Supergoner – A Really Good Friend

Buffalo 90s indie rock outfit Supergoner has come back into the light after a break with the release of their album A Really Good Friend. With guitarists Sean Wild and Mike Fuller experiencing fatherhood and drummer Bill O’Connor moving to a farm in Watkins Glen, the band took a bit of a hiatus from Supergoner. The band has been a part of the Buffalo indie scene since 2003, with three of the members coming from the defunct Concubine, and bassist Lisa Yamagishi rounding out the group. A lot of the guitar work on A Really Good Friend pays homage to indie rock in the ‘90s. The guitar solo on “A Lot of Nothing” is reminiscent of the guitar stylings of a Dinosaur Jr. song; loud, smooth and rolling. Heavier guitar work comes out on “White Lines,” with the guitars coming in along the lines of punk, but also returning to the lighter side[...]

Column 30: Rick Masi’s On the Level: A Love Letter to Buffalo and the Sounds of the City

Tomorrow at the Amherst Theatre, will be the grand cinematic debut of one of Buffalo’s most exciting new voices, Rick Masi. His first feature-length film, On the Level, is a thrilling neo-noir about a teenage boy investigating the death of his brother and those he meets on the quest for answers. Masi’s  independently-funded feature debut was conceived as a love letter to the city he calls home and is chalk full of local talent. The film also rather excitingly features a whole soundtrack produced by some of Buffalo’s most talented up-and-coming artists. Earlier this week, I sat down with the film maker and some of the film’s featured artists to talk about the project. buffaBLOG: So tell me about On the Level? Rick Masi: Well, its a neo-noir drama about a teenager named CJ and his journey to find his brother’s killer. As he starts pealing away the layers, he realizes[...]

Day 7: Supergoner

When in doubt while searching for Christmas songs to post about during our annual 12 Days of Christmas post, you can count on Steak and Cake Records’ Christmas Meltdown 2 compilation. Today’s holiday themed song comes from local indie rock quartet, Supergoner, with their song “the most wonderful of time the year (feat Skosh).”  Supergoner makes probably one of the sappiest holiday songs actually enjoyable and manages to lose the cheesiness of the song. Stick around til the end for the Chirstmas horns.

Tonight: Soul Butchers

It’s going to get hella weird tonight at Nietzsche’s when some of Buffalo’s (and beyond) more out there bands – Soul Butchers, Bike Cops, and Supergoner – unleash some high octane pre Halloween wildness. There’s something delightfully skeevy, dangerous, and wrong about Soul Butchers, whose 18 Wheeler EP makes for excellent reckless driving music, while Chicago  thrashers, Bike Cops, and 90’s rockers, Supergoner, will round things out with more music from the wrong side of the tracks. Doors open at 9pm and expect a modest cover.

Tonight: Brief Candles

Hold your PBRs to the sky—Milwaukee shoegaze indie-rockers Brief Candles will be taking over Buffalo’s Mohawk Place later this evening for a night of droning and blissful dreamrock. Their music—thick, sludgy, and actually very pretty—does not easily draw comparisons, so you’ll have to head on over to the ‘hawk and check them out for yourself. The 90’s-tinged indie jams of Buffalo-based Supergoner will be flavoring the bill in the opening slot, making the legendary Mohawk Place exactly where you want to be tonight. Doors at 8pm, $5 cover.

Supergoner Post New Material

Buffalo quartet, Supergoner, posted late last week their new song”Glass Cannon.” The single is a 90’s flavored indie rock gem that encapsulates the vibe and feel of the era. Fans of Cloud Nothings, Dinosaur Jr., and Superchunk would dig this sound. Half of the members of Supergoner are formerly of defunct rock band, Concubine, so that’s why the vocals sound semi-familiar. Check out “Glass Cannon” below.
