Tonight: Jack EP Release Party

Jack will be celebrating the release of their latest EP Alchemical Rounds with a shindig tonight at Mohawk Place with some help from Slinky X, dreambeaches, and Saturn V. The first two cuts from Alchemical Rounds, “Anxiety” and “A Kick A Knife” shows Jack expanding her punk/stoner rock into anthemic shoegaze territory, thrashing away beautifully with penetrating vocals and harmonies reminiscent of Jenny Lewis and Springtime Carnivore. Opening the show will be lo-fi punk skullcrushers Saturn V, the always wonderful dream pop of dreambeaches, and mysterious local punks Slinky X. Doors open at 8pm and cover is $10. Tonight: Fat Tuesday

Mardi Gras is now more or less a thing up here in Buffalo so you might as well celebrate it properly tonight at Mohawk with the return of their Fat Tuesday Mardi Gras Party. Dreamer Solutions, and Mr. Conrad playing piano in between sets all night long, there’s also going to be a New Orleans buffet, NOLA drink specials, beads… and it can all be yours for $10, or $5 after the food runs out. Doors open at 6pm.

Diet Cig at Mohawk Place (1/29/18)

Effervescent pop-punk duo Diet Cig kicked off their 2018 tour at Buffalo’s Mohawk Place on January 29th, beginning the final lap in support of their full-length debut, Swear I’m Good at This (Frenchkiss Records). Alex Luciano and Noah Bowman were joined onstage by Karli Helm (Pllush) and Anna Cory (The Spook School), marking their debut as a live four-piece. Diet Cig’s exuberant slop-pop sound incited a rapturous response from the adoring crowd, as Luciano advocated for music as a force for inclusivity, acceptance, and positive change. The band were supported that evening by Chicago punks Lala Lala and Scottish indie-pop quartet The Spook School. Lala Lala The Spook School Diet Cig

Tonight: Diet Cig

Tonight is a special night… Typically a powerhouse duo, Diet Cig are touring the US as a quartet, and they are bringing this specially curated lineup to Buffalo tonight for an evening full of peppy indie-pop. The band released the stellar Swear I’m Good At This last year, full of thrashing guitars and singer Alex Luciano’s charming vocals – expect to see a lot of that tonight. Joining them tonight are Glasgow band The Spook School, who are buzzing from the recent release of their third LP, Could It Be Different?. Released just a few days ago, this quartet specializes in shiny, quirky power-pop with a special ear for pop hooks. Also playing tonight are fuzzy three-piece Lala Lala. Mohawk Place is the place to be tonight. Doors are at 7pm, $13 in advance, $15 at the door. Swear I’m Good At This by Diet Cig

Tonight: Marigold

Marigold (aka Ben Lieber from Buffalo cosmic rockers Head North) is kicking off a solo tour tonight with a set of acoustic tunes. His songs are emotional and understated, combining the catharsis of bedroom-emo with the warmness and intimacy of an acoustic guitar. Support tonight comes from fellow Buffalonians heave (aka the hushed and ethereal musings of Emily Finlan) and Greg Priester/Mike Rakiecki from heavy-hitters Into the Wake, whose songs translate surprisingly well to the acoustic format. Tonight’s show is at Mohawk Place. Doors are at 7pm, bring $10 to get in. Counterfeit Art (Reprise) by Marigold

Lockport rockers Handsome Jack, who recently crushed it opening for Timber Timbre on this very stage will be back to spread their early 70’s rock gospel with Witty Tarbox opening the show with their funky and nihilistic surf rock. Tonight: Lazlo Hollyfeld & Friends Play Arcade Fire

Beloved Buffalo experimental rockers Lazlo Hollyfeld have previously taken on the music of Talking Heads, LCD Soundsystem, and Radiohead, and tonight they’re playing twenty… yes twenty Arcade Fire songs at the Mohawk, which is the closest we’ve gotten to the real thing since the fancy dress loving Arcade Fire has chosen to skip playing Buffalo for the last 12 years. If you caught their Radiohead In Rainbows shows last year at Iron Works and The Bug Jar you know Lazlo Hollyfeld will do a very good job, and with a whole bunch of accomplices joining them to generate that big Arcade Fire sound, tonight could be a real pre Halloween treat. Meanwhile, NYC rock legends The Strokes, who have played WNY, will be honored with a set of covers by local all-star tribute band Different Strokes, featuring Tom (Humble Braggers) Burtless, Ben (Dance Yrself Clean) Parsons, John (Girl Jeans) Grace, Ryan (The Slums) Schilia, and[...]

M.A.G.S. & The Slums at Mohawk Place (9/8/17)

Two of Buffalo’s biggest local bands—righteous indie-punks M.A.G.S. and hardcore heavyweights The Slums—celebrated the release of their new, highly-anticipated albums with a stunning double release show at Mohawk Place on September 8th. MAGS’ self-titled debut for Admirable Traits Records showcases Elliott Douglas’ knack for razor-sharp riffs and hooks that deliver like a knockout punch. Likewise, The Slums’ latest EP, Bloodsucker, refines their signature amalgam of knotty math-rock riffs, driving rhythms, and Steven Floyd’s caustic howl. Having rigorously road-tested their new material for months, M.A.G.S. and The Slums blew the roof off Mohawk Place with unrivaled abandon. Joining them that evening were local synth-pop heroes (and M.A.G.S.’ labelmates) Humble Braggers, and the Albany-based “dreamo” quartet Jouska, making their return to Buffalo since their Dreamland show this past February. Sheer Mag at Mohawk Place (09/05/17)

This past Monday, Sheer Mag returned to Buffalo to perform at Mohawk Place.  While they did play the same venue last year, they new have a new LP under their belts, titled Need To Feel Your Love.  They rocked through a bunch of tracks off of the new record, as well as a handful from their first three 7″s.  With stellar openings set from local act Mallwalkers, as well as touring power pop/punk four piece Lost Balloons, by the end of the night, Mohawk was packed and everyone was in the groove.  Check out some photos below, shot by blog photographer, Brendan O’Connor. Tonight: MAGS and The Slums Double Release Show

You might want to clear up your schedule and head down to Mohawk Place tonight.  Two great local acts, MAGS and the Slums, are both dropping new projects today, and are having one big party to celebrate.  MAGS are dropping their first full length on Admitrable Traits Records, titled M.A.G.S., and the Slums are putting out their final(??) EP, titled Bloodsucker. If I were you, I’d show up early because this one will probably be packed. Buffalo’s own Humble Braggers will be kicking things off, and Albany’s Jouska will also be returning to Buffalo to perform. Doors open at the Mohawk at 8PM, and it is $12 at the door.  Admission comes with one free MAGS CD, and the first 50 people though the door get a free “mystery swag bag” via The Slums.
