Tonight: Jouska

Buffalo is in store for a solid Tuesday night treat tonight.  Albany/Philly based alternative/emo act Jouska returns to Buffalo, this time with a brand new EP under their belt. From Elson to Emmett was released just a couple weeks ago on Tiny Engines Records, and it features four brand new tracks.  Three local acts are also on the bill tonight, including slowcore duo Award Show, ambient folk outfit Be Locust or Alone, and an alt/emo four piece, Honey. Sugar City houses tonight’s show, located at 1239 Niagara Street.  The cover is only $5, and doors are set to open at 7pm.  Keep in mind that Sugar City is a drug/alcohol free space.

Tonight: California Cousins

Rochester math/emo/punks California Cousins are headlining a Buffalo show tonight in support of a genre-blending tour package definitely worth your attention. Philly’s Caracara are swinging through courtesy of Flower Girl records, bringing their emotional baroque-pop/shoegaze/emo with them. Joining them are Richmond, VA act The Weak Days, who have been accurately described as “emo by association, pop-punk in denial.” Rounding out the show are Buffalo act honey, whose pop-tinged emo always guarantees a good time. Tonight’s show will be at Sugar City. There’s an $8 donation at the door to support the touring bands. Doors are at 6:30 – keep in mind Sugar City is an alcohol-and-drug-free safe space! Rounding out tonight’s lineup are the heartwarming harmonies of Buffalo emo mainstays honey. Tonight’s show is at Sugar City. Doors are at 6:30pm, get there early to support all the great bands. $10 in advance, $12 at the door. A friendly reminder to all that Sugar City is a drug and alcohol free space. The Nashville act specializes in sparkling, noodly indie rock for fans of American Football, Foxing, or Mineral. Joining the showcase are equally fantastic Buffalo emo acts Marigold and Honey, as well as newcomers Worse Things. Tonight’s show is at Milkie’s on Elmwood. Doors are at 6:00pm, music starts at 7:00. Wildhoney at Mohawk Place (05/04/17)

A couple weeks back, Baltimore pop/shoegaze five piece, Wildhoney, returned to Buffalo for yet another fantastic show.  The bands ability to not only create an insane wall of sound, but their ability to keep the music super catchy and interesting were in full effect, coming together to pull off one of the best sets I’ve seen so far this year.  The new tracks that they played sounded incredible live, as did their older releases.  Local emo four piece, Honey., and Albany based pop act, Cannon the Brave, kicked things off, making for a memorable night.  Check out some photos from the show below, shot by blog photographer, Brendan O’Connor. honey Cannon the Brave Wildhoney

honey – Better Luck Next Year

It’s that inexplicably romantic, mid-autumn time of year where the leaves have changed but haven’t quite fallen. The kind of weather to make you feel nostalgic about just about everything – sweater weather if you will. It’s the perfect time of year to curl up and get sentimental with a new emo album. Here’s our recommendation for this week – they are a band called honey and their new EP is called Better Luck Next Year. honey is a duo from Buffalo, Katlin Purpura (bass/vocals) and Eric Bechard (guitar/vocals) to be exact. Better Luck Next Year hits that sweet spot between bedroom-pop production and true, emo sincerety. They recorded BLNY DIY-style over the course of one day in Syracuse with their buddy Tim Hall. honey’s male/female harmonies blend perfectly with the ever-so-slight lo-fi warble of the EP’s production. It bridges the gap between an early 90s emo sound and newer acts like Tigers Jaw, Petal, or Pinegrove.[...]
