buffaBLOG Sessions: Addisyn Logan

We are so excited to unveil our latest iteration of buffaBLOG sessions to the public. Previously, the blog had done different live sessions series, ranging from simple cell phone videos, to live-to-tape recordings, to DIY pop-ups with a temporary set-up. This batch of sessions will be the first time we’ve partnered with a studio, Mammoth Recording Studio, based out of the First Ward. The videographer from the series is the very talented Devin Chavanne, whose work spans across Buffalo and beyond. Likely, if you pay attention to anything coming out of Buffalo’s start-up industry, you’ve seen his handiwork. This past fall, we gathered 22 people to execute the session which went off seemingly flawlessly and it excites us to continue the project and continue to showcase up-and-coming musicians from Western New York that need to be on your radar. Our first session features singer/songwriter Addisyn Logan, who has been steadily[...]

Jacob King – Drink From a Fox’s Head

Buffalo-based music scene staple Jacob King released two singles under his solo name earlier this month and it’s full to the brim with freak-folk psych-pop elements. Jacob King may be a familiar face/name, as he’s been gaining much buzz with his project T.T.T.T., as well as numerous stints in different bands throughout the local scene (most recently with Hal & Pals and Cramps tribute act, Side Stitches). The new batch of singles highlights King’s dexterity as a musician and ability to chameleon his style.   The first song, “Drink From A Fox’s Head,”  has a sun-soaked start that leans heavily into the more psych-y elements of the release, showcasing a bit of a Blind Melon tinge with some Burger Records parallels. Let’s hope the lyrics are a metaphor, as the chorus has King wailing “I drink my tea from a Fox’s head…” That’s just gross if it’s true and it’s[...]

Two-Man Giant Squid – “Weird Recordings (you’ve got some)”

Brooklyn post-punk act Two-Man Giant Squid released their driving new song “Weird Recordings (you’ve got some)” earlier this week. The track is the lead single off the band’s forthcoming self-titled album, out March 7, 2025 via Mint 400 Records.   The band started as a faceless solo bedrom project from Mitchell Vonikur, eventually fleshing out to a live fivetet. The new single is about the frustrations of the creative process, letting dead ends take up too much time and effort. Not everything has to be perfect, it’s important to embrace creativity and the voice-in-your-head isn’t always right.   “Weird Recordings (you’ve got some)” has the post-punk rawness of Parquet Courts, the crescendo indie groove of early Modest Mouse, and the franticness of LCD Soundsystem when they are giving Nancy Whang a rest. Check it out below.   Weird Recordings (you’ve got some) by Two-Man Giant Squid

Avery Friedman – “Flowers Fell”

Brooklyn indie artist Avery Friedman debuted her first single “Flowers Fell” yesterday and it’s been on repeat all morning in the buffaBLOG HQ. Although Friedman’s sound is well developed and deep, she only started playing live shows in July 2024. In a chance show-share encounter, Friedman gained the attention of Sister.’s James Chrisman, who eventually went on to record and produce the singer/songwriter’s debut album, New Thing.    “Flowers Fell” is the lead single off of the album, and is about the changing of the seasons and growing through art. In esssence, the song is inspired by the falling of the leaves, which in turn feed the ground, which make stronger environments. This is a metaphor for growing as an artist with experiences, heartache, and failure. These all make a person stronger in the end. Check out the single below and keep your eyes peeled for New Thing, out on[...]

Buddy Wynkoop – “Electric City”

Oregon art punk project, Buddy Wynkoop, have a new single that’s bound to get you to the dance floor. The four-piece formed in 2019, surviving the COVID-19 pandemic and seemingly emerging stronger as a project. They are a current staple of the lauded indie scene in Portland. “Electric City” is an amalgamation of some of the most noteworthy art punk acts. Their new single “Electric City” combines IDLES’ punky staccato semi-spoken delivery, with the bleep bloop playfulness of LCD Soundsystem and first wave nods to DEVO. “Electric City” is the first single off the forthcoming album Better Than Botox, set for release February 20, 2025. Mark it in your calendar. In the meantime, get a taste for the band that’s selling out venues in the pacific northwest below. Electric City by Buddy Wynkoop

