Love Ghost – Cintas Perdidas
Love Ghost is a buffaBLOG frequent (here is their IG), with Nick Sessanna previously and positively reviewing the effort’s prior two albums, Momento Mori and Gas Mask Wedding. Cintas Perdidas is Love Ghost’s, aka Finnegan Seeker Bell and company’s, latest release. Bell was inspired to create Cintas Perdidas after vacating the USA to immerse himself in the culture of our neighboring country, Mexico. Love Ghost’s typical fuck-it-all attitude is somewhat reigned in this time. Bell and his collaborators tackle the full spectrum of the human condition in a bilingual, multi-cultural album that blends emo, alternative rock, grunge, and hip hop, with speckles of Latin influence.
“Fragrance,” featuring Sofia Thompson, begins with a murky guitar that kind of clicks, adding to the percussion. The mix is overall savory with poppy drums and an emo-ish vocal delivery. Thompson’s breathy vocals hush you into a false sense of security while the lyrical content prompts lovesickness. Track three, “TIME TRAVEL” (feat. Yung Dupe) teeter-totters with synthetic noise that turns into a string-like arpeggio. Bell claims, “I’m not gonna lose my second chance with you,” amidst a menacing grand piano somehow hidden in an already-sparse recording. The screaming in the background adds to the emotional toil.
Song five, “Ignore,” has soft hums and angelic guitar that condensates on the side of the mix’s cavernous walls. The 808 kick and snare add energy to an otherwise depressing tune. Optimistically, this contradicting feature may rouse you to build up the willpower needed to get through a broken relationship. “Got me blowing smoke out my window / I’m thinking ’bout the sorrow in the moon’s glow,” summarizes the pain of unwanted condemnation. After the strange and unexpected “Insane Asylum” comes “Dear Boy.” Track eight (feat. RAYBEN) has a misty atmosphere. The title’s words bound back and forth about the ears – a siren’s coo? The pulsing synthesizer helps the head bop, and there’s a spicy electronic lead backed by the gear-like churn of programmed drums.
The gospel choir of “GOD COMPLEX” is followed by tune ten, “Runnin’ with the Wolves,” in which El Burger performs. Offbeat distortion and yelling vocals are accompanied by booming bass leaping aggressively from note to note. Again, the sound of shifting machinery guide you through an angry stupor. “TELEVISE,” or Song eleven, is reminiscent of the dimly lit tropics. Bell ponders, “Why is every death televised?” while tickling percussion demands attention. Kind, ghostly synth settles hazily. Finally, the album closer, “WASSUP,” which features Dani Torres, is boisterous, flaunting dangerous and windy, bell-based keys. The lyrics of the chorus beg you to sing along (or unapologetically shout if you’re having a bad day). In time, the song ends with half-whispered vocals that echo into nothingness as well as screams interestingly turned way down.
With Cintas Perdidas, Love Ghost releases a consistent, Latin-influenced emo/grunge/alt-rock album that plays banger after banger. Cintas Perdidas is FFO Bring Me The Horizon, Lil Peep, and Nedarb.
