Mac DeMarco & The Flaming Lips at the Rapids Theatre (09/13/17)

If you were one a the lucky ones who was able to score tickets to Wendesday’s Mac DeMarco and Flaming Lips show at the Rapids Theatre, consider yourself lucky.   Mac DeMarco’s boyish charm was in full effect, cursing his way through a set in which he played some real smooth cuts off his most recent LP, a rippin’ Steely Dan cover, and cuts from his earlier LPs, including “Chamber of Reflection” and “Ode to Viceroy.”  The Flaming Lips brought along their usual extreme level of stage production, and kicked their set off with and explosive version of “Race for the Prize”, turning the Rapids Theatre into some sort of ethereal party, letting huge balloons into the crowd and blasting off an insane amount of confetti into the crowd.  Their set included songs from their latest LP, a cover of David Bowie’s “Space Oddity”,  some deep cuts for the freaks, and an unforgettable[...]

What will probably be one of the best indie shows of the year is happening tonight in Niagara Falls. The Rapids Theater will host two enormous acts, Mac DeMarco and the Flaming Lips, who will soon be releasing a split record where they cover each other’s songs. The two giants are only playing seven shows together, and the Buffalo area is lucky enough to be home to one of them. Mac recently dropped a fantastic full length, titled This Old Dog, so expect to hear some cuts off of that, the usual cuts off of his other records, as well as his some of his famous live classic cover tracks, of course. The Lips also had a great record drop early this year, titled Oczy Mlody. Be prepared for lots of bonkers stage antics and sublime moments throughout the crowd. Trashing an album like this is not easy, mainly because of how insanely easy it is. That Wayne Coyne, amidst accusations of cultural appropriation, unchecked egomania, and sad self-parody, would record an acid-damaged track-for-track cover of fucking Sgt. Pepper’s with Miley Cyrus reveals either a profound lack of self-awareness or an eager attempt to destroy his band’s legacy. It sounds like a joke your skeptical friend might have made about the band when you tried to get him to just hear The Soft Bulletin. As a long-time Lips defender and fan, I found the move exciting in its sheer audacity, and went into my first listen of the album with much hope. I’ve always been secretly kind of psyched about the Wayne-Miley friendship, and figured that the ballsiness of the project would warrant its existence.
