New Madrid – “Are You The Wind”

Here’s an epic freak-folk journey from Georgia-based quartet New Madrid. “Are You The Wind” is an enigma – a song made of several separate movements, all just as majestic and creative as the last. The song never stops changing… Whether it’s swapping between electronic drums, ramping up the intensity, or slowing down to an abrupt stop, you never quite know what to expect next. Despite the constant element of change, the mix on this brings it all together – a blend of modern indie rock epicness and bedroom-pop warmth. Check it out below via YouTube – you can find New Madrid on Spotify and Bandcamp too.

Tonight: New Madrid

One of the exciting thing about Town Ballroom’s recent Leopard Lounge shows is that it has provided the perfect venue for some of indie rock’s rising stars or best kept secrets. The latter is especially true of tonight’s guest, New Madrid. It’s almost difficult to describe the sound of these Athens-based indie rockers because they almost seem to pull inspiration from every major era of indie rock and do so with a sound that’s effortless and immediate. Given their hometown, it’s maybe too easy to label that as “College Rock” but if any band in recent memory deserves that label it’s them. Yet the band also seem to carry with them the lazy slacker rock vibes of the early 90s as much as the wandering experimental rock of the early 2000s. New Madrid sounds immediately familiar but like no one specifically, which in itself is an incredible feat. The band arrives[...]

His earnest delivery and storytelling over acoustic riffs is reminiscent of Alex G, Kimya Dawson, or The Moldy Peaches. It’s an early set and a happy hour crowd[...]

Tonight: All Them Witches

Psychedelic rockers All Them Witches are passing through Buffalo today. The Nashville quartet are quickly becoming front-runners in the underground heavy rock scene, seeing as how they masterfully blend blues, sludge, and stoner rock into long, droning songs. RIYL The Black Angels, Kyuss, or Pink Floyd. Support tonight comes from New Madrid and Rochester stoner rock group (and perfect fit for this particular bill), King Buffalo. Tickets are $12, doors are at 7:00pm, and music starts at 8:15. Clarification: you should not confuse All Them Witches with Buffalo-based mathy duo All of Them Witches, although that would have made for a pretty awesome lineup.
