Into The Wake – Behind the Shadows

Being in a band is hard. Into the Wake (ITTW) knows. First thing’s first, this band knows how to grind – they’ve been doing so almost non-stop since they debuted in 2017… But sometimes your practice space starts to crumble (literally), then life’s regular grind starts to slip into the cracks. It starts to feel impossible to get back up on your feet. For that reason, these guys should consider their new EP, Behind the Shadows, an absolutely triumphant step forward. They’ve crafted a super-tight blend of post-hardcore, hard rock, and heavy-emo, full of hooks and enough tasty guitar sounds to satisfy any tone snob. BTS is easily their best work yet, a batch of songs that would sit comfortably on a shelf next to genre heavyweights like Citizen, Superheaven, or Balance and Composure. Album opener “Prey” is an immediate standout – ITTW has never been afraid to experiment with sounds, but don’t let the electronic drum intro[...]

Tonight: Can’t Swim

New Jersey quintet Can’t Swim is making a stop in Buffalo tonight, with strong support from lots of other great bands. Their tasteful blend of pop-punk and post-hardcore will close out the evening, while the dreamy and shoegazy emo-punk of Super Whatevr and Gleemer warm up the crowd. Local mainstays Fernway and Into the Wake will also be playing tonight. Tonight’s show is at Mohawk Place. Snag a ticket from a band for $12, or buy one at the door for $14. Doors are at 6pm.

Into The Wake Release Dark, Three-Song EP

Into The Wake has been through a lot… For them, 2017 was a year of many shows (solo and otherwise), but an equal amount of loss and frustration. They soldiered on through a member change and still managed to hit the studio with Jay Zubricky at GCR this past autumn… Now standing strong as a solid quartet, the band is moving forward as always, having just released a three-song EP called Listening Through Silence. On Listening Through Silence, the band has honed their biting, political approach into something more emotional and nuanced. Into The Wake has polished many of their rough edges here – their songs are flush with lead guitar, and layered thick with shimmer and ambiance. There now exists a palpable darkness to their hard rock/heavy-emo songwriting – think somewhere between A Perfect Circle and Thrice. On lead single “The Note,” the band trades anger and guttural screams for tasteful[...]

Tonight: Marigold

Marigold (aka Ben Lieber from Buffalo cosmic rockers Head North) is kicking off a solo tour tonight with a set of acoustic tunes. His songs are emotional and understated, combining the catharsis of bedroom-emo with the warmness and intimacy of an acoustic guitar. Support tonight comes from fellow Buffalonians heave (aka the hushed and ethereal musings of Emily Finlan) and Greg Priester/Mike Rakiecki from heavy-hitters Into the Wake, whose songs translate surprisingly well to the acoustic format. Tonight’s show is at Mohawk Place. Doors are at 7pm, bring $10 to get in. Counterfeit Art (Reprise) by Marigold

Cooler at Mohawk Place (1/12/18)

Despite the frigid winter storm raging outside that evening, Mohawk Place was absolutely brimming with excitement for Cooler’s EP Release Show on January 12th. Playing to a hometown crowd of their friends, family, and peers, Cooler opened their set with stripped-down renditions of fan favorites, before premiering new material from their latest Admirable Traits release, Buried EP, the band’s first as a trio. By dialing down the “phantom phuzz” that characterized their earlier music, Cooler emphasized the heartfelt songwriting, cathartic hooks, and taut musicianship that forms the essential core of their sound, played onstage with raging intensity and emotional conviction. The band were supported that evening by Honey COMA’s spartan confessionals, Post Prom’s disaffected anthems, and Into the Wake’s volcanic nightmares. Honey COMA Post Prom Into the Wake Cooler
