In it’s 12th year, Pitchfork Music Festival continued to prove its longevity, boasting three sold out days and another jam packed, stellar lineup. Thousands flocked to Union Park in Chicago, making this year what seemed like the most crowded the festival has been in our three years of coverage. With another incredible year filled with countless memorable moments in the books, we take a look back at the weekend through the lens of our blog photographer, Brendan O’Connor. Take a look at some photos from Friday below, featuring Priests, Dawn Richard, Hiss Golden Messenger, Vince Staples, Frankie Cosmos, Danny Brown, Kamaiyah, Dirty Projectors, and LCD Soundsystem. Tonight: Danny Brown

Raucous Detroit rapper Danny Brown has consistently pushed genre boundaries with the release of his last three albums, balancing experimental, club-ready tracks with more introspective lyrical cuts. His latest record, Atrocity Exhibition, was released via influential electronic label Warp Records and features the artist’s typically boisterous drums paired with cold, industrial instrumentals. Artists like Kendrick Lamar, Ab-Soul, Earl Sweatshirt, Kelela, and Petite Noir make appearances making for yet another imaginative work from the rapper who has carved out one of hip-hop’s most distinct sounds. Catch the rapper perform tonight at Buffalo’s Town Ballroom along with fellow Brusier Brigade artist Zeelooperz and Maxo Kream. Tickets are $27. Doors open at 7pm.

Rustie & Danny Brown – “Attak”

Rustie and Danny Brown collabed on a song together, which isn’t the first time. With Danny’s lyrical flow and Rustie’s electronic masterpiece, “Attak” is a complimenting blend of high energy. The official video was released today. As URL increasingly seeps into the IRL world, this video uses superimposed text, suggestive emojis and rolling lyrics that are reminiscent of having fun with 3D word art in the early days of Microsoft Word. It’s perfect. Rustie – Attak ft Danny Brown (Official Music Video) from Music on Vimeo.

Tonight: Danny Brown

Danny Brown is said to be one of the most unique voices in the rap game, he stays representing Detroit and is known for his engraving in Fool’s Gold Records. Rapping since he was a child, Danny Brown (full name: Daniel Dewan Sewell) went from the streets to the studio, after being arrested when he was 19 years old for drug distribution and manufacturing charges and possession with intent to distribute. His 2010 self-released album The Hybrid became a launching pad toward signing with acclaimed record label, Fool’s Gold. The following year he released his XXX free internet mixtape. “I’m just getting started,” he said. Now, the 33-year-old rapper is on The Old Danny Brown Tour, for Old, his October album release. It has been said that good hip-hop sheds light on personal experience. Danny Brown’s rhyme and content has always been inspired from his struggling youth and the city[...]

April 14th

April 19th marks the 20th year human beings have been able to buy and/or steal Nas’ seminal album Illmatic. To celebrate the glory of himself, the MC has launched a multi-city tour, which you are doubtless aware of if you found yourself pondering your life’s ambition at Coachella over the weekend. Illmatic XX, a reissue of the 1994 record featuring freestyles, remixes, and demos will be out April 15th, or tomorrow as we like to say around here. This will then be followed by a documentary chronicling the making of the Greatest Hip-Hop Record of Forever and Always titled Time is Illmatic, which I guess can loosely be defined as an admission that everything Nas has done since 1994 exists on the spectrum between abject shit and could-be-worse. As an artist, he has offered little of value in a modern world where everyone has a favorite Jay-Z song but can’t even think the name[...]
