Ricky Lake and Tommy with the Tool – “Trigenco – (Outro)”

Paradoxes fascinate Bay Area-s based artist Ricky Lake. The experimental rapper’s found inspiration in duality; the mixture of oil and water. His latest track, “Trigenco,”  fuses alty bedroom pop production with freestyle rap delivery. The dreamy, jaunty, molasses guitar loops meet a clever contrast in Ricky and Tommy’s conversational delivery. “Trigenco” explores the sensation of loving something that’s left you. “Do you even need me? … Feel like I fell in love with a ghost town.” The back half of the track really explores the swirling layers production, as the lines get more repetitive and the sentiment settles in. Barz Banga – “Crack Era”

You can almost hear the latest single from Buffalo rapper Barz Banga the moment you get eyes on the cover art. Bills-era Marshawn Lynch, branded with “Beast Mode” text down by his galloping cleats greets you as the most powerful horns you’ve ever heard trot out to kick off the beat. “Crack Era,” the new single from the Brooklyn-born, Buffalo-bred artist is appropriately declarative, boldly announcing a fearlessness that stems from when and where Barz grew up. Perfectly timed for windows-down weather, “Crack Era” is punctuated with booming bass – your neighbors might get transported to 2009 when they hear you coming. Rashad + Confidence – “Non Stop”

You gotta hear the timeless instrumental longtime beatmaker Confidence has cooked up for his collab with Rashad. “Non Stop” sounds like it came straight off a Gang Starr record. Confidence is in his bag, chopping up delicious piano lines, rearranging them into a head-knocking production prime for a veteran emcee like Rashad to find inspiration within. It even includes some scratching to add texture to an extra smooth selection of instruments. If there was any doubt about the quality of the artists involved, Rashad takes care of that with his lyricism. “Non Stop” is a braggadocious reminder of what traditional hip hop is supposed to sound like. Rochester rapper Phenomeinal channels his spirituality and desire for greater self into his tracks. Phenomeinal’s relationship with Jesus stands as a driving force, and he makes that clear in the opening lines of “Growth,” where scripture brings him solitude. His latest release explores how faith, ambition, and resolve coalesce into the drive that’s carried him to success despite the challenges that lurk around every corner. While it’s faith-forward, “Growth” isn’t lacking for bars. Phenomeinal effortless shifts into new lines, carrying over rhyme schemes and assonance line-to-line with clever phrasing and sounds. The track’s lofty subject matter is matched by fluttering flute and a grounding bottom half. Its percussion shouldn’t be discounted too. Give this a listen and add it to your rotation. southpaw + Dope TAF – “Book of Genesis”

Hinted by their name, rising Bay Area hip hop producer southpaw brings power from unexpected angles on their latest single “Book of Genesis.” Classic boom bap drums set the tone, but the haunting “Joanna” vocal sample and whimpering saxophone pack the hardest punch on southpaw’s board. The track gets an assist from rapper Dope TAF, who counters the melancholic production with a bit of gusto, asserting his status in the scene. As a complete package, “Book of Genesis” offers the levity of hip hop bravado with the anchoring southpaw production, making for a really well-rounded listen. Add this one to your boom bap playlists. Rising band 2ŁØT is forging a new sound that they’ve labeled “electronic jam music” or EJM. Their latest single, “Tread” jams the hypnotic rhythms that you’d usually hear in those more free-flowing and long-form tracks into a tight two minutes. It brings the jam to the study beats structure. New York hip hop artists Jay Dutch and BiiG Dreams embrace temptation even if it’s just for the night, on their sharp new track “the night before we repent.” There’s something to be said about living in the moment. Dutch and Dreams explore why this happens, whether it’s romantic partners, substances or other vices. Sharp lines assess what succumbing to those feelings means, and whether or not this impacts good graces later on. “I see a bit of heaven outside of my window.” Production-wise, we’re super smooth to match the polished delivery of both artists, and there’s a great little vibe shift for the back half of the track. Already Legends – “Up the Smooth Water”

