombats are developing a fondness for western New York, as tonight’s show marks the 3rd WNY show this calendar year for the Liverpudlian trio. And as someone who has been to these shows, I can attest that fondness has been returned as the previous occasions have been absolutely joyous affairs with a large vocal excitable crowd. The band will bring their particular brand of angst-ridden British ladrock back to The Waiting Room with a mix of material from their latest record, “Glitterbug” as well as their past indie rock anthems like “Kill the Director,” “Let’s Dance to Joy Division” and “Anti-D.” When I spoke to the band last Fall, they stressed just how important each live show was to them as they gradually grow in prominence over here to the level they’ve already reached in the UK. If you’re looking for an absolute party tonight,[...]

The Wombats

It was eight years ago the Wombats burst onto the scene, just fresh-faced youngsters at the time armed with roaring guitars, hooks galore, and a cheeky sense of humor to them. Since then, the band’s sound and popularity have only grown, with the group experimenting with electronics, approaching darker subject matter, and thrilling crowds at some of the world’s biggest music festivals from Glastonbury to Coachella. Earlier this year, the band released their latest album Glitterbug, which saw the Wombats’ new electro-pop sound flourish. The band has become famous for it’s raucous live show (a sweaty dance party of back to back singalongs), and tonight, brings that show to Buffalo. Prior to their set tonight at Waiting Room, I had the chance to chat with drummer Dan Haggis about the band’s changing sound and upcoming show. buffaBLOG: So the band’s sound seems to have change over the years, with your first record, A[...]

Just Announced: The Wombats

After gracing WNY earlier this summer with an appearance in Rochester, the Liverpudlian indie rock trio will next play Buffalo with a late Autumn visit to Waiting Room on November 25th. The band are hot off the heels of the release of their electropop-infused third album Glitterbug and will be sure to treat fans to a host of new and old NME-approved anthems. Having seen the band myself play an absolute barn-burner of a set at Glastonbury 2013, I can say defintively this will be a show not to be missed. Tickets will go on sale this Friday, August 28th, for $18 in advance, $20 day.
