Tonight: Meat Wave

Tonight might turn out to be quite a raucous Wednesday… Actually, I take that back. Tonight’s officially gonna get pretty rowdy. The Dirty Nil and Meat Wave will be stopping through the Waiting Room tonight; both bands will be slinging their brand of loud, aggressive, indie-punk. If you would like a comparison, both bands are contemporaries of METZ, Pissed Jeans, Single Mothers, or even Cloud Nothings. Opening the show are the Rochester-based post-hardcore/screamo dudes in DRUSE and the Fredonia-based alt-rockers in Ellsworth. Tickets are $12 and doors open at 6pm.

Misconstruity Preps Comeback Album

Misconstruity were one Buffalo’s premiere post-hardcore/emo bands of the early 2000s, having opened for the likes of Brand New, Coheed and Cambria, The Weakerthans, and many more. After almost a decade of inactivity (band members have since gone on to play in Wooden Waves and Atlanta Falcons, among others), the band reunited in late 2013 and has been gradually recording its newest offering chè vuoi? with longtime pal and contributor Jay Zubricky. Misconstruity also sprung for the Paul Leavitt treatment (Yellowcard, Pentimento, The Dangerous Summer). So far, we’ve only been treated to two of the new tracks from chè vuoi?. Check out one of the new jams below. RIYL: Jimmy Eat World, American Football, Early Foo Fighters.  

California Cousins – George’s Bridge

Rochester emos California Cousins are no stranger to buffaBLOG. We’ve been following them and theirs since the dissolution of Keeler last year. Luckily, Cali Cousins are still hanging around, blessing us with a new EP full of noodly emo jams that they’ve christened George’s Bridge. I’m sure you can all reminisce of a time where you and your high school friends jumped off an old derelict bridge or had a clandestine rendezvous by a graffiti-laden abandoned structure. California Cousins tug on your nostalgic heartstrings in that way (and boy am I a sucker for some good emo jams). “Soft Earth” kicks off this EP with some twinkly guitar riffs reminiscent of Snowing, Del Paxton, or Tiny Moving Parts. Guitarist Christian Ortiz is a twinkle daddy for sure (it’s a Facebook group for twinkly guitar-riff lovers, so get your mind out of the gutter). Tonight: Comfy

Yace Booking is having one hell of a weekend. After the “Golf Pop” extravaganza at Dreamland tonight, please head straight to Nietzsche’s for an incredible lineup showcasing Utica buzz-magnets Comfy. Comfy specializes in that special sort of self-deprecating indie rock; think a lo-fi version of Weezer’s Blue Album with all the shredding and ooh-oohs you can stomach. Support tonight comes from Modest Mousy newcomers Passed Out, Sonny Baker’s solo project, and the Geneseo-based Comfy contemporaries in Soft Cough. Doors are at 9pm, music starts at 10pm. Bring $5 and be sure to tip your bartender.

Tonight: JOHNS

The West Side basement scene is in for a treat tonight. Ohioans Goldmines and Uno Lady will be stopping through Buffalo. Resident brooding rockers JOHNS are headlining the show tonight. Female-fronted noise-rock outfit, Hot Tip, will be rounding out the bill. Expect an interesting evening that inspires a range of emotions. Ask a punk where the Glitterbox is (and deal with it when you figure it out). $5 cover, music will be going from 7pm-10pm.

Tonight: Worriers

Straight out of Brooklyn, Worriers have been blazing across the country in true punk glory. Half sprechgesang (a la Hold Steady, use a dictionary!), half spitfire-punk, this band is leading the pack with socially conscious lyrics and songs that feel like a sucker punch to the face. Unsurprisingly, Worrier’s newest release, Imaginary Life, was produced by the legendary Laura Jane Grace of Against Me! fame. Worriers will fit right in at Sugar City this evening. Green Dreams and the Patterns are slotted for support. The show is only $6 and it starts at 7pm.

What a day for music in Buffalo, huh? Once a year, 103.3 the Edge puts together a showcase of impossible acts that you’d never think to see together on a show. That showcase is known as EdgeFest 2015. Pentimento Shares New Song from I, No Longer

One of Buffalo’s shining stars is getting us all psyched for their new album. The emotive punks in Pentimento have just released “Sink or Swim,” one of two shared song’s from the band’s upcoming album I, No Longer (10/23). The track is an upbeat jam packed full of the cathartic lyrics we’ve come to love from this Buffalo four-piece. This time around, legendary emo-punk engineer Paul Leavitt (Yellowcard, Cute is What We Aim For, All Time Low) has left his mark on the project. Musically, Pentimento is staying true to form while vocally, singer Jeremiah Pauly has polished his trademark growl into a smooth croon. Fans of The Wonder Years or The Dangerous Summer are sure to be pleased. Check it out below.

