Tonight: Giant Peach

Self-proclaimed diarycore/wraithcore act Giant Peach will be hitting up Mohawk Place today. The trio has just released But You Made Me Such A Beautiful Thing, a sprawling, sonic evolution for the Brooklyn act, who have traded out their raw indie-punk sound for something more subtle – think Rainer Maria or Hop Along. Joining them are noisy Montreal janglers DBPS, and a stacked local lineup featuring Slow Cooker and Slinky X. Tonight’s show is at Mohawk Place at 8pm. Make sure you have at least $8 for admission, but come with a few extra bucks to buy something from the bands. But You Made Me Such A Beautiful Thing by Giant Peach

Tonight: Ugly Sun

Show up to Mohawk Place in downtown Buffalo tonight for an electrifying grassroots rock and roll show that’s sure to blow out both the speakers and your eardrums. Headlining, and celebrating a 2-year anniversary, is Buffalo’s Ugly Sun. This thrilling trio plays an intoxicating form of raw indie rock that’s wrought with emotion and isn’t afraid to venture outside the grimy garage and into a vibrant garden. It’s a dynamic sound you can feel and, best of all, will jumpstart your heart rate like a bolt of lightning. All of Mohawk is going to be singing and rocking along to this performance so get into it. Philly lo-fi four-piece, Qwark, will also be taking the stage with their delightful and deafening super rock records in tow. Seriously, these guys are loud as hell and could shatter a nerd’s lenses with the stroke of a single chord. Fun and rambunctious, Qwark[...]

Tonight: Robert Earl Thomas

Tonight chilled out and trippy indie folk rocker Robert Earl Thomas rolls through Mohawk Place with boffo opening support from local wunderkind Jacob Peter and Oats Holy Roller. Taking a break from psychedelic dream pop band Widowspeak, Robert Earl Thomas released his debut LP Another Age in February, a tight collection of woozy and slightly glammy 70’s AM gold American pop that’s groovy, real easy on the ear, and probably ideal for cooling it down on a hot and steamy summer night. Meanwhile, the virtuoso Jacob Peter, who is seemingly everywhere in the best way possible, will be there too, a good thing if you’re down with good music; and be sure to get there early for Oats Holy Roller, who will bare his soul and metaphorically set your hair on fire with only his voice and an acoustic guitar. Doors are at 7pm and cover is $5. Another Age by[...]

Tonight: Deadwolf

Tonight the Mohawk hosts a killer lineup of Buffalo bands headlined by Deadwolf and bringing together genres, scenes, and party people for an excellent late show with Medusa, The Sofa Kingz and Space Cubs. Local Infringing garage rockers The Sofa Kingz and dark electronic pop confectioner Medusa get the night going, with doors opening at 10pm and a cover of $6. Heavy Heart by Deadwolf

Sunflower Bean at Mohawk Place (5/6/18)

New York indie-rock trio Sunflower Bean blew the roof off Mohawk Place on Sunday, May 6th, marking their return to the Queen City since opening for Best Coast at The Tralf Music Hall two years ago. With indelible pop hooks, Fleetwood Mac harmonies, Mick Ronson riffs, and a bit of Johnny Marr’s jangle, Sunflower Bean played with confidence and charisma, invigorating the songs from their newest album, Twentytwo In Blue (Mom & Pop). The band even gave a shout-out to Buffalo’s own rock photographer extraordinaire Andy DeLuca, their friend and creative collaborator. Sunflower Bean were supported by feisty London punks Dream Wife and local psychedelic shamans Deadwolf. Deadwolf Dream Wife Sunflower Bean

Teenager-Buffalo-Mohawk Place

Tonight: Teenanger

Tonight Mohawk Place is hosting a night of punk throwdowns. Stopping in from Toronto are punk heavyweights Teenanger. Teenanger are a four-piece whose music ranges from Toronto hardcore punk to a more plaintive and toned down post-punk. Their last LP, Teenager echoes the post-punk vibes of Joy Division while still staying true to the stripped down and energetic chaos of Teenanger’s previous outings. They’re fun, there are synths, and you don’t want to miss them. Joining Teenanger tonight will be Hot Tip, who always bring it when they’re on stage. Hot Tip have a new demo tape out that’s a small sneak peek at what they’ve got coming for their 2nd LP.  Also performing will be Saturn V, who are past members of Mapmaker, Cross Stitch, and Basement Rat. Show at 8pm and bring $5 for the door.

