Tonight: Past Life

Philly’s indie rock sweethearts Past Life breeze through Buffalo tonight with a stacked lineup at Sugar City. The four-piece is currently riding the wave of their recently released EP The Loudest Sound, featuring their stalwart single “Apollo” at the forefront. Banding together in the city of brotherly love, Past Life’s music has a connectivity that boasts of childhood camaraderie and intuition, even with just two years as a band under their belt. Meeting wispy falsetto with bleary distortion and spirited group vocals, these headliners promise a kinetic show saturated in guitar rock and sweat. Past Lives are joined on tour with Montreal’s Molly Drag, whose dismal crooning takes a page out of the Teen Suicide-Dandelion Hands book. Michael Hansford’s dusky melodies and morose lyricism provide a form of catharsis that gradually lulls you into introspection, which will likely be found on his upcoming album Thumper, out this September. The two acts are joined[...]

Tonight: Izzy True

Originally from Ithaca, Izzy True is no stranger to Buffalo.  They have not been back to Buffalo area since their relocation from Ithaca to Chicago, so heading to Sugar City for their show tonight would be a good way to spend your Friday night. They haven’t dropped any new tunes since the release of Nope. on Don Giovanni Records last year, so expect to hear a bunch from their back catalog, and who knows, maybe some new ones? Iowa City based experimental sax driven act, Curt Oren, will also be doing a set.  Jack and MORBS will be providing the local talent. Doors open for the show at Sugar City at 6pm.  While there is no cost listed in the facebook event, I’d bring around $5-$10 to support the touring musicians.  Keep in mind that Sugar City is an alcohol and drug free venue, and is also all ages.

Tonight: Shagg

Deep Space 8 will be playing host tonight to touring powerhouses Shagg. The Cleveland, OH punk outfit play with a ferocious energy, with a healthy amount guitar fuzz thrown in for good measure. Playing on tonight’s bill are fellow punks, Alpha Hopper, Nicky Reynolds and His Pushers, and Tap Water. This venue is quickly shooting up the list as the place to find your punk fix, and for a Friday night, you can’t do better. Doors at 7:30pm. Bring along $5 for the door and a bit more for fun and records. Shagg by Shagg

Tonight: Mac DeMarco & The Flaming Lips

What will probably be one of the best indie shows of the year is happening tonight in Niagara Falls. The Rapids Theater will host two enormous acts, Mac DeMarco and the Flaming Lips, who will soon be releasing a split record where they cover each other’s songs. The two giants are only playing seven shows together, and the Buffalo area is lucky enough to be home to one of them. Mac recently dropped a fantastic full length, titled This Old Dog, so expect to hear some cuts off of that, the usual cuts off of his other records, as well as his some of his famous live classic cover tracks, of course. The Lips also had a great record drop early this year, titled Oczy Mlody. Be prepared for lots of bonkers stage antics and sublime moments throughout the crowd. If you were unable to score tickets, you might be out of luck.[...]
