Maffmatix and Charlton Banks – “Dead”

Sometimes I’ll try to get all “what is the meaning of life” and realize I’m being an airhead. The more grounded subject is death, and two rising emcees in Maffmatix and Charlton Banks have more more incisive thoughts than I have spinning upstairs.

Thematically, “Dead” is what it should be. Maffmatix kicks off the track with a verse that contemplates what his life would mean when death comes knocking. Regrets, achievements, opportunities won and lost. Maffmatix goes for an internalized eulogy to explore and appreciate the definitive finality of death. On verse 2, Charlton Banks takes death to a slightly different door. His verse sees him return to the streets; it’s where death is imminent rather than inevitable, and Charlton even mentions having an indifference to it. Staccato strings pace the track and other orchestral and woodwind instruments come and go. Great scratching and timely, appropriate vocal samples also come to the surface throughout the track. It’s a full experience of sounds and feelings that you’ll appreciate if you’re into some extra big production in your hip hop.
