Tonight: Izzy True

Izzy True‘s Nope, released in early August, carries a sound that spans decades. With the pulse of 80’s pop and the instrumental sensibility of a 60’s psych-rock band at times, it’s a time warp of sorts, but one that melds together brilliantly. The album is a total daydream and there is a matured variance in comparison to the Troll EP released last year. Highlights for me include “Mr. Romance” and “Cruel Kings II”. Catch Izzy True tonight at Dreamland along with Chevron Bloom, Teenage Satan and Yellow House. Entry is $6. Show starts at 7:30.

Teenage Satan Drops Video for Cheerful Medley

Speaking of new local music videos, experimental folk act, Teenage Satan, has just released an accompanying clip for its latest EP, Cheerful Medley. The bedroom project of Kimmy’s Dan Bauer added to its steadily growing catalog near the back end of June with the 2-track release, and just yesterday, paired the songs with a John Heim produced video featuring cuts from old home videos and films. The frequent pensive and worried looks match well with Teenage Satan’s off-kilter pop sounds. You can stream the two tracks at Teenage Satan’s bandcamp page here. Watch the video for Cheerful Medley below.

Teenage Satan Releases Latest Song “She Was My Ocean”

Experimental bedroom project, Teenage Satan (now performing under the name Kimmy), sneakily dropped a new song a couple days before the fully fleshed band open from Krill last night at the Glitterbox. Fronted by local writer, Dan Bauer, the now four-piece’s latest tune, “She Was My Ocean,” sounds like Bob Dylan fronting mewithoutyou. With a newly expanded band, and new name, keep an eye out for future releases from Teenage Satan/Kimmy at the band’s bandcamp page. Listen to “She Was My Ocean” below.

Teenage Satan – Teenage Satan II

After a brief holiday hiatus, buffaBLOG’s Album of the Week feature is back in business. For the first time since the distant days of 2014, we have selected a local (or quasi-local) album, EP, or collection of songs that we find to be worthy of merit, and posted it up here for your listening pleasure. This week, for the first week of the new year, our collective ears were caught by the lo-fi bedroom folk songs on Teenage Satan’s second self-titled EP. Teenage Satan (aka Dan Bauer) doesn’t fully abandon the electronic nature of his first effort earlier last year, but he does take a bit of a departure on Teenage Satan II in the sense that he unplugs and picks up an acoustic guitar. The result is a little experimental, a little electronic, but decidedly folk-tinged this time around. Favoring humble organ tones over unearthly synths, Teenage Satan II[...]

Teenage Satan Releases Debut EP

It’s difficult to pin down the sound of Teenage Satan’s self-titled EP, which places dissonant vocal melodies over a mixed bag of distorted guitars and synths, but the sound is hauntingly dreamy. Daniel Bauer, the sole player behind the release, bares his raw instrumental and vocal style, which works well with the lyrical content as well. Due to the increase in Buffalo DIY labels such as Steak & Cake Records, the city has seen a rise in experimental bedroom projects such as these, thankfully bringing a new brand of non-commercialized independent artists to the forefront. Despite the dense landscape of weird psychedelic sounds that fills each of these songs, there is clear attention to detail in terms of representing the record’s overall feeling of bummed out frustration (I’m homesick and I’m sick of home/ I’m wallowin’). Bauer’s vocals bring this out in a surprising way, though, bringing to mind early[...]
