Elle Belle – “Train to Kyoto”

Written in an entirely surprising location, Elle Belle put together his latest single, “Train to Kyoto” in the last place you’d expect. That’s right – on a train to Kyoto. Can you believe it? Us either.   That being said, the gentle electronica here is top notch, with a spicy, lightly-autotuned vocal presence. The composition is purposely bare in nature and the song breathes with both digital and organic lungs. Pleasant guitar plunks, gauzy synths, and project mastermind Christopher Pappas’ airy vocals are all highlights – here’s a little more (quite profound) diatribe about the song from Pappas himself:   “There’s no easy way to explain this song without sounding like a self-righteous a-hole, so apologies in advance. Or maybe you’ll relate? Do you ever feel like you’re at the party at the end of the world, putting coasters under drinks? Do you think ‘separating the art from the artist’ is[...]

Elle Belle – “Saturday”

Elle Belle is one of many projects on front man Christopher Pappas’ plate, including but not limited to: making music for Nasa, a musical, and a couple TV pilots in pre-production. “Saturday” is the second single released in anticipation of his newest album How Do I Feel, out September 1 from Little Record Company – a name fans of Rilo Kiley would recognize as being owned by Pierre de Reeder. Pappas shows off a bit with deliciously dulcet voice and understated piano throughout, evoking comparisons of Jacks Mannequin (Andrew McMahon’s erstwhile side project), Stars, or the aforementioned Rilo Kiley. (Kelly, you know who you are and I’m pretty sure you’d enjoy this). The production value is through the roof and well worthy of a listen. There’s a cool little effect that I don’t have a name for (but surely exists) that happens with the piano you should listen for too![...]

elle belle – “Failed Dreamz”

Los Angeles based psych-pop act, elle belle, released the video for “Failed Dreamz”  this morning and without a doubt it’s one of the strongest songs we’ve checked out this year. The song “Failed Dreamz” is off belle’s forthcoming album Baptistina I & II, due out this fall. There are a couple of similarities between Ariel PInk and “Failed Dreamz,” both with the gothy upbeat pop delivery and the “what the fuck am I watching?” vibes. If you are pressed for time let me try to explain this to you. A man that can best be described as a Kiss cosplayer in coveralls wakes up in the wilderness and pukes up sludge. A shouting man in a hat picks him up and flips him off a lot. Hat man brings Kiss guy to a warehouse where a pretty woman shouts into the his mouth and licks his teeth then makes him choke her. Eventually hat guy[...]
