Tonight: Jouska

Buffalo is in store for a solid Tuesday night treat tonight.  Albany/Philly based alternative/emo act Jouska returns to Buffalo, this time with a brand new EP under their belt. From Elson to Emmett was released just a couple weeks ago on Tiny Engines Records, and it features four brand new tracks.  Three local acts are also on the bill tonight, including slowcore duo Award Show, ambient folk outfit Be Locust or Alone, and an alt/emo four piece, Honey. Sugar City houses tonight’s show, located at 1239 Niagara Street.  The cover is only $5, and doors are set to open at 7pm.  Keep in mind that Sugar City is a drug/alcohol free space.

M.A.G.S. & The Slums at Mohawk Place (9/8/17)

Two of Buffalo’s biggest local bands—righteous indie-punks M.A.G.S. and hardcore heavyweights The Slums—celebrated the release of their new, highly-anticipated albums with a stunning double release show at Mohawk Place on September 8th. MAGS’ self-titled debut for Admirable Traits Records showcases Elliott Douglas’ knack for razor-sharp riffs and hooks that deliver like a knockout punch. Likewise, The Slums’ latest EP, Bloodsucker, refines their signature amalgam of knotty math-rock riffs, driving rhythms, and Steven Floyd’s caustic howl. Having rigorously road-tested their new material for months, M.A.G.S. and The Slums blew the roof off Mohawk Place with unrivaled abandon. Joining them that evening were local synth-pop heroes (and M.A.G.S.’ labelmates) Humble Braggers, and the Albany-based “dreamo” quartet Jouska, making their return to Buffalo since their Dreamland show this past February. Humble Braggers Jouska The Slums M.A.G.S.

Tonight: MAGS and The Slums Double Release Show

You might want to clear up your schedule and head down to Mohawk Place tonight.  Two great local acts, MAGS and the Slums, are both dropping new projects today, and are having one big party to celebrate.  MAGS are dropping their first full length on Admitrable Traits Records, titled M.A.G.S., and the Slums are putting out their final(??) EP, titled Bloodsucker. If I were you, I’d show up early because this one will probably be packed. Buffalo’s own Humble Braggers will be kicking things off, and Albany’s Jouska will also be returning to Buffalo to perform. Doors open at the Mohawk at 8PM, and it is $12 at the door.  Admission comes with one free MAGS CD, and the first 50 people though the door get a free “mystery swag bag” via The Slums. Tonight: Jouska

If you thought your Wednesday night wouldn’t be very exciting, Dreamland has you covered.  Two touring bands will be rolling though the Franklin St. venue, along with some locals. Jouska will be returning from Albany, who recently signed to Tiny Engines records with a new full length album that dropped late last year, titled Topiary.  New Jersey pop rockers, Teenage Halloween, will also be rolling through town. Show up early to catch local hard hitters Uniform OPR and Tomoreaux. The gig is set to kick off at 8pm, and bringing $5 to support the two touring acts is a must.

Tonight: Super American

Another solid mix of bands is slated for Nietzsche’s. Tonight, Buffalo staple Super American headlines the evening’s 4-band lineup. Fresh off their latest single, “Sloppy Jazz,” the group brings their amped up, reformed pop punk to the table. Joining them will be fellow Buffalo rockers Cooler, who combine grunge and fuzz with early 2000’s emo undertones. Rounding out the bill are two Albany based groups. Jouska just released their debut album, full of DIY and lo-fi garage rock. County Mike combines indie and emo with a stripped-down alt-folk approach. Doors open at 9pm, with a $5 cover. The show is 21+.

Jouska – “Marcel”

Albany-based ghost rock quartet, Jouska, have slowly begun rotating into Buffalo’s local music scene. The band has an upcoming show on September 10th with Super American and Cooler in support of their yet-to-be released Topiary. “Marcel” is the lead single off of the album and a great first step into Jouska’s repertoire. “Marcel” is a highly introspective track where Jouska’s lead-singer Doug Dulgarian reflects on growing up around stifled creativity. The song comes off as a diary entry, with allusions to heartbreak and getting older. The experience is both depressing and rewarding. Life changes, and people move on. Fans of M. Ward or cryptic Brand New will enjoy Jouska’s latest. Topiary is set for release on September 6th, but you can peep “Marcel” below and catch their upcoming set at Nietzsche’s next weekend.
