Japanese Breakfast at The Bug Jar (7/16/18)

Japanese Breakfast returned to Rochester, NY for a sold-out show at The Bug Jar on July 16th in the midst of their 2018 USA tour. Packing the tiny club to its full capacity, Michelle Zauner and her bandmates played an electrifying set of emotionally-charged, shimmering indie-pop, culling key tracks from 2016’s Psychopomp (Yellow K Records) and last year’s Soft Sounds from Another Planet (Dead Oceans). Radiating pure joy, Zauner’s sprightly voice and animated stage presence elevated her songs to higher plane of expression. Japanese Breakfast were supported that night by Philadelphia’s Mothers and Rochester’s own Calicoco. Check out the photos below. Calicoco Mothers Japanese Breakfast

Alberto Alaska Debuts First Full Length Album, Possession

Alberto Alaska is a band with creative intention and control, and those qualities manifest themselves pretty apparently in both their recorded material and live performances. They don’t shy away from investing in their sound and there’s something laudable to be said of that. For roughly the past year and a half, the Rochester based quintet has plugged away in Buffalo’s own GCR Audio recording studio to perfect their first full length release, Possession. With distinct strains of 90’s era alt-rock woven in, the band’s signature heavy riffage style and soaring, ethereal vocals have made a bigger and better comeback on the new release. It tastefully mirrors bands like Circa Survive and Hrvrd but manages to maintain a feel of its own. The album itself is a true exemplification of the congruous relationship these guys have formed between purposeful art and unrelenting attention to sonic detail. Skillfully disembodied is the vibe[...]

buffaBLOG Rochester Showcase @ the Bug Jar (11/22/14)

A little over a week ago, the blog luckily escaped #snowvember to put on our first showcase in Rochester at the Bug Jar. On hand for the evening were three of the 585’s finest in the Absolutes, Buffalo Sex Change, and Harmonica Lewinski, in addition to Buffalo’s Mallwalkers and DJ Tight Mike. If you happened to miss the show, or are still a little fuzzy on the details, check out blog photographer Greg Jones‘ full gallery here.

Just Announced: buffaBLOG Rochester Showcase

After four years of throwing parties in various Buffalo venues, we were itching to branch out a bit and get out of town. So with the help of Rochester promoter/talent buyer/musician, Tim Avery, we are happy to announce our first show in the 585 at the Bug Jar this November. If you haven’t been to the venue, its kind of like Rochester’s Mohawk Place, hosting shows of some of the city’s best acts like Joywave, the Demos, and Kopps, while bringing in some fantastic touring bands. For our Rochester showcase, we reached out to some of our favorite Roch acts to help us out. Bug Jar regulars Harmonica Lewinski, Buffalo Sex Change, and the Absolutes (making their triumphant return) will cover the local talent for the evening. In addition, we couldn’t do a show without having Buffalo represented, so we are bringing our friends from Mallwalkers with to round out the night.[...]
