Tonight: Advance Base

Tonight electronic minimalist troubadour Advance Base returns to Buffalo to ply his dark trade at Nietzsche’s with local indie rocker Ex-Pat and Nashville lo-fi indie band Sinai Vessel. The current project from Casiotone for the Painfully Alone’s Owen Ashworth features the Chicago singer/songwriter channeling Nick Cave and Phosphorescent’s  Matthew Houck against sparse and increasingly bleak electronic soundscapes, so be prepared to go deep into your own emotions. Tour mates Sinai Vessel are an evocative lo-fi folk trio who just released yours, an EP of new material last month that leans away from garage rock and into folk. Ex-Pat aka Patrick Weil opens the show with his laid back and very psychedelic brand of indie. Doors are at 8pm and cover is $10. Animal Companionship by Advance Base

Tonight: Advance Base

Two Orindal Records label mates are slated to hit Buffalo tonight. Advance Base and Karima Walker both bring their own unique brands of lo-fi pop to Mohawk Place. Joining them will be two local solo acts, Lara Buckley and Matt Script. Headlining the show is Chicago-based act Advance Base, the solo project of former Casiotone for the Painfully Alone member Owen Ashworth. Still riding the wave of his well-received record Nephew in the Wild, Ashworth’s sound is layered an array of electronic keyboards, employing minimalist arrangements that pair well with his heavy-hearted, soul-baring lyricism. Tucson singer-songwriter Karima Walker offers up an ambient and experimental kind of folk music, combining traditional folk melodies with tape loops and samples. Sound collage artist Lara Buckley opens the show, followed by loop-machine singer-songwriter Matt Script. Doors open at 7pm, show starts at 8pm. Tickets are $10 at the door.

Headlined by always-in-his-head, Advance Base, along with support from Rochester’s ice bar, experimental Jax and blog favorite Damian, this  for those who want a calm and cool night with artists who will talk to your heart. I’ve heard the name Advance Base around the internet for a bit, but never stopped to give it a listen. #bloglife. I played a few songs last night and was instantly like “Oh wow, this sounds like Casiotone for the Painfully Alone.” Guess what? Advance Base is Owen Ashworth, the voice and mind behind Casiotone for the Painfully Alone, an act known for its incredibly descriptive lyrics teeter tottering in between sad and self aware, and sometimes both. Another layer which makes this cake super sweet is the debut Buffalo performance by Ice Bar, who’s very impressive 2014 ante meridium came out of nowhere and[...]
