spill tab – “PISTOLWHIP”

Last time we checked in with LA-based act spill tab, we were pretty jazzed on their single “name.” We just couldn’t stay away… This time, we’ve fallen for “PISTOLWHIP” – a quiet/loud amalgamation of electronica beats, synth splashes, and a noise-rock influenced chorus.  Just like “name,” this one comes and goes before you know it at just over two (2) minutes in length, but we think the brevity suits the song, have a listen for yourself. Make sure to watch the dirt bike antics of the “PISTOLWHIP” music video below, but after that, swing by Spotify and add this one to your playlist.

Kidä – “The Garden”

The very-worldly Kidä is an Italian-Egyptian born in New York and based in London – we’ve been loving her latest jam, “The Garden.” Featuring a monochrome video (that reminds us a lot of 90s aesthetic (in a good way)), “Garden” is made-for-the-dancefloor indietronica at its finest. Kidä’s voice is fantastic and lays overtop the dark, driving beat perfectly. With a resume that also includes original compositions for the fashion world, she’s a fiercely independent multi-genre artist that’s absolutely worth checking out. Check out the video for “The Garden” below – you can also find her music on Spotify.

Evalyn – “Sun In Your Eyes”

Evalyn here with the ethereal indie pop of “Sun In Your Eyes.” Based in Topanga Canyon, CA, Evalyn has been crafting effortlessly delicate electronic-tinged pop like her debut EP, Sandcastle and Salvation, which has to-date racked up over 19 million streams. We think “Eyes” continues that trend of very listenable indie-pop – it’s got a subtle-but-driving beat, airy vocals, and just enough pop sentiment to get you hooked. Check out the video below – you can also find Evalyn on Spotify.

PACKS – “Silvertongue”

Toronto’s PACKS blasted their way into our inbox with the raucous garage rock fervor of “Silvertongue.” Boasting a true DIY tone and jangly indie rock guitars, “Silvertongue” sounds like the middle child of Bully, Hole, and Courtney Barnett. There’s a slacker rock ethos here that shines through, brilliantly emphasized by the wanderlust vibes of the accompanying music video – check it out below. You can find “Silvertongue” on Spotify, Bandcamp, and Apple Music. Take The Cake (which houses “Silvertongue) will be available in full on May 21, 2021.

Adult Books – “Grecian Urn”

LA-based trio Adult Books are here with the synth-tinged post-punk of “Grecian Urn.” Bringing to mind a subtle Ceremony or a darker, gauzier indie-r Interpol, “Urn” pairs sparkling guitar work with splashes of synth and a driving bass backbone. If you like what you hear, “Grecian Urn” is the title-track of an LP that comes out on March 26, 2021. Check it out on Bandcamp.

Nisa – “Turn Me Down”

Nisa here with a stunning animated video for “Turn Me Down.” This NYC-based indie rocker pairs psychedelic visuals with her guitar-driven indie rocker… It’s full of contemporary 2021 energy topped off by Nisa’s ethereal vocal presence. This one must be seen to be truly appreciated – check out the YouTube video below and if you really like it, swing by Bandcamp to pick it up there.

Annie DiRusso – “Nine Months”

Loving this crunchy-but-beautiful jam from Nashville/NYC-based indie rocker Annie DiRusso. “Nine Months” finds DiRusso bearing her heart on her sleeve with a batch of powerful and cathartic lyrics, flexing her powerful-but-relatable vocals overtop 90s-flavored indie rock guitars. Fans of Soccer Mommy, Diet Cig, and Phoebe Bridgers are gonna dig this one a lot – check it out below or add it to your Spotify playlist.