Our Great Lakes compadres over in Detroit are cooking up something smooth and fierce with this hip hop collective Already Legends.  The group, made up of SavageSpitFlames, Sam Tate, Squad and L.O.E Boog, bring a eclectic mix of styles that round out to feel very Detroit. Their latest single, “Up the Smooth Water” is a great barometer for the sound over there, and it’s exciting to see shine getting brighter for a legendary city for hip hop. The first thing you’ll notice about this track is it’s appropriately smooth, and the sample is front and center. A lot of Detroit and Rust Belt rappers in general have a conversational flow, with lines very casually moving into the next, and I love that about this track. COLO – “9to5”

Rising rapper COLO has a slick pen for singles and his latest, “9to5” is a perfect addition to your playlist as the temperature clears up. This track is an ode to earning the paycheck. “9to5” has a summery, light hook that takes you right back to the blog era of rap. The production is silky smooth, and COLO’s delivery is the perfect match. Lyrically, COLO finds his sanctity in his time away from the grind. What’s life without living? Showrocka, Fuego Base and Chi Sees – “We Don’t Care”

New Haven emcee Showrocka returns to the buffaBLOG pages with his latest collaborative effort, this time with a couple more of New England’s finest. “We Don’t Care” is anchored by Showrocka, who handles hook duties in addition to having one of the three verses. Chi Sees and Fuego Base are the other recruits to this track – Chi’s charismatic delivery counters the droning vocal sample to provide a perfect balance, and Fuego’s fiery, gritty delivery snaps your ears to attention. “We Don’t Care’s” chorus turns the song’s namesake into a motto – anyone can catch this trio’s indifference to struggle stories. Not a lot of sympathy going around for rappers who saw the worst of it and came out the other side. The dark wizards of up and coming rap group Green Enkd Society find a home between the mystic and the grounded, and it’s on prime display in their latest single, “F THEM IF THEY DON’T F WITH US.” The track’s witchy tone is set immediately upon the beat drop, with midnight howls and a piano scale that goes on just a bit too long to itch your ear. Grand Wizzard MC and Jay Will snap the track to something a little bit more of this world, He speak to his bewitching of life’s big bootied temptresses, coalescing ideas in a really creative way. Yung Luscious ft. Jayaire Woods – “Caruso”

We’re headed back to 2009 with this latest track from up-and-coming rapper Yung Luscious. “Caruso,” the hustling, off-guard-inspired track features a flow that feels like it was stolen off of peak Rick Ross’s hard drive. The beat is built around a delicious little chipmunk soul sample, expertly looped for maximum head-bobbing efficiency. Luscious’s baritone delivery shouldn’t be mistaken for nonchalance. Adetola – “NEW SWAG ORDER”

Tallahassee-based rapper and singer Adetola continues her run of anthemic releases with her latest single, “NEW SWAG ORDER.” Distorted, glitchy bass floods your bones while a tiny little melody meets between your ears, making “SWAG” a full-body listening experience. Fittingly, Adetola’s vocals are swagger-filled and chalant-lacking, revelling in her position as the coolest possible person to be handling this beat. Her lyrics call back to the late 2000s hip hop scene — referencing no ceilings, coups, and swag of course — while her delivery and production are distinctly of the moment. Adetola first graced our pages with 2025’s “OHKAYE,” another high-energy track geared for a sleazy, sweaty after-hours party. Lynx Cane – “mistletoe”

Do you remember your first love? Raw, innocent, and as real as anything you’d every experienced. South East London producer and rapper Lynx Cane recaptures that emotion, and blends in a little bit of slowcore for his latest track, “mistletoe” “Our love was mystical. but you miss those lips on the mistletoe.” Lync channels a sullen, spacey beat into his lyrics. Over a tight 1:45 track, Lynx recaptures the emotion of first love. No matter how that ended in reality, there was a devastation to its closure. Playing producer too, Lynx develops an emotive undercurrent to accompany his lyrics. Wandering guitar notes pair with a driving beat, as Lynx attempts to recapture the a moment in time. JIRI – “ClockWork”

Raleigh-based emcee JIRI emphasizes substance and skill with each of his releases. In his latest track, “ClockWork, ” JIRI makes it clear he’s a different cat. It has all the markings of a single – earworm beat with a tasty looping melody, rapidly evolving sing-songy flows and a chorus that can get stuck in your head on initial listens. JIRI sets himself apart with the skillful storytelling he’s able to weave into a song this accessible. “ClockWork’s” narrative tells the story of a lady who falls for JIRI’s inevitable charm — or does she have different, more sinister intentions?
