Gillian – “Who Are You?”

It’s been a minute since we’ve heard from Gillian – the funky indie-poppers have swung through Buffalo a few times on their travels. They’re back with another effortlessly-cool (and startlingly unique) take on indie rock with “Who Are You?” There’s a definite funk-based swing to this song, full of twisting and turning guitar parts; lush and layered vocals; and a distinct attitude that really brings the song to life. On “Who Are You?,” the band encourages people to learn a little bit more about their neighbor… In doing so, maybe it would lead to more outcomes rather than outrage. Check out the song via YouTube below – you can find an exhaustive list of how to listen to their new album, Put It Back Together (on which “Who Are You?” resides), by using this link.

Tonight: Gillian

In elementary school, I had this friend named Gillian (spelled the same way). She was a fearless girl careful coordinate every outfit, had every hair on her head neatly trimmed, was clear and concise, but was also totally unafraid to throw down on the monkey bars, make up  Britney Spears songs by herself at recess and live in an eccentric bubble of her own. All of this comes to mind because it seems to be an adaptive description for Gillian the band (hear me out on this one). The quintet has a sound that’s super cohesive and well thought out, but entirely daring at the same time. It’s a cool fusion between 70’s disco and 80’s power rock, all housed under an undeniably catchy umbrella of indie dance pop. The alternating male/female vocals add a fresh and sonically pleasing dimension to it all. The New York City band recently released[...]

Gillian – “Out & Out”

Over the weekend, we received an e-mail from Brooklyn-based indie-pop quintet, Gillian. Fronted by former Rochester resident, Geoff Bennington, Gillian is almost the total package, a polished sound with incredibly catchy, developed melodies that fans of Broken Social Scene, Sheer Mags, Los Campesinos!, or The Cast of Cheers would love. The band has two shows in Rochester this winter, with the first being Sunday, December 7th at the Bug Jar. The second is January 23rd with two bands we’ve been talking about this week, Bryan Johnson & Family and Talking Under Water. Don’t just listen to “Out & Out.” The whole EP, The Eyes In My Head, is phenomenal.
