Air Devi – “mosquitos in the backyard”

Last time we checked in with Air Devi, we were digging the lighthearted chill-out vibes of “No Clearances.” The Philadelphia singer/songwriter is back again with another stunner, this time in the form of “mosquitos in the backyard.” Using chopped up samples as the backbone of this song (reminding us fondly of a shoegaze-y, late-00s era Minus the Bear), “mosquitos” injects a fascinating mathy vibe into its otherwise dream-pop nature. Check it out on Spotify or Bandcamp. Air Devi · mosquitos in the backyard

Gracie Gray – “alienlover”

Gracie Gray is an LA-based songwriter, singer, and performer whose latest single caught our ears for its spectral approach. “Alienlover” is her first release in almost two years – it’s a gentle, almost slacker-esque song that explores themes of separation with sparse guitar strumming, bedroom production value, and Gray’s soothing voice. Fans of Phoebe Bridgers, Mazzy Star, or Petal will enjoy this one thoroughly. Check out “alienlover” below – it’s also on Spotify. Gracie Gray · alienlover

Coucheron – “Can’t Stop”

Coucheron is no stranger to buffaBLOG – last time we checked in with him (Sebastian Kornelius Coucheron-Gautier Teigen to be specific), we were jamming hard to the EDM-flavored pulse of “Barely Floating.” “Can’t Stop” is our next recommendation… It’s a bedroom-disco banger with unbridled energy and colorful, upbeat vocals. Coucheron (who is only in his early 20s) has already had a few Grammy nods, chart placements, and yes, even a coveted nod from T. Swift herself. If that’s not reason enough to check out “Can’t Stop,” we’re not sure what is. Check it out below.

PRESSYES – “Lus U”

PRESSYES is the new project of Vienna-based musician Rene Mühlberger – we’re digging the psych-tinged electropop of his latest offering, “Lus U.” Full of vintage synth flavor, super-tight drums, and a dreamy vocal presence, “Lus” gives us big Tame Impala-meets-Unknown Mortal Orchestra vibes. Hypnotic and mesmerizing, we think this one is going to make its way onto your playlists. You can find “Lus U” on Soundcloud below, or on Spotify. PRESSYES · PRESSYES – Lus U

Shelter Boy – “Atmosphere”

There’s something hypnotic about “Atmosphere” from Shelter Boy (aka Simon Graupner)… There’s also something bratty and raucous. Something about the quasi-90s alterna-pop beat mixed with Graupner’s distinct sneer is just captivating. According to Shelter Boy, “Atmosphere” is “emotionally flexible: it is just as good on a rainy day when you don’t feel like going out as it is on a sunny day in the park.” Well said Simon! We really enjoyed this one and we think you will too – check out the video for “Atmosphere” below and be sure to add it to your Spotify playlist soon thereafter. A

Special Friend – “Ennemi Commun”

We’ve (I’ve) got a soft spot for fuzzed-out guitars. The latest single from Paris-based American/French duo Special Friend definitely nails that sound… And throws in a squiggly, vintage synth sound for good measure. Like the song’s title, “Ennemi Commun” (which means the opposite of Special Friend) is a toxic combo… A one-two punch that will tug on your heartstrings and hook you in for good. The dreamy vocal melodies are the KO. Enough boxing metaphors – fans of Sonic Youth and My Bloody Valentine are gonna dig this one a lot. Check out the video below and be sure to add it to your Spotify playlist too.

Tuskers – “A Friend To Babies”

We’re not 100% sure what to make of Tuskers… And that’s exactly why we’re so drawn to their latest song, “A Friend To Babies.” Don’t be fooled by the southern drawl, this one is full of heartfelt, borderline-nihilistic lyrics that tell both the devil and god to eff off. The juxtaposition of country-adjacent drawl overtop reverbed-out Pile/Pavement-esque slacker rock is something we’ve never heard before… And we think you’re gonna like it too. Check it out via YouTube below – you can also find it on Spotify.

spill tab – “PISTOLWHIP”

Last time we checked in with LA-based act spill tab, we were pretty jazzed on their single “name.” We just couldn’t stay away… This time, we’ve fallen for “PISTOLWHIP” – a quiet/loud amalgamation of electronica beats, synth splashes, and a noise-rock influenced chorus.  Just like “name,” this one comes and goes before you know it at just over two (2) minutes in length, but we think the brevity suits the song, have a listen for yourself. Make sure to watch the dirt bike antics of the “PISTOLWHIP” music video below, but after that, swing by Spotify and add this one to your playlist.

