Tonight: Gulfer

If you have been on the internet recently you have probably read one of those “emo revival” list articles everyone’s been writing lately when in reality emo was never really over, at least not for everyone. It’s always the same list of popular contemporary emo bands and what I am saying is Gulfer, the band hitting up the Glitterbox tonight, would fit in with the listicle genre nicely. The four piece  from Montreal spits out twinkly math rock for fans of Brave Bird, or Texas is the Reason meets Algernon Cadwallader. People Like You, from Boston, will be adding some screams as well as spoken word parts. Comprised from members of I Kill Giants, People Like You continues the math music trend, mostly categorized with weird time signatures and focused more on instrumentals than vocals. Power pop punks Wild Pink from Brooklyn open while Buffalo’s prodigal sons Del Paxton are[...]

Del Paxton Releases Split on Topshelf Records

At long last, Del Paxton‘s split with Gulfer is out on Topshelf Records. Anyone who follows buffaBLOG has surely seen our coverage of Del Paxton (starting when the group clinched the award for #1 local song of 2013 with “Motion Sick”). With only an EP to its name thus far, we’ve been eager to get our hands on some new stuff from the mathy/emo three piece. “Paline” showcases the spiraling guitar that we’ve come to love/expect from Del Paxton. Having been to half a dozen (+) Del Paxton shows, it is a pleasure to finally hear a studio version. In fact, if Death Cab for Cutie had any angst left in them, “Paline” might be the result… I’d like to find the musician who can deny the true joy of bassist Zach Schoedel’s funky riff at the one minute mark. “Bad Batch” starts with one of those impossibly noodly riffs[...]

Del Paxton to Release Split on Topshelf Records

We’ve been hearing whispers on the streets for months that one of Buffalo’s best bands will be getting picked up by a big indie. We’re excited to announce that the rumor mill is correct… Del Paxton, our resident emo-flavored math-rockers, have signed to the thriving indie label, Topshelf Records. The Paxt will release a new 7″ split on with fellow Topshelf signees Gulfer. Topshelf will be a good home for the band – Del Paxton is now labelmates with legendary veterans Braid as well as strong up-and-comers like You Blew It!, Prawn, and The World Is A Beautiful Place & I Am No Longer Afraid To Die. Del Paxton’s contributions to the split were recorded between go-to local producer Jay Zubricky of GCR and Cleveland’s Whiteout Audio. The split is set to drop on April 7th. Photo Credit – Nick Karp
