Tonight: Jeffrey Lewis & Los Bolts

Tonight NYC anti-folk punk poet laureate Jeffrey Lewis and his band Los Bolts will be headlining an excellent lineup at beloved DIY space Sugar City featuring Welks Mice, Hop Hop, and Derick Evans and the Dream Beam Magic Team. A noted writer, graphic artist, and quasi spiritual heir to downtown intellectual singer songwriter luminaries  like Lou Reed and Jarvis Cocker, Lewis has been banging out his poetic underground lo-fi indie rock for more than twenty years, most of them on the legendary Rough Trade label, and tonight’s show at Sugar City will be intimate and sweet. Opening this early show will be the ever delightful literal good vibes of Welks Mice, Buffalo hip hop all-star Hop Hop, and deep dive existential performance art outfit Derick Evans and the Dream Beam Magic Team. Doors are at 6:30pm so plan accordingly and cover is $10.

Tonight: Jeffrey Lewis & Los Bolts

Tonight, NYC folk punk outfit Jeffrey Lewis & Los Bolts headline a top lineup over at Sugar City with Multibird, Jack Toft and Little Cake. Taking a garage/punk rock sledgehammer to austere folk music tropes, Jeffrey Lewis finds new epic territory to mine live, while Multibird, a new act from Rochester’s Seth Faergolzia takes apart the folk music form from the inside. Ana (Radarada) Vafai’s band Little Cake and local hip hop hero Jack Toft. Cover is $10, doors open at 7pm and the show starts at 7:30pm to beat the 10pm curfew.

Tonight: Jeffrey Lewis & the Jrams

Tonight, make a mini-road-trip to Boiler 54 in Medina to catch Jeffrey Lewis and the Jrams, with openers, freak-folk collective from Rochester, Seth Faergolzia and the 23 Psaegz. I absolutely love Jeffrey Lewis. He is a nerdy comic book hero who has mastered the art of grumblesome talk-singing. Lewis never fails to whip out the best analogies and jokes about anxiety, art, and the human condition—with tongue always in cheek, while still being a very serious sort of folk punk. You might recognize him from his covers of Crass songs, in which he turned the driving line (affected accent) “Banned from the Roxy… OKAY” into an acoustic romp. Or maybe from him waxing poetic about being a “Cult Boyfriend,” or how wonderful it’d really be to get accosted by Bonnie Prince Billy. Come out for a contemplative, cartoony, fun and folksy time. The show is at Boiler 54 (115 W[...]

Just Announced: Jeffrey Lewis

Kind of a slow day here in Buffalo so it may be worth noting that the up and coming Medina venue, Boiler 54, just booked a pretty cool act that should be on your radar. Jeffrey Lewis, the wordy folk-punk pocket philosopher, will be playing the venue on Wednesday, October 22nd. Lewis will be joined at Boiler 54 by his backing band, the Jrams. Tickets are currently available for $10 for the all ages show. Doors are at 7pm. Rochester’s freak-folk collective, Seth Faergolzia and the 23 Psaegz, are set to open. Leave right after work so you have some time to grab some pre-show tacos while you are at it.