Five Buffalo Acts We Want to Reunite in 2025

We’ve taken the office Christmas tree down and it’s back to business over here at blog headquarters. 2024 had its ups and downs with the local scene. We launched buffaBLOG version 4.0, witnessed the usual band break-ups/venue closings, but also saw the emergence of new artists that we are excited to listen to and share. With that, we’ve brainstormed Buffalo musicians that we would like to see reunite in 2025. We understand some of these may be a pipe dream, but think of this as more of a fantasy draft rather than an open letter.  Don’t get us wrong however, if any of these acts return in 2025, we are taking full credit. (photo via Unlisted Projects)  Jack Toft / Jack Topht Duh-duh-duh-duh-duh-duh-duh-duh don’t you miss Jack Toft? A wishlist for acts we would like to see reunited in 2025 would not be complete without the kookiest rapper of the[...]

bugcatcher – “cadillac”

Rochester slowcore slackrockers, Bugcatcher, released a new single last month with their label Raincoated Records. The new track “cadillac” trudges on the tempo, it’s a slow burner reminiscent of Alex G’s early bedroom lo-fi recordings. The single has an earnest and no frills edge to it, recorded on a four track analog cassette tape as part of a year-long project via their label. “cadillac” finds itself with good company, splitting the LP with fellow Rochester DIY scene regulars Georgie, Home Videos and Kitchen. If you’re into this one, well I have good news for you. Bugcatcher and Georgie are both in town for this Saturday’s (December 14, 2024) non-binary THEYFEST taking apalce at Area 54/Amy’s. Doors at 3pm with a flexible $10-$15 cover. spit takes and split tapes by bugcatcher

Frog – “Did Santa Come”

New York City Americana/family act Frog have a new original Christmas song that booming out the office speakers this afternoon. Danny & Steve Bateman’s new track “Did Santa Come” is a slice of the band’s upcoming album 1000 Variations of the Same Song, which is due out this February. The piano centric tune is the true story of Danny Bateman’s son and his hopefulness that Santa decided to visit nightly after Christmas instead of just the one-night-only event. “Did Santa Come?” was the question of the morning for two to three weeks after December 25th. Frog’s sound has a cozy earnesty to it, reminiscent of Daniel Johnston, Jonathan Richman, or Casiotone for the Painfully Alone. Check it out. Frog · Frog – DID SANTA COME

L33A.P – “D10R2004”

L33a.P carries over Brat Summer into Von Dutch Winter with her latest Boiler Room style track “D10R2004.” In the new single, L33A.P combines s eurodance beat with hyper-pop vocals to create an upbeat track about materialism and retro fashion to an upbeat instrumental. This could easily have been a B-side for Charli XCX’s latest album or a Venga Boyz return with a Gen Z ghostwriter. “D10R2004” exudes a good time, with vibe of a night out hitting the club ironically or unironically in mid 00’s fashion. Check it out below and have a good time. You deserve it. D10R2004 by L33A.P

Monotronic – “Looking Away”

NY/LA’s Monotronic is a loose collective of musicians, blending elements of upbeat pop and indie rock to curate their own style which is unbelievable catchy. The band’s “frontman” Ramsey Elkholy started the project in 2016 as the lead songwriter, bringing in an array of talented members of the always impressive New York City music scene in tow. The band has released the much anticipated single “Looking Away” off their forthcoming album Waiting for You, out in early 2025. The band’s new single has an upbeat Phoenix and Killers comparisons, with some worldly elements, a remnant of Elkholy’s time spent in Indonesia.  Check out the single “Looking Away” below and keep your eyes peeled for the upcoming album in Q1 2025.

Cecilia – “Don’t Wanna Cry”

Emerging electro-pop newcomer, Cecilia, released. a fresh nu-disco track that’s got us buzzin’. “Don’t Wanna Cry” is the debut from Cecilia, a self-taught producer and singer  and if this track is any indication of her capabilities as a songwriter, her future is bright. The song is all about getting over a former fling, reminiscing on better times. With that, you’d think this is a sad song but Cecilia turns this track into an upbeat disco pop gem that’s perfect for midnight at a club with smoke machines and Robyn’s “Dancing on My Own” next in queue. Fans of MS MR, Tove Lo, or the heavy synths of The Knife would be into Cecilia’s debut. Check it out.

Delta of Venus – “Disengaged”

Delta of Venus has been around for a bit, emerging from a 1993 basement where four friends put their creative endeavors together to pursue a united sound. The band faded out in the late 90s but re-united in 2023 after founding member Ellery Twining found themself in a creative rut after releasing solo material.  The band picked up right where they left off in the 90s, with the addition of a new singer Issy jumping behind the microphone. Blending elements of indie pop and shoegaze, the band’s sound has emerged with the current indie scene, with comparisons to Alvvays, The Beths, or Melody’s Echo Chamber. “Disengaged” is a promising return for Delta of Venus, with a second single already released “Slipping” – available for a full listen here.  Disengaged by Delta of Venus
