Orchid Mantis – “Dead Malls (ft. Cathedral Bells)”

Dreampop act Orchid Mantis returns with the hazy new track “Dead Malls.” Mantis, the moniker for Atlanta-based experimental musician Thomas Howard, has been cranking out lo-fi earworms since 2014. With the new single, Orchid Mantis combines creativity with Orlando bedroom-pop project, Cathedral Bells, on this collab. The track uses the metaphor of dead malls to parallel old memories and nostalgia which lands strong with these shoegaze elements. Fans of DIIV, Film School, with a touch of Future Islands rhythm section would be into this one. Check it out on Spotify and give Orchid Mantis a follow to keep up with their promising 2025. orchid mantis · Dead Malls (feat. Cathedral Bells)

Orchid Mantis – “I Could Live In Sleep”

Orchid Mantis is back with another dreamy bedroom-pop soundscape – we’d say they’ve accomplished their mission statement of combining pop songwriting with ambient field recording on this latest offering, “I Could Live In Sleep.” With a tight, neurotic beat propelling the song forward, “Sleep” pairs plucky guitars and introspective vocals with an intangible etherealness. It’s ghostly and sincere – two adjectives we can always stand behind. Orchid Mantis – “Can’t See The Sun Anymore”

Atlanta solo-act Orchid Mantis is back with more heartbreaking bedroom lo-fi jams with “Can’t See The Sun Anymore.” Guitar-based at heart, this one uses a heavily-filtered drum sound to add to its icy coldness to great effect. Full of washy reverb textures, warbly riffing, and layers of various drones, this would fit comfortably on a shelf next to Wild Nothing, DIIV, or even The Pains of Being Pure at Heart. Orchid Mantis’ latest release (upon which “Can’t See The Sun Anymore” resides), far from this world, is available on Bandcamp now. Orchid Mantis – “within and apart”

Experimental Atlanta act Orchid Mantis, the solo project of musician Thomas Howard, has followed up its ambient spring-released compositions on midi and tape with a slice of dream-pop that feels perfect for summer’s weary final weeks. Set to be included on a forthcoming release later this year, the fantastic “within and apart” is a languid track about breaking up and moving on. Dreamy undercurrents and jangly melodies add a sense of longing and nostalgia that fans of DIIV, Beach Fossils and Wild Nothing should eat right up. Keep an eye out for a proper LP by the year’s end, and in the mean time, stream “within and apart” below. orchid mantis · within and apart
