Tonight: Yazan

Modern-day Frank Zappa, Yazan, takes his talents to Buffalo favorite, Electric Avenue, tonight for the latest stop on his very first kick-ass, cross-country tour. Hailing from Brooklyn, NY, Yazan is a singer-songwriter-guitarist who specializes in an exceptional mixture of blues, folk and psychedelic grooves. Riding high off the release of his new album, Hahaha, he’ll be flanked by drummer, Nick Dooley (Flagland), and bassist, Sam Gehrke (Soul Low), to give your Friday night an auditory kick in the pants. Also taking the stage is Jack, the solo songwriting project of former Brooklynite-turned-Buffalonian and singer-songwriter, Brittany Costa.  Rounding out the night are Buffalo’s slowcore three-piece, Award Show, and the folksy Andrew Kothen (Dreambeaches). Tonight: Witty Tarbox Release Show

Do you like clowns, cotton candy and indie grooves? Well lucky for you, Witty Tarbox is turning Buffalo’s Nietzsche’s into a big top tonight for the release of their debut studio EP, The Adventures of Schmitty: Issue #1 v RARE. Hailing from Buffalo, Witty Tarbox stands out by taking a cooler, more laidback approach to their sound, blending the blues with all kinds of rock, from indie to surf, resulting in some seriously funky jams. This is one of those bands where the music is sweetened by the performance so don’t miss ‘em. Helping out with the festivities and wrangling the elephants are the vintage tinged three-piece, Handsome Jack, and groove rockers, Mosswalk. Doors at 9pm, $5 cover. 21 and over. Show up early because the first 25 people get a free hard copy of the EP.

River Whyless – “Born in the Right Country”

North Carolina folk four-piece, River Whyless, stop by with the topical first single off their upcoming album, Kindness, A Rebel. Featuring a lighthearted folk-rock beat with spirited vocals, “Born in the Right Country” is a track about class division and the struggles of chasing the American Dream that everyone can relate to. Take a break from the rat race and kick back with this thought-provoking listen below. Kindness, A Rebel is out June 8th and available for pre-order here. Favor – “Chocolate Cheekbone”

Copenhagen’s very own, Favor, brings us the epileptic visuals for his brand new neon-pop track “Chocolate Cheekbone.” Inspired by 80’s dance hits, this throwback tune features infectious sing-a-long vocals and sugar high synths straight out of a club filled with bad haircuts and bad fashion. Desert Liminal – “Kate Has”

Chicago’s synth and drum duo, Desert Liminal, make us lonely with their gloomy new minimalist dark wave single, “Kate Has.” Singer/keyboardist Sarah Jane Quillin’s moody, resonant vocals sprawl over Rob Logan’s anxious drums and down-in-the-dumps ambient tones that rumble the bones. This woeful track will hit you right in the feels, but it’s beautiful and well worth the listen. Pop a Xanax and check it out below. Winter – “Zoey”

If you’ve ever wondered what it would sound like if David Lynch produced a pop song, look no further than “Zoey,” the latest starry-eyed single from LA dream pop four-piece, Winter. This blissfully hazy track off their latest album, Ethereality, features lullaby vocals floating over a shoegaze beat of celestial riffs and wistful percussions. I Know The Chief – “Saudade”

Melbourne, Australia’s I Know the Chief boogies down with the new recording of their live favorite, “Saudade,” like a chrome-dipped John Travolta in “Saturday Night Fever.” This pastel and palm trees disco track features fuzzy vocals, handclap drum machines and phantasmic synths out the wazoo. Francis – “All I Want”

Swedish indie veterans, Francis, resurface and drop off their enchantingly atmospheric new single, “All I Want.” Their latest pop track features singer Petra Mases’ gentle and compelling vocals leading the sounds of rhythmic riffs, lucid keys and punchy percussions like a fresh stream running through a lush, tranquil forest. Morning Wars – “Runaway”

Syracuse four-piece, Morning Wars, is back with the new single, “Runaway,” a raucous alt-rock track that will leave you chasing streetcars and adventure. After forming in 2016 in the dorms of Syracuse University, Morning Wars developed their distinct sound by peppering alternative melodies with surfer and psych rock sensibilities. The results, as heard in their latest release, play to the curiosity of open horizons, especially with founder and vocalist Marc Ramos’ grandiose voice egging you on. Rochester producer YLXR tag teams with Teflon Sega, an up-and-coming crooner in the fast lane, for the sensual electro-R&B track, “Closure.” Sega’s talents truly shine as he wallows in YLXR’s lonely, cloud surfing production with a serenading voice that’s vulnerable and emotionally striking, making for a heartbreaking listen you won’t get tired of hearing. Hawker M. James Releases New Single & Video, “Falling Out,” Off Upcoming Album

Hawker M. James, pseudonym of Mike James (formerly of Longwave and The Demos), brings us his emotional first single and video for the song, “Falling Out,” off his upcoming album, The Cool Wind. The Rochester songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer reflects on the devotion to one’s craft and sacrifices made in pursuit of dreams on this gentle, contemplative folk ballad. Evocative and thoughtful, the track is comprised of soothing acoustic strings and touching piano keys wrapped up in James’ warm and cozy vocals. If you’re looking to scratch your indie rock itch tonight, look no further than Milkie’s on Elmwood where femme-fronted four-piece, Hate Club, are performing along with additional friends and local favorites. Hailing from Albany, Hate Club founded in 2016 and dropped their debut EP, No, Seriously, showcasing a slacker, basement rock sound that’s wrought with angst and heartache.
