Medusa – “GET HARD”

A musician made in Buffalo is no better than a musician made anywhere else, but they sure know how to hit home… Revenge-pop artist Medusa recently made another mark on the city with their experimental anthem “Get Hard.” The range of delivery and melody given throughout the track is something I’ve only heard from artists such as 070 Shake and Doja Cat. It’s enlightening to know that such talent resides in the 716 area code. There’s currently a visualizer uploaded on YouTube and Medusa has spoken on the release of a whole music video so most definitely be on the lookout. Until then, enjoy the squelching synths lurching underneath Medusa’s smooth-but-sassy pop delivery. Stream it on Spotify & Apple Music

Medusa Releases Menacing New Single, “Woof”

Here’s another darktronica banger from prolific Buffalo-based producer Medusa. “Woof” is a grungy, genre-bending slog that beautifully aligns with their m.o.: [Medusa has] pledged their life to composing anthems of the scorned. Like the infamous gorgon, Medusa is all about avenging wrongs and turning you to stone – but, like, in a fun way. It’s revenge pop. “Woof” absolutely feels like a revenge jam – especially the recurring refrain of “I’m that b*tch.” Noisy, angry, and menacing, this one is sure to pump some adrenaline into your veins. Check it out below and be sure to add it to your Spotify if you dig it. WOOF by MEDUSA

Tonight: FOWLS

Angular indie rockers FOWLS make a return to Buffalo tonight, sharing a loaded stage with some of the area’s more notable talents. Hailing from Rochester, FOWLS have been a staple of the 585 local music scene for nearly nine years, which is is kind of like eighteen years in band years. The band’s light and dance-y sound is similar to that of FOALS, Bloc Party, and Bombay Bicycle Club. Tonight is a good chance to check this band out because they will be sandwiched with Medusa, fresh off their new single with Sons of Luther, Karrot Kake’s MIke Fridmann solo project KWKA, and of course the local staples that need little introduction, Aircraft. Doors at 9pm with a $7 cover. Wear a sweater. Palace to roam by Fowls

Sons of Luther Drop New Single “Kill Your Darlings” Featuring Medusa and Bkpr

Rochester indie guitar rock heroes Sons of Luther have teamed with Buffalo darktronica guru Medusa and beat maestro Bkpr to drop “Kill Your Darlings,” a dark, mesmerizing and modern take on British 90’s electronica. Floating on an impeccably tasteful Bkpr loop, Portishead  and Massive Attack vibes, and multi-tracked harmonies that reach for the infinite, “Kill Your Darlings” showcases some killer soul vocals from blog favorite Medusa and unobtrusive yet effective production from Sons mastermind Wren Werner that gets the job done. Check it out below, and keep an eye out for Medusa’s upcoming album Boy Of The Year due early this year. Kill Your Darlings feat. Medusa & Bkpr by Sons Of Luther feat. Medusa & Bkpr

Tonight: Sons of Luther

Driving alt-rockers Sons of Luther headline a diverse indie showcase tonight at Mohawk. With a dark, brooding sound, their most recent EP Do What You Can really highlights their riff heavy, new wave aesthetic. Joining the  line-up is dark-pop producer Medusa. To call their music danceable would be an understatement, but it’s also deeply dark, even menacing at times. Truly the most compelling aspect of their music is how cathartic it is. A perfect hybridization of aggressive synths, unique samples, lush harmonies, and diss track lyrics, Medusa is a singular artist and commands your attention. Also on the bill is indie emo-punks Passed Out. In a similar vein of Modern Baseball, Passed Out writes deeply cathartic lyrics that succeed in their mission of making you “very sad, then happy, then very sad again.” Finally, rounding out the bill is jangly dream-pop outfit Coral Collapse. With enveloping shoegaze textures, and a danceable driving[...]

