Awake & Dreaming – “Underwater”

Like so many bands piquing our interest in the inbox these days, Waterloo, Ontario’s Awake & Dreaming came together during the weird, isolated blur of the COVID era. But their latest single feels less like home isolation and more like a late-night reckoning.

That track, “Underwater,” is the latest cut off the quartet’s debut record Inevitable (dropping October 16th). It hinges on a delicate, swelling piano line written by vocalist/keyboardist Sasha Kristoff during a heavy night she couldn’t shake off. In her words, she felt like she was drowning – calling out into the void like a whale looking for its pod and getting nothing back. It’s built specifically for that 2 a.m. moment when the noise dies down and you’re left alone with everything you’ve said and heard.

Together with Stefan Schneider (guitar), Phil Lee (bass), and Ryan Dugal (drums), the four-piece melds dream-pop with slick 90s alt-radio earworms, bringing in heavyweight Canadian producers Jay Dufour (mix) and João Carvalho (master) to give the swelling classical-meets-arena arrangement room to breathe. Fans of The Dresden Dolls, Eisley, or Straylight Run will find a lot to love here.

Grab an early listen to Inevitable over on Bandcamp and give Awake & Dreaming a follow on Instagram. The band is playing all over Canada and Buffalo is basically Canada so maybe we will be seeing them on a flyer at SPoT Coffee sometime in 2027.
