Steak & Cake Records

Let’s get this done! This Friday, Buffalo’s own Steak & Cake Records, the Potomac based DIY label, will host the very first showcase of the inaugural Herd Fest at College Street Gallery, featuring a stacked lineup of local favorites. Space Wolves will kick off the night at 7:00 with a set of their signature blend of surf / garage rock, followed by the rhythmic indie pep of the NYBRKFST (pronounced “New York Breakfast”) at 7:45. Next up on the menu of delicious sonic treats is Alex Berkley & the Atlanta Falcons at 8:40, which is bound to be bangin’ if their performance at the buffaBLOG Birthday Party earlier this year is any indication of what Berkley and the boys are capable of. I’m especially excited for the return of A Hotel Nourishing, closing out the showcase with their set at 9:25. You won’t want to miss this two-piece, consisting of[...]

Five Acts To See At Buffalo Porchfest

The Elmwood Village’s Buffalo Porchfest is back for its second installment tomorrow from 12pm to 6pm. After debuting in early October, the one-day festival has grown bigger and better, boasting an impressive collection of local talent performing on porches and balconies all over the village for its spring installment. As with most fests, deciding on what to check out is always the hardest part. While you can view the full map and schedule here, we thought we would make your life a bit easier and let you know the top five acts to check out tomorrow. Brimstone Blondes @ 586 Lafayette Ave (1pm-2pm) We’ve been a fan of the Blondes since we stumbled upon them a few years back while hesitantly scoping out the lineup for a high school battle of the bands competition. The four-piece is a best described as throwback B-52s meets Talking Heads-esque outfit centered around lead singer Matthew[...]

Alex Berkley & the Atlanta Falcons

Next up for this week’s video installment from our 4th birthday party at Duke’s last month is a clip from Alex Berkley & the Atlanta Falcons.  Reuniting after a five year “off season” (because football), The Falcons, which features past and current members of Bear Exchange, Lazlo Hollyfeld, Besyno, Wooden Waves, and more, are fronted by local singer/songwriter Alex Berkley. Watch the video below, complete with an ultra charismatic intro by yours truly. You can also check out past sets from Harmonica Lewinski and Mr. Boneless here. Tune in next week with our final birthday party video with Real People. Photo Credit – Robert Emhof

buffaBLOG 4th Birthday Party Artist Spotlight: Alex Berkley & the Atlanta Falcons

This week we have been previewing the five great acts we have in store for our fourth birthday bash this Saturday at DBGB’s. Third on the lineup is Alex Berkley & the Atlanta Falcons. You may have seen Berkley’s solo workings before, singing songs about Dawson’s Creek or Star Trek on an acoustic guitar any given Monday night in the heart of Allen, but this Saturday’s performance will be different. Berkley is set to be backed by his newly reformed backing band, the Atlanta Falcons, consisting of Sonny Baker (Lazlo Hollyfeld, Wooden Waves, A Hotel Nourishing), Billy Fulton (Wooden Waves, Ay Karou) and Colin Griffin (Bear Exchange). Berkley’s songwriting style is quirky yet sincere, comparable to Jeff Mangum/Neutral Milk Hotel or the Mountains Goats. The band is set to perform numerous blasts from the past, including songs off Lists and Listlessness, Berkley’s 2008 debut full-length that was retroactively declared buffaBLOG’s top local album of 2008. Music kicks off[...]
