Bo Milli – “Chewing Gum”

Fresh off her latest EP, Making Friends, Emilie Østebø brings us her latest single “Chewing Gum” under her stage name Bo Milli. Hailing from Bergen, Norway, we’ve covered Bo Milli a few times (you can find those here). “Chewing Gum” is a fun track with a rollicking guitar that gives way to a slick bass line that would make my bass player friends go “nice.” I felt the grunge 90’s vibe with Østebø’s focused yet relaxed boppin’ lyrics. While being grouped in with other indie luminaries Soccer Mommy, Bully, and Phoebe Bridgers may seem like a daunting task for a 23 year old, she had this to say: … Just kidding I have no idea. I’m sure it’s probably flattering or humbling at a certain level but just let her make her music. She did have this to say on the track though: “‘Chewing Gum’ is a macho-anthem expressed with unconvincing[...]

Bo Milli – “Good Kid”

After a couple of exceptional singles in 2022 (see our features on them here and here), Bo Milli, the 22 year old musician from Bergen, Norway, brings us her latest with “Good Kid,” a cathartic indie rock jam with a crushing chorus. Bo Milli puts an earnest voice to collective dread and paralysis of a generation staring at the void of anxiety and doom that is the oncoming climate catastrophe. Bo opens the song by singing curiously, “I turn on the TV / I see people doing pretty much the same as me,” lyrics that brings the apathy of a generation towards the environmental crisis into the long view. Soon that melancholic reflection turns self critical with the titular chorus bursting forth in a cathartic and crushing “I’m a good kid / I’m not meant to change the world / I’m sorry I’m already such a disappointment.” Bo Milli continues[...]

Bo Milli – “FOMO”

Our friend from Bergen, Bo Milli, is back with another single, the angsty indie rocker “FOMO.” Specializing in brutally honest lyrics, Bo outlines the struggles of modern love through her use of crunchy guitars; anxious and urgent chord switches; and her glassy-eyed vocal prowess. Fans of Soccer Mommy, Lomelda, and the almighty Phoebe Bridgers are going to find lots to love here. About the song, Bo explains: “I like writing lyrics that sketch out what someone would say to another person if they were actually honest. In that vein, ‘FOMO’ is about the breaking point in a casual relationship where I lose my cool – in a very literal sense: while that other person is out partying with cool people, I’m unable to hide my true feelings on the matter, unable to stay emotionally distant and hard-to-get. It’s about losing a game you’ve been engaged in with someone, because you[...]

Bo Milli – “How It Is”

Bergen, Norway-based indie rocker Bo Milli caught our ears with this not-so-lighthearted jam. The upbeat instrumentals belie the ennui that powers the song lyrically – see the line about those ever-pervasive Strokes hits that seem to have powered the rest of indie rock composition since 2001… Whether that’s a good or bad thing is up to you to decide. Further confirming our hypothesis, about the song, Bo says: “Originally the chorus was this tiny bit where I say “you know how it is” — a sort of anti-chorus undermining the idea of a thesis statement. This song is mainly made up of lines gesturing towards a vague dissatisfaction everyone seems to relate to, without really saying much outright.” You can also find “How It Is” on Bandcamp (below) and Spotify.
