Tonight: Izzy True

Originally from Ithaca, Izzy True is no stranger to Buffalo.  They have not been back to Buffalo area since their relocation from Ithaca to Chicago, so heading to Sugar City for their show tonight would be a good way to spend your Friday night. They haven’t dropped any new tunes since the release of Nope. on Don Giovanni Records last year, so expect to hear a bunch from their back catalog, and who knows, maybe some new ones? Iowa City based experimental sax driven act, Curt Oren, will also be doing a set.  Jack and MORBS will be providing the local talent. Doors open for the show at Sugar City at 6pm.  While there is no cost listed in the facebook event, I’d bring around $5-$10 to support the touring musicians.  Keep in mind that Sugar City is an alcohol and drug free venue, and is also all ages.

Izzy True – Nope

Ithaca, NY based indie-punk quartet, Izzy True blends an intoxicating cocktail of catchy, sweet melodies and emotive lyrics to form their debut full length record, Nope. Released in August on New Jersey punk label, Don Giovanni Records, Izzy True don’t strain themselves with trying to be different for the sake of being different. Instead, the four piece use their separate identities to create a sound they can feel good about calling their own. Headed by frontwoman and guitarist, Isabel Reidy,, her brother and lead guitarist,Silas Reidy, bassist, Jon Samuels, and drummer, Angela Devivo. Lead singer, Isabel started making music originally under the name, Fight A Scary Dog, a bluegrassy, indie-folk project. The four members of the band came together first as close friends and played in the Ithaca Underground, an arts and music community in the Ithaca area. Izzy True‘s Nope, released in early August, carries a sound that spans decades. With the pulse of 80’s pop and the instrumental sensibility of a 60’s psych-rock band at times, it’s a time warp of sorts, but one that melds together brilliantly. The album is a total daydream and there is a matured variance in comparison to the Troll EP released last year. Highlights for me include “Mr. Romance” and “Cruel Kings II”. Catch Izzy True tonight at Dreamland along with Chevron Bloom, Teenage Satan and Yellow House. Entry is $6. Show starts at 7:30.

When it comes to medium blending, Izzy True of Trumansburg, NY doesn’t disappoint. Front-woman Isabel Reidy is both parts songwriter and cartoonist, but as an artist she’s one hundred percent muscle. I heard about her newish band (the Troll EP was released June of 2015) when I saw a preview for their record release with the excellent Painted Zeros from NYC, and after checking out the fascinatingly bizarre music videos for songs “Swole” and “Absolute Troll,” I was hooked. Reidy combines sweetly masochistic imagery–such as greasy elbows during cake baking or rotten fruit–on the EP, while evoking dissonant tones and melodic hooks that bigger-time artists like Alex G or Waxahatchee would dig. With her brother Silas Reidy on bass and Chris Ploss on drums, the tunes are smooth in their transitions and timing, but conundrums on a deeper level. Don’t think too hard.
