Sound Devices: Why JeffRepeater Loves His Native Instruments Maschine

Editor’s note: Each week, Cory Perla of The Public asks a local musician to tell us why they love their favorite piece of gear. JeffRepeater is a local DJ and electronic music producer. He opens for the funk band, Lettuce, at the Tralf Music Hall tonight, Wednesday, Nov. 12. “Native Instruments Maschine is a software and hardware hybrid which provides for a flexible creative audio environment. The MIDI and sampling capabilities allow me to keep innovating creatively. It is also usable in the studio with the Maschine software for producing and also to trigger cue points and FX in the Traktor DJ software to play live, or any other MIDI capabilities for that matter.” – JeffRepeater

Sound Devices: Why wZa Loves His Custom Roland MV-8800

Editor’s note: Each week, Cory Perla of The Public asks a local musician to tell us why they love their favorite piece of gear. wZa is hip-hop producer and member of the Buffalo-based hip-hop groups Radarada and Death Picnic. His solo debut full length, AzN CHiKz, comes out this winter. “I love this piece of equipment because it is very versatile and has it’s own unique sound. Not a lot of other beatmakers I know use one as their main piece of gear, so it helps separate my sound from other producer’s sound. It’s also great because it works perfectly for live performance with the bands I play in — Radarada and Death Picnic. It’s great in the studio or my bedroom when I’m making my own beats. I also love it because it has my own design to it, so when I play it, I feel pretty cool.” – wZa

Sound Devices: Why Andy Czuba Loves His Om-Bot Psychic Cell Doom Wave Fold Noise Synth

Editor’s note: Each week, Cory Perla of The Public asks a local musician to tell us why they love their favorite piece of gear. Andy Czuba is a noise artist and Sugar City volunteer. His projects include La Parka, a collaborative noise music project with Bobby Griffiths/VWLS, and Flesh Trade, his solo noise project. “I discovered the Om-Bot Psychic Cells two years ago. They are the creations of Shane Vannest/Strangecraft, a sound artist, sculptor, and mask maker from Pittsburgh/now Las Vegas. Upon first seeing images and footage of the synths, I knew I had to own one. Two years later and I own six. They are part noise makers, part art, part puzzles. The Doom Wave Fold has proven to be my favorite one thus far. It has had the most use and I’m still discovering new sounds within it. I’ve used it in every one of my set ups since[...]

Tonight: The Public Picnic Fundraiser

The Public Picnic, a new collaborative project between Silo Session and the Public, will host its first fundraiser tonight at Mohawk Place, hopefully shedding a bit more light on the summer, Silo City located events curated by the live session series and still fresh, weekly publication. One tap tonight for musical merriment will be a trio of the city’s finest songwriters: Alex Berkley, Sonny Baker, and Laura Buckley. The Evil Things, a long time duo featuring Pine Fever band mates Andy Pothier and Levi Van Cleve, will come out of a long hibernation for a special performance this evening as well. Music begins this evening at 8pm. Event runners are asking for a donation of $5-$8 at the door.

Tonight: The Public Presents Mr. Boneless

Buffalo’s new alt-weekly is holding its second installment of The Public Presents tonight at Nietzsche’s – and they’re serving up a night of simple, down-home American rock with fixings of blues, bluegrass, country, folk, Americana, and everything in between. For headliners, The Public brought out one of WNY’s best folk-rock outfits in Mr. Boneless. This Queen City via Fredonia quartet melds gentle, woodsy folk with hard guitar blues, noise rock, punk, and grunge. With a true, authentic revivalist spirit, this group brings the honest passion and grit of its classic influences while  invigorating it with all the muscular energy of 90s DIY punk. Opening the night is the bluegrass-influenced Rear View Ramblers (featuring former members of the CPX), country-rockers Leroy Townes Band, and Jaye Bartell, on first, who admirably takes after the stoic, gritty deadpan of Johnny Cash. The show starts at 8pm at Nietzsche’s, with a $5 cover.

Tonight: Public School Presents Ladies Night

The next installment of Public School, the Public‘s monthly dance showcase, goes down tonight at Hardware, and this one is run by ladies only. Featuring an all-female cast of DJs, included the fresh faced duo, GLDN GIRLS, and DJ Yama, the latter whom was given a nice spotlight a couple weeks back in the weekly publication, will be holding the front and back rooms down all evening. The night kicks off at 11pm with a $5 cover. All ladies who arrive prior to midnight, though, can walk right in for free. Sadly, neither act tonight has any audio clips that I can find, so lets just hope tonight turns out better than this.

Tonight: The Public Presents

Kind of a slow night in Buffalo for music (unless you can still tolerate jam), so if you want to get your fix in, The Public will be throwing its first monthly showcase at Nietzsche’s to go along with the paper’s re-occurring Public School dance showcases across the street at Hardware. Headlining the evening, which is coined as “The Public Presents…,” will be buzzing Buffalo synth-pop act, Humble Braggers, fronted by Tom Burtless. The group dropped a couple solid EPs over the course of 2014, one that included a stellar cover of Drake’s “Hold On, We’re Going Home” (listen below), so keep a look out for them tonight. Rounding out the eclectic bill will be local MC Mic Excel, electronic artist JeffRepeater, and Essential Vitamins Crew ring leader, Cove. Music kicks off this evening at 10pm with a cover of $5. Cover will be $5 at the door, and the party gets started at 11pm.
