SLINKY X – Darn

SLINKY X’s Darn is a feelgood summer record if, for you, feeling good in the summer means waking up late and groggy on a Sunday, throwing on yesterday’s clothes, jumping in the car and stopping at the gas station on the way to a party because, while you didn’t have enough time in the morning to brush your teeth or shower, you have plenty of time to buy beer. In that moment, this is the disc you’d pop into your CD player (you’d be playing music off your phone, but you dropped it in a swamp last Tuesday and haven’t bothered to replace it). Darn is fuzzy garage-pop, with riffing guitars laying the base for matched-up male-female vocals that alternate between “ba-ba-bas” and cheeky lines like: “My brain feels like a slinky… always feel like I’m drinking/soda water from the sinky.” That line, from lead track and standout “slinky,” sets the[...]

Jack at Mohawk Place (3/1/18)

Singer-songwriter Brittany Costa, working under her creative moniker Jack, celebrated the release of her newest album, Alchemical Rounds (Sad Cactus Records), with a powerful and dynamic show at Mohawk Place on March 1st, in the midst of a sudden and violent winter storm. As a songwriter, Costa pulls no punches with her frank and unsparing depictions of emotional duality, the struggle between gut-wrenching despair and incandescent elation, and the music itself follows suit––sparse guitar chords giving way to gnarled waves of pummeling noise, with Costa’s resonant voice rising from a soft coo to an anguished scream. Local supporting acts that evening included lo-fi gutterpunks Saturn V, newly-minted punk quartet Slinky X, and baroque-pop favorites dreambeaches. Saturn V dreambeaches  Slinky X Jack

Tonight: Jack EP Release Party

Jack will be celebrating the release of their latest EP Alchemical Rounds with a shindig tonight at Mohawk Place with some help from Slinky X, dreambeaches, and Saturn V. The first two cuts from Alchemical Rounds, “Anxiety” and “A Kick A Knife” shows Jack expanding her punk/stoner rock into anthemic shoegaze territory, thrashing away beautifully with penetrating vocals and harmonies reminiscent of Jenny Lewis and Springtime Carnivore. Opening the show will be lo-fi punk skullcrushers Saturn V, the always wonderful dream pop of dreambeaches, and mysterious local punks Slinky X. Doors open at 8pm and cover is $10. Tonight: Hello Shark

Sometimes you just need an off-the-beaten-path, genre-defying show to cap off your weekend… If that’s the case, we know we’ll see you at Milkie’s tonight. Philly sad-boy Hello Shark will be jamming his literate, casio-driven poetry tonight alongside the literal caveman proto-punk of Boston’s The Cavemen. Local support is also aplenty, with applicable sets from vox & vibes duo Welks Mice, the ever-creative Lesionread Jazz Band, and a debut performance from Slinky X. Doors for tonight’s show are at 7pm. Bring $5 so you can get in the door.