Full Body Releases Debut EP

Full Body is the new project from Skirts drummer Dylan Vaisey, couretsy of Rochester-based label Bangkok Blend. Skirts is one of our favorite Rochester acts here at buffaBLOG, so naturally our interest was piqued by this particular side project. Full Body is hyper-aware, literate indie rock for fans of The Front Bottoms, Pavement, or Sebadoh. The album features an eclectic mix of styles that ranges from ultra grungy to half-sung, half-spoken emo odes. Despite Vaisey’s ultra straightforward and blunt delivery, this batch of songs has a cryptic feel. Check it out a cut from the group’s debut EP Go Get It below.

Tonight: Inlite (Last Show)

Bummer! Tonight we say goodbye to a longtime contributor to Buffalo’s canon. The Grand Islanders in Inlite are playing their final show, after close to a decade of existence. The Brit-tinged synth-rawkers are sure to put on a wonderful farewell tonight at Mohawk Place. Fans of Franz Ferdinand, The Bravery, or We are Scientists should get their last taste of this outgoing quartet. Support tonight comes from Sleepy Hahas and The Naturalists – what better of a duo to send Inlite off with? Doors are at 8pm and it’s only $5.

Father Baron Releases Debut EP

Strung Way Out is the new EP from the Buffalo crust punk outfit Father Baron. The three piece is no strangers to buffaBLOG – the Crook brothers and Trey Hollowood have been previously seen in impressive Buffalo acts that span multiple genres (think Mandy K, Arctic Death, and Nelson Type). But if you’ve come here expecting jaunty indie rock or dream pop, you should brace yourself. In typical fashion, these dudes have genre-hopped again; Father Baron is about as filthy as it gets. Some other great words to describe the act include (but are not limited to): disgusting, vile, angry, and brutal. Not convinced? Listen below.  

Tonight: Sonny Baker w/Dreambeaches

Free show alert! One of Buffalo’s most prolific musicians, Sonny Baker, will be performing selections off his upcoming, full band EP Flesh It Out later on this evening at Hardware. Baker just shared the EP’s latest track, titled “(underachiever),” earlier this morning. Check it out below. As if that wasn’t enough, the local dream-surfers in Dreambeaches (Humble Braggers’ Corey Bzibziak) will be rounding out the bill. Queen City Cartel are the people to thank for tonight’s wonderful (did we mention free?) showcase – tonight is round six of their biweekly Thursday series in the back room of Hardware. Like we said, there’s no cover tonight. The show is set to start at 10pm, but make sure you are 21+ before you head out the door. We’ll see you all for some drinks and music tonight at Hardware.

Infringement is one hell of a festival, isn’t it? In case you haven’t had your fill, we’d like to bring attention to the showcase at Sugar City tonight, also known as the Sugar City Masquerade Ball. Costumes are encouraged! Obviously we’re a music blog, so we’re here to tell you one of our Rochester faves, the jangle-poppers in Pleistocene, will be kicking off the night right. They’re followed up by Baltimore, MD’s Joseph and the Beasts (who sound like Father John Misty meets Of Montreal), as well as Buffalo stalwarts Like a Panther and Wolf. Pleistocene plays at 7:00 so make sure you get there early! $5 entry, $3 if you have a costume on. Let’s get festive.  

Tonight: Rochester Invasion

As part of Infringement Festival, buffaBLOG has put together a sort of “Rochester Invasion” if you will. We are bringing a bunch of our favorite Rochester bands to Buffalo tonight for a night of music and co-mingling. We’ve curated a genre-spanning selection of some of Rochester’s finest, including: electro-synth masters KOPPS; the powerpoppers in The Demos; surf-tinged garage from Buffalo Sex Change (PS, nice name guys); dreamy 60s-poppers Howlo; all rounded out by Hannah Weidner and the Doorway Talkers. Nietzsche’s is the place to be tonight. The show starts at 9:00pm and is VERY reasonably priced at $5. We Buffalonians will bring the wings to snack on if you Rochester-bros will bring some Kodak film on which to capture our debaucherous night. Ah, unity. See you there.

Animal Sounds Releases New EP

Animal Sounds is an instrumental quartet out of Rochester. The foursome’s new EP, Fling Mingus, is a three-song, funk-tinged adventure through twinkly guitars and interesting rhythms. Since releasing a debut demo last summer, Animal Sounds seems to have ditched some of its funk background for an “indier” sound. Still, “Money Is A Mind Game” is a great example of AS’s genre-defying tunes, blending mathy, Minus the Bear-like emo with a tinge of classic rock like Blue Oyster Cult and a pinch of start/stop fury of a band like Buffalo’s A Hotel Nourishing.
