Buddy Junior – “2 CENTS”

“2 CENTS” is the latest single from Rust, courtesy of San Francisco’s Buddy Junior. At the heart of “2 CENTS” is a brooding dirge-like cacophony of sound, bringing some shoegaze-y Toner and Swirlies vibes (while inexplicably channeling a bit of Coheed and Cambria) vibes. Sprinkled throughout are delightful (albeit soul-crushing) harmonies adding a fun bite to lyrics, which from what I could tell, detail a not-so-amicable breakup: “If I had dollar for every good thing you said to me/I’d have no money because your talk is cheap.” The juxtaposition between cheekily delivered lyrics and brooding melodies keeps this track interesting all the way through – you’ll probably want to go sit in a dark room afterwards while you remember someone not-so-fondly. While it’s been a couple years since we last checked in with Buddy Junior, we enjoyed their previous efforts in ’21 and ’20 (you can find them here). In[...]

Buddy Junior – “stars****”

Last time we checked in with Buddy Junior, we were raving about the genre-bending art-rock of previous single, “Feel Good.” We’re equally transfixed by latest single, “stars***” – with the same gloom-pop/moody-rock approach as “Feel Good” (yet somehow completely and totally different), “stars****” plays with a dark and mysterious 80s post-punk feel. It’s soaked in reverb and full of dueling vocals; a truly dark and unique must-listen that’s best experienced for yourself. “stars****” is out now via Cherub Dream records. You can also find “stars****” on Bandcamp (below), Apple Music, and Spotify. stars**** by Buddy Junior

Buddy Junior – “Feel Good”

Loving this genre-bending jam from San Francisco-based act Buddy Junior, the recording project of Jared LeNar (with a bit of help from ex-spouse Harvey Forgets). “Feel Good” caught our ears immediately for it’s intangible genre play; a swirling torrent of moody art-rock tinged with acoustic guitars and phasing noise. With it’s varied influences and dark sound, this one could appeal to anyone from Tigers Jaw, to Animal Collective, to Smashing Pumpkins. If you like it as much as we do, Buddy Junior’s latest LP (which includes “Feel Good),” PORTAL, is on Spotify too – make sure to check out the whole album there. PORTAL by Buddy Junior
