Tonight: Ami Dang and Slag Ralden

Over the past couple of years, the Ami Dang has garnered acclaim for her own brand of sitar electronic, her seamless ability to blend exotic melodies with puncturing beats, on her facebook page, she fittingly characterizes the project as “music from everywhere and nowhere.” Slag Ralden, in similar vein, creates brooding and captivating textures and melodies that bare semblance to elements of pop music. Together they have embarked on a Northeast US and Canadian tour in collaboration of each other’s material and tonight presents itself as an opportunity to catch one of their first stops at our very own Sugar City (recently relocated to 1239 Niagara Street). If this hasn’t captured your attention, set to open are Buffalo gems Pam Swartz, Copy Manager, and Little Cake & Jack Topht. Doors open at 7pm. We’ll see ya there.

Tonight: Beekeepers

Carnival Night by Shaken Stylus means that there will be balloons, silly string, kazoos and beach balls at an undisclosed location tonight. It means late evening fire hooping by Kayla Hoop. It also means four fine musicals, Beekeepers (Detroit) and Skirts (Rochester), along with locals Copy Manager and False Paul. It’s been a chilly, gray, rainy and dreary week, so a carnival sounds pretty alright to me. Beekeepers is a great fit for the theme, too. Their music is sometimes boppy, sometimes jazzy, sometimes dark and usually fun in the eccentric and unsettling way that a carnival can be. Skirts, meanwhile, are a bunch of blurs, blending the lo-fi vocal hooks of the Marked Men with surf rock, the Cure and the ever-present influence of the 90s. These songs will be fun to stomp around to, but produced differently, could have also showed up at a killer prom scene in[...]

Tonight: Wonk Sesh feat. Lord Nathaniel

The latest Wonk Sesh taping will take place tonight over at 362 Baynes. Shot and edited by Lesionread, this co-presented series aims to capture some (usually) electronic, left-of-the-dial touring acts stopping in Buffalo. Tonight’s taping will be headlined by Boston experimental musician Lord Nathaniel. Local electronic acts Barf and Wonk Sesh alumni Copy Manager will also be performing this evening. Music/filming begins tonight at 8pm. Bring $3 to cover the touring act. Check out Lord Nathaniel below before heading down, and check out Copy Manager’s Wonk Sesh as well.

Tonight: Couples Counseling

Cap off another busy weekend here in Buffalo with a trip down to the Heights as Boston’s Couples Counseling makes a stop at the Northrup House. CC, aka Virginia de las Pozas, sounds like Emily Haines (Metric, Broken Social Scene) or Amy Millan (Stars, Broken Social Scene) locking themselves in their bedrooms with only their MacBook and journal as dreamy, looped vocals mixed with blippy nostalgia make up de las Pozas’ debut cassette. Joining Couples Counseling this evening will be fellow Mass electro=pop artist PARI∀H, along with blog fav Copy Manager. Music kicks off around 8pm. As with all house shows, ask around for the address. Shouldn’t be too difficult. Make sure to have $5 on you too to cover the touring acts.