Kidä – “The Garden”

The very-worldly Kidä is an Italian-Egyptian born in New York and based in London – we’ve been loving her latest jam, “The Garden.” Featuring a monochrome video (that reminds us a lot of 90s aesthetic (in a good way)), “Garden” is made-for-the-dancefloor indietronica at its finest. Kidä’s voice is fantastic and lays overtop the dark, driving beat perfectly. With a resume that also includes original compositions for the fashion world, she’s a fiercely independent multi-genre artist that’s absolutely worth checking out. Check out the video for “The Garden” below – you can also find her music on Spotify.

Evalyn – “Sun In Your Eyes”

Evalyn here with the ethereal indie pop of “Sun In Your Eyes.” Based in Topanga Canyon, CA, Evalyn has been crafting effortlessly delicate electronic-tinged pop like her debut EP, Sandcastle and Salvation, which has to-date racked up over 19 million streams. We think “Eyes” continues that trend of very listenable indie-pop – it’s got a subtle-but-driving beat, airy vocals, and just enough pop sentiment to get you hooked. Check out the video below – you can also find Evalyn on Spotify.

PACKS – “Silvertongue”

Toronto’s PACKS blasted their way into our inbox with the raucous garage rock fervor of “Silvertongue.” Boasting a true DIY tone and jangly indie rock guitars, “Silvertongue” sounds like the middle child of Bully, Hole, and Courtney Barnett. There’s a slacker rock ethos here that shines through, brilliantly emphasized by the wanderlust vibes of the accompanying music video – check it out below. You can find “Silvertongue” on Spotify, Bandcamp, and Apple Music. Take The Cake (which houses “Silvertongue) will be available in full on May 21, 2021.

Adult Books – “Grecian Urn”

LA-based trio Adult Books are here with the synth-tinged post-punk of “Grecian Urn.” Bringing to mind a subtle Ceremony or a darker, gauzier indie-r Interpol, “Urn” pairs sparkling guitar work with splashes of synth and a driving bass backbone. If you like what you hear, “Grecian Urn” is the title-track of an LP that comes out on March 26, 2021. Check it out on Bandcamp.

Nisa – “Turn Me Down”

Nisa here with a stunning animated video for “Turn Me Down.” This NYC-based indie rocker pairs psychedelic visuals with her guitar-driven indie rocker… It’s full of contemporary 2021 energy topped off by Nisa’s ethereal vocal presence. This one must be seen to be truly appreciated – check out the YouTube video below and if you really like it, swing by Bandcamp to pick it up there.

Annie DiRusso – “Nine Months”

Loving this crunchy-but-beautiful jam from Nashville/NYC-based indie rocker Annie DiRusso. “Nine Months” finds DiRusso bearing her heart on her sleeve with a batch of powerful and cathartic lyrics, flexing her powerful-but-relatable vocals overtop 90s-flavored indie rock guitars. Fans of Soccer Mommy, Diet Cig, and Phoebe Bridgers are gonna dig this one a lot – check it out below or add it to your Spotify playlist.

Colour Tongues – “Wasted”

Colour Tongues here with the colorful indie-pop of “Wasted.” Inspired to take up the art of songwriting by Transatlanticism by Death Cab for Cutie, “Wasted” embodies a bunch of mid-aughts era songwriting. Sensitive vibes, swimmy reverb-drenched guitars, and heartfelt vocals with a Gibbard-esque drawl. That’s not to say Colour Tongues is a DCFC clone – there’s a very pleasant swung beat here and a sparkly, contemporary mix that’s all their own. We think you’ll like this one too – check it out below or on Spotify if that’s more your thing. Colour Tongues · Wasted
