Extra Space – Green Season

Extra Space is one of those literal and figurative band names – the Brooklyn-based duo of Joey Puleio and Chris Kyle got together to de-clutter and re-situate their shared practice space. Lo and behold, when two musicians get together in a room with common goal, you can expect a little more than generic cleaning to get done. The two songwriters developed a unique chemistry and their friendship and musicianship both grew significantly over time. We’re now blessed with their debut album, Green Season, a seven-song offering informed by twinkly Midwest emo meanderings and the sighing steel guitars found in twangy folk music. “Puddles” kicks off Green Season with a splash of heart-on-your-sleeve acoustic energy. Immediately, nimbly-picked guitar work rings out, backed by a vocal take laden with gentle vibrato. “Puddles” (and much of the rest of the album) brings to mind the work of Mike Kinsella, specifically Owen, matching ultra-descriptive lyrics[...]

Extra Space – “Cig”

“Cig” is the newest from Extra Space, a band we’ve covered previously here, and we’re pretty happy with it at the blog. Can’t say I agree with the order – releasing “Cig” after “Toothpaste” (one would think you’d want toothpaste after a cigarette, but that’s just me). but “Cig” sees Joey Puleio and Chris Kyle keeping it mellow and measured with a little less of the folksy twang heard on “Toothpaste.” The drums and guitar are tightly wound but stay at a simmer with some funky time signatures to give the vocals room to breathe. Color me impressed with the perfect balance between simplicity and technical skill; the layering and mastering is impeccably done and after a few listens I’ve heard a new sound each time. Fans of Big Thief, Kurt Vile, or Real Estate would find a lot to enjoy here. You can hear “Cig” over on Spotify or[...]

Extra Space – “Toothpaste”

Brooklyn based duo Extra Space brings us their latest with “Toothpaste.” Made up of Joey Puleio and Chris Kyle, who started playing together in 2023, they’ve been working toward an as-yet-to-be-released album Green Season. “Toothpaste”  is a fun, meandering piece that leans toward sparkly indie folk territory with hints of math rock twinkling sprinkled throughout. Country-adjacent guitars guide us through the brunt here, with the vocals sounding distinctly Oberst-esque – certainly not a terrible comparison. I couldn’t find much else on Extra Space, but definitely keep your eyes peeled. Folksy indie is definitely in vogue lately, but based on what I’ve heard so far, these guys seem to know what they’re doing musically and could certainly go the distance. In the meantime check out the twangy “Toothpaste” (and “Pace”) over on Soundcloud or Spotify.
