Must See Shows (1/29/25-2/4/25)

Thursday, January 30 @ 8pm Wishy @ 9th Ward   Indiana-based indie quintet Wishy makes a stop at the coziest basement venue in town this Thursday.  Formed in 2021, the project has exploded onto the blogosphere with their accessible shoegaze sound that rivals some of the most buzzed-about college radio standouts. Wishy is touring in support of their latest full-length release, Triple Seven, which came out during the dog days of summer via Winspear Records. Fans of Wild Pink, Girl Scout, or Ducks Ltd would be into this one. Local one-man R&B psych-pop act Ex-Pat opens the night up. The fun starts at 8pm with an $18 cover. Real Estate at the Tralf Music Hall (6/20/15)

Within ten minutes of me shuffling in, the entire venue goes from about 300 people to full capacity. Bodies are pressed up against the stage. Every crevice is filled on the floor. The band dives right into their muted, suburban-rock jams. “Have my adopted babies!” “Play at my wedding!” Proclamations like these along with “Fuck yeah, Real Estate” chants are hurled at the band from keyed-up fans. When you hear Real Estate, you don’t really picture their live show being accompanied by a rowdy audience. Understated sound and presence is their whole schtick, but it strikes me as less of a schtick and more of an inherent quality of all five members. In a 2014 interview with Pitchfork, guitarist Matt Mondanile states, “Our music possesses an ambient quality similar to electronic music — it’s pleasing to have on in the background.” There is no gimmick with this New Jersey born[...]

Tonight: Real Estate

You know what’s boring? Talking to Real Estate agents. You know what’s not boring? Going to see the band Real Estate at the Tralf tonight!  The New Jersey band’s easy going guitar driven music is the perfect vibey accompaniment to the eve of the summer solstice. Opening for the band is the excellent guitarist, William Tyler, whose instrumental pieces are reason enough to show up for the show early. But, if you have a Herd Fest bracelet, you should already being showing up early because the first 30 bracelets get in for free. Local sunny songwriter Bryan Johnson has just been added for local support, so celebrate the summer and head to the Tralf tonight. Doors open at 7pm and tickets are $23.
