Tonight: A Hotel Nourishing EP Release Show

After a dark, seven-year hiatus, A Hotel Nourishing (Sonny Baker and Cam Rogers) returns tonight to release some new music, the deeply textured and haunting Empty Gesture EP. The band will be taking the stage at the recently re-opened Mohawk Place, so get ready for a healthy dose of 2007-esque nostalgia. Joining AHN are Aircraft, Mr. Boneless, and Red Heat (their first show!). Doors open this evening at 8pm while music kicks off around 9pm. $5 cover.

Tonight: Ark Life

Buffalo will get a dose of Colorado tonight as Ark Life makes it’s way through town, breathing magic into the newly reopened Mohawk Place with their soul-steeped take on folk-rock. This is a band that hit the ground running—they’ve been together little over year, with one record under their belts and nearly 200 shows in their pockets. They’ve shared bills with the likes of Shakey Graves, of Montreal, Barcelona and Warpaint, and have a string of shows with Dispatch and State Radio guitarist Chadwick Stokes coming up in early November. Their summer tour dates now blending into fall, this quintet will bring their stories with them, soaked in the harmonies and passion that have led them down such a thunderous road of early success. Joining them will be Buffalo romantic-folkies Tiny Rhymes. 8pm start. $5 gets you a couple ears full of beautiful tunes.

Just Announced: Diarrhea Planet

Raucous Nashville sextet, Diarrhea Planet, will be taking over the newly re-opened Mohawk Place on a usually sedated Monday, next month on October 27th. Currently on tour with Jeff the Brotherhood (although not at the Buffalo gig), DP was getting some serious buzz last year following the release of its debut album, I’m Rich Beyond Your Wildest Dreams. The less than appetizing band name certainly didn’t hurt either. Tickets should go on sale very soon, so keep your eyes pealed.

Tonight: Ava Luna

As you should know by now, Mohawk Place officially reopened its doors last week with a three night, grand reopening weekend that saw bands from the venue’s past and, until it closed up shop in early 2013, present return to start a new era of live music at the downtown stomping ground. While I haven’t been back since they reopened, I heard that the woman’s bathroom already successfully flooded, so some things never change… Anyways, tonight is as good of a night as any to make a return stop as Brooklyn’s Ava Luna will be hitting the stage. The band is new-era hipster soul, combining elements of doo-wop and the DIY spirit. Fans of the Talking Heads, Dirty Projectors, and Mayer Hawthorne would gladly get down to Ava Luna. Supporting Ava Luna this evening is the shimmering pysch pop of Celestial Shore and local indie act Mink, which features past members of[...]

Tonight: A Celebration of Pete Perrone

For the Buffalo music scene he was a key player; a fatherly figure who helped support a generation of bands simply by opening his doors and giving us weirdos an opportunity to be weird. In doing so he transformed an aging, somewhat dilapitated building into a musical mecca. Who would have thought that an aging Italian opening a small bar on the outskirts of downtown would play such a huge role in all of our lives? But that’s who Pete Perrone was, and for those who remember him those memories are only of the fond variety. I could launch into a huge diatribe about how Pete affected me personally and musically, but I’ll save that for another time (perhaps tonight?). In celebration of the man we all came to love, Town Ballroom will be hosting a remembrance tonight ($5 advance, 7pm) with music, words, and images. Many of the local[...]