Tonight: Made Violent

You hear a lot of talk these days about rock being dead. It’s a very fashionable thing to say, based on “diminished market share” or the lineup and crowd sizes at Coachella, but at the local and underground level we know better. Yes it’s true that the local scene isn’t particularly well supported by Western New York beyond the wonderful music fans that do, in part because some rock fans are sitting home complaining about rock being dead, but the fact remains that rock is very much alive, and tonight it’s going to be at the Mohawk when hometown heroes Made Violent bring it all back with some help from local skull crushers Ugly Sun and Philadelphia indie rockers Cold Fronts. Combining propulsive garage rock with Tweedyesque vocals and strong melodies, Cold Fronts feel like they’re actually a band on a big label worth a damn. Discovered by the justifiably legendary impresario Seymour Stein,[...]

Tonight: Basic Printer

Two of Buffalo’s best bands are hosting a fantastic show tonight, featuring a set from experimental Nashville synth-poppers Basic Printer. Buffalo’s indie-rock-for-indie-rockers outfit dreambeaches will bring their impressive brand of baroque-pop… Synth masterminds Humble Braggers are also playing, and they always bring it home with their unique brand of irresistibly hooky synth-pop. Tonight’s show is at Mohawk Place and it starts at 7pm. Bring $7 for admission. Good Weird ft. Del Florida by Basic Printer

Tonight: The Cordial Sins

Columbus, Ohio shoegazers The Cordial Sins pass through Mohawk Place tonight to rock indie jams that will tickle the fancies of fans of early Radiohead and Memoryhouse. Cordial Sins frontwoman/lyricist Liz Fisher is unmistakably the real deal, with a potent yet delicate voice  that’s got range and beguiling sweetness, while lead guitarist Corey Dickerson’s spirit animal is clearly Jonny Greenwood (a good thing). Opening the show will be local haze quartet Coral Collapse and psychedelic accordion rockers Church Key Social (think of Ian Anderson by way of the Doors). Doors open at 8pm and cover is $5.

Jack at Mohawk Place (3/1/18)

Singer-songwriter Brittany Costa, working under her creative moniker Jack, celebrated the release of her newest album, Alchemical Rounds (Sad Cactus Records), with a powerful and dynamic show at Mohawk Place on March 1st, in the midst of a sudden and violent winter storm. As a songwriter, Costa pulls no punches with her frank and unsparing depictions of emotional duality, the struggle between gut-wrenching despair and incandescent elation, and the music itself follows suit––sparse guitar chords giving way to gnarled waves of pummeling noise, with Costa’s resonant voice rising from a soft coo to an anguished scream. Local supporting acts that evening included lo-fi gutterpunks Saturn V, newly-minted punk quartet Slinky X, and baroque-pop favorites dreambeaches. Saturn V dreambeaches  Slinky X Jack

Tonight: Cavalcade

Long-running Rochester act Cavalcade will be trekking through the snow tonight to play a fervent set at Mohawk Place… Their music transcends genre, but falls somewhere between prog rock and psychedelic indie rock, with special attention payed to pop songwriting. Joining Cavalcade tonight are psych-rockers Moody Cosmos (who are returning after a lengthy absence), and the grungy punk trio of Major Arcana. Tonight’s show is located at Mohawk Place and starts at 8:00pm. Bring $5 for admission. The Switch by Cavalcade