Colour Tongues – “Wasted”

Colour Tongues here with the colorful indie-pop of “Wasted.” Inspired to take up the art of songwriting by Transatlanticism by Death Cab for Cutie, “Wasted” embodies a bunch of mid-aughts era songwriting. Sensitive vibes, swimmy reverb-drenched guitars, and heartfelt vocals with a Gibbard-esque drawl. That’s not to say Colour Tongues is a DCFC clone – there’s a very pleasant swung beat here and a sparkly, contemporary mix that’s all their own. We think you’ll like this one too – check it out below or on Spotify if that’s more your thing. Colour Tongues · Wasted

CITYGIRL – “Sharp Distance”

We can’t resist this synth-y indie rocker from NYC-based CITYGIRL. Fronted by moody dynamo Marisa Ferdenzi, “Sharp Distance” showcases elements of retro pop, shoegaze, indie rock and post-punk. Frantic drums lay underneath Ferdenzi’s hush-hush delivery as she sings about wasted nights and empty promises. This one’s perfect for a late night drive – check it out below. It’s also on Spotify if you prefer streaming there. CITYGIRL · Sharp Distance

The Wash – “Cat”

LA band The Wash caught us off guard with the surprising vulnerability of their latest song, “Cat.” Part of a larger, 11-song LP, “Cat” finds the band plodding forth on a Radiohead-esque riff while they experiment with unique drum sounds and softly-sung vocals. The result is somber and introspective while still retaining a strong sense of melody and individuality. This is low-key bedroom-indie at it’s finest – check out “Cat” below or swing by Bandcamp to check out the entire self-titled LP. The Wash · Cat

teeballpaul – “Full House”

Solo-act teeballpaul (aka Paul Gordon) nailed it on this funky, 80s-tinged banger. “Full House” takes on the retro campiness of the 80s and pairs it with modern-day nu-disco sensibility. A huge bassline presence and snappy, electronic drums propel this one forward, pairing nicely with Paul‘s pleasant tenor. It’s campy, it’s fun, and it’s sure to get your head nodding along. Check it out below – it’s also on Spotify. teeballpaul · Full House

The Hamiltones Release New Surf-Punk Concept LP, ‘Dracula Invitational, 1791’

The Hamiltones have been kicking around Buffalo for years now, crafting epic, spindly surf-punk that brings to mind The Ventures, The Cramps and Dick Dale. They’re also fiercely individualistic – this time around, they’ve crafted an utterly unique batch of songs, 14 to be exact, self-described as “the score of the most ridiculous, b-movie Dracula film no one has ever seen (and may not even really exist).” Welcome to Dracula Invitational, 1791, a next-level concept album that tells the story about how the Hamiltones were invited to be the house band at the most infamous Dracula party in the world. The whole plot is spelled out in a wax-sealed letter that’s included with every record. The Hamiltones went all out for this, including a huge centerfold illustration depicting the Dracula party drawn by Buffalo-based illustrator Mickey Harmon. Songs like “No, Let’s Eat the Musicians” (which is accompanied by a music video[...]

The Black Black – “Satisfaction”

Here’s a dope one from Brooklyn-based punk act The Black Black. Bringing to mind the frantic dancefloor energy of Death From Above 1979 or even The Rapture, “Satisfaction” immediately makes us want to move. The vocals and guitar are excellent here, but the electric rhythm section has a chance to truly shine through. Pairing a prominent bass presence with very dance-able drum flavor was a fantastic move on TBB’s end. “Satisfaction” is also on Spotify – check it out there too.

Zilched – “The Knife”

Zilched (aka singer/songwriter Chloë Drallos) has been creating swirly noise-pop since the project was founded in 2017. “The Knife” is yet another stellar addition to her already impressive catalogue – filled with swimmy guitars, dizzying energy from the rhythm section, and dreamy, slacker-esque vocals, “Knife” embodies the anxious and dark energy of her home base, Detroit… Us Buffalonians can relate to that notorious hometown ethos. “The Knife” also has a DIY music video, featured below. You can also find Zilched’s entire discography on Spotify.

SOLD – “A New Wind”

Nothing like some menacing post-punk energy to get your blood pumping – loving the aggressively gloomy vibes on SOLD‘s new track, “A New Wind.” Spindly, reverb-laden guitar tracks twirl overtop overdriven bass bombast. The result is something gothy but also full of energy – Interpol, The Editors, and Ceremony would be proud. Check it out via YouTube below – you can also find “A New Wind” on Spotify.