Tonight: Televisionaries

Vintage Rochester surf rockers Televisonaries roll through town tonight at the Mohawk for a solid show featuring darktronica mastermind Medusa, garage punks Regular Sex, and Velvet Bethany. Bringing together rockabilly grit and California surf rock, Televisionaries rock hard with some clean lines and some off the rails guitar riffs. Buffalo darktronica mastermind Medusa has a new album in the works for early 2020, and everything they’re doing is always worth checking out, while Regular Sex and Velvet Bethany round out the evening with some fine punk rock for your kicking out the jams needs. Doors are at 7pm and cover is $7. Live From Three Sheets by Televisionaries

Medusa – “ET”

“ET” is the latest offering from Buffalo “genre-crossing, gender-bending” (their words not ours) producer/musician Medusa. “ET,” in this case, an acronym for both Estrogen and Testosterone and the popular 80s movie, is a dark and moody electro-pop banger. It’s surprisingly danceable despite its sludgy tempo and scathing condemnation of the transphobic experiences one might experience. Check out the widget below – if you are liking what you hear, check out their Bandcamp page for more scathing darktronica. ET by MEDUSA

Tonight: Space Cubs

Indietronica multimedia ensemble Space Cubs will be releasing their hotly anticipated LP The 4th Age, with a show tonight at Mohawk Place. Originally born in 2011 as a venture of songwriter/producer Suzanne Bonifacio, the group grew with the addition of multimedia whiz Shawn Lewis (Lesionread), and guitarist and visual artist Adam Pressley (Frenchpressley). It’s been fascinating to see how the band has progressed, growing their sound with each release anchored consistently by Bonifacio’s powerful, otherworldly vocals. Most recently, the band released three singles leading up to their new album; “Shelves” in November 2018, “Sideways” and “Circular” which were both released a few weeks ago. If the singles are any gauge, this new album is going to be special. With the ability to channel early period Eno ambient, as well as the jagged, angular art-rock of Radiohead, Space Cubs have consistently proven themselves to be one of the most interesting bands[...]

Tonight: Dr. Fadeaway

Tonight local DIY space Sugar City hosts a profoundly compelling  lineup of electronic acts featuring Detroit dream pop band Dr. Fadeaway, Medusa and Berlin Boys. The brainchild of SoCal native Alathea Reese, Dr. Fadeaway and their debut EP Cosa Rimane floats in on tight hooks, New Wave synths and jangling guitars that go rather nicely with vocals pleasingly reminiscent of Tom Tom Club and Memory House’s Denise Nouvion. Opening the show will be local neophytes Berlin Boys, of which little is known; and dark wave mastermind Medusa, who released her excellent sophomore album Rosie last month, exactly nine months after her staggering debut LP Residuals, albums redolent with tight beats, darkly sweet synth lines, layers and layers of sound , and cathedralesque vocal performances that are pure headphone candy. Doors are at 7pm and cover is $5. Cosa Rimane by Dr. Fadeaway

Tonight: Deadwolf

Tonight the Mohawk hosts a killer lineup of Buffalo bands headlined by Deadwolf and bringing together genres, scenes, and party people for an excellent late show with Medusa, The Sofa Kingz and Space Cubs. After some hot sets at the Trimania art party blowout and opening for indie darlings Sunflower Bean, Deadwolf will be unleashing more of their heavy psychedelia, while fellow blog favorites Space Cubs will be playing their last show of the summer (boo!) before going into the studio (yay!), making this already hot show an even more precious commodity. Local Infringing garage rockers The Sofa Kingz and dark electronic pop confectioner Medusa get the night going, with doors opening at 10pm and a cover of $6. Heavy Heart by Deadwolf

Tonight: Terror Pigeon

OK, your Monday probably sucks so far, but tonight is another story because Sugar City is hosting a show guaranteed to make it all worth while featuring life affirming art rockers Terror Pigeon and NYC  punks White Rope. Terror Pigeon, from Nashville Tennessee, put on an amazing and deeply affecting show at Dreamland (sigh) a few years back that was generous and uplifting in a humanist, inclusive way,  so that will be especially nice. Think a more hyper Dan Deacon and you’ll get the idea. White Rope will be joining the fray to play some skull crushing, modern punk for your liberating pleasure, while NYC media artist Eric Barry Drasin will be presenting/performing a Power Point opus on how to make it big in the speed metal game. Local evil hip hop artist Medusa and beloved rap malcontent Jack Topht will be rounding out the show with their nasty beats, which[...]

Medusa Shares Experimental Hip Hop Album

Lula, the fifth release of the year from Buffalo experimental hip hop artist Medusa presents an industrial, forward-thinking take on the genre. With vivid narratives on tracks like “Manic Depression” and “Suitcase,” the album balances unfeigned lyricism with sinister production. “Drowning In The Kiddie Pool” includes an ominous bass line, menacing percussion and Spanish lyrics while “Digitell” is an abrasive electronic track complete with jittery synths and mantra-like vocals. Never pursuing the same idea twice, Aula is an engaging work from an artist able to convey a distinctive sound throughout. Listen/download below.
