Tonight: The Demos

Spring is upon us (kind of), and there is no better way to both celebrate the warmer weather (sometimes) and clear your sinuses than to come out Nietzsche’s. This is a show you definitely do not want to miss. Even if dancing isn’t your thing, you will have fun you will have at this show. The Tins are sure to sonically bring the house down with their new-wave rock that features tight grooves, tasteful electronic percussion, nostalgic vocal effects, and truly amazing guitar shredding. Also on the bill is Rochester-grown The Demos, who will certainly have you dancing right out of your shoes with their upbeat, indie pop beats and catchy hooks that you’ll be humming for days. The Leones are also joining in on the festivities, and they’ll have you feeling melancholic with their dreamy guitar parts and distant psychedelic vocals. Don’t fret about feeling somber though, because they[...]

Tonight: Belle-Skinner

Tonight, Electric Avenue is changing things up a little bit with an evening of new folk music featuring Brooklyn’s Belle-Skinner and local folk rockers Leyda. Lilting, delicate and pleasingly esoteric, Belle-Skinner aka Maria Brosgol has a voice and guitar tone that is absolutely timeless, plus shes’s opened for the sublime Mitski, and at this point in time that’s all you really need to know. Opening the show will be baroque indie folk quintet Leyda, who’s bold and effecting Hallways EP came out earlier this year. Doors at 9pm and cover is $5. The Covers by Belle-Skinner

Tonight: Leyda Hallways EP Release Party

Baroque local indie pop band Leyda will be celebrating the release of their second EP Hallways tonight at the Mohawk with local support from Christina Stock and Jeanette Chin. Fronted by multi instrumentalist and vocalist Saffi, Leyda is in your face and ethereal at the same time, with vibe heavy rhythms and surging riffs charging over strings and a shimmering clarinet that cuts through the looming darkness, and beautifully wrought lyrics that have levels upon levels, features all in even sharper focus on the assured and brave Hallways. Doors are at 8pm and cover is $6. Tonight: The Tins

Local indie pop act The Tins are returning to Mohawk Place this evening.  Recently releasing their self-titled full-length album, The Tins have received a warm welcome among listeners.  Notably, The Tins has been included in the NACC Chart’s “20 Most Added Songs.” Having formed nearly ten years ago, The Tins continue to evolve as a band, most recently  introducing more psychedelic flavor with their latest release.  “Jubilee,” a new single from the album, is especially airy and light, seeming to take influence from The Beatles (“Penny Lane” crossed my mind on this one).  Having collaborated with the Goo Goo Dolls’ Robby Takac, The Tins is something to be admired, adding to the phenomenal sounds coming out of the Queen City lately. Joining The Tins tonight are Buffalo groups Witty Tarbox, and newcomers Leyda.  From the Capital Region, indie pop rock band Lucy rounds out the lineup. Doors open at 8pm to[...]

Leyda – s/t

Leyda evokes the feeling of college. Not Asher Roth’s college, not “Animal House,” but the actual emotional space of the place. You’re constantly two different people. On one hand, you’re hopeful, idealistic, excited to see how life turnedyer hand, day-to-day life is sad and often gross. Everyone seems to harbor a barely-concealed depression, relationships end messily and you spend a lot of time watching other people vomit. Those two layers of life exist simultaneously, both true in their own way but mostly irreconcilable, like two liquids in a suspension. Leyda lives in that tension, makes poetry out of it. “Wren,” the first song on the self-titled EP, sets this tone. It starts with the symbol-laden image of a burying a dead wren in fertile ground, with songwriter, vocalist and pianist Saffi Rigberg’s distinct and lilting voice matching the strange beauty of the moment. But soon, we’re back to reality –[...]

Twin Speak Group

Tonight: Twin Speak

Groovy with a fresh coat of grime thrown on top comes close to approximating Utica act, Twin Speak, who will be stopping by the Mohawk Place tonight. Twin Speak’s singular blend of psych rock, stoner, and post-rock makes an almost transcendental experience. Their latest record, SOULSS puts you through a kaleidoscope of twists, turns, riffs, and beats. Think Explosions in the Sky with exceptionally more teeth, that are sharper and dripping with something’s blood. Joining them are psych-rock garage rockers, Bold Folly and lyrically driven indie group, Leyda. This won’t be a show you will want to miss. Doors are at 8pm, music at 9pm. $6 for the door.
